Wow Fanatec did a real good job with that wheel quality at that price range. Superb rim right there! Definitely going to get one! Thanks for the great review!
Just like me when I was a kid, had to take everything apart to know how it works, even before I start playing with it! very entertaining sir thank you!
Just came across this video when researching this rim. Thanks you Barry, you helped me make my choice to buy this. You really do have the best reviews on all of TH-cam!
Great review as always...a note about the bite point: The reason the bite point setting wasn't showing up is because you have to pull one clutch in as the main clutch first and then pull the bite point clutch in second (they say that in the manual and the video tutorials I believe). Whenever you pulled both clutch paddles at the same time was when the error occurred; it's designed this way it seems. Great wheel overall, I own one and it feels really great for modern open wheelers and GT3/GTE cars.
One nice thing about Fanatec's new system of putting the cheap QR on the wheel is that they sell the wheels for cheaper because they save a lot on making the wheel by not having to put the more expensive aluminum one on. Which for those of us that only buy their wheel to convert them for DD wheels, it just saves us more money for something we just through in the parts bin.
David Wall Yes, but for many of us we run direct drive wheels using the stock Clubsport quick release mechanism (the better aluminum one, not this plastic one). A lot of people are buying their dd setups from sim racing bay and getting the Fanatec base side quick release adapter with them. This allows you to mount any Fanatec wheel right to the motor without and modification of the rim. It is awesome to have, but when I tried to run my CSLE Xbox rim just to see how it held up I could definitely feel flexing even at only 50% power on the dd system. Plus most of the quick release conversion kits available that allow to use an aftermarket quick release on a Fanatec rim aren't designed to fit this rim with the flat surfaces on the top and bottom of the qr mounting location. I know this is very easy to solve, but I still feel like it would be much better if Fanatec used the better quick release instead of that plastic thing. We also don't know if they kept the same PCD for the mounting holes, again though this is something easy to resolve even if it is different, only a bit harder to find a solution to than the out of round surface. Also, I thought I read somewhere before launch that this rim would be available woth both qr styles. Is this true?
$170?!?! Here in Germany it is the equivalent of $317 regular price. Although there is like a $60 discount on it right now. The adapter, funnily enough, is the same number in Eur as in USD, so just marginally more expensive. For a German company they charge their fellow countrymen quite a lot - or it's got to do with some sort of tax on electronics, considering the adapter is pretty much the same. Awesome review, Barry! I LOVE that you actually open up most stuff you review, that's such an interesting and important insight into build quality and potential flaws or weak points that you just don't get in other reviews. The other day I watched a review where the reviewer honestly said that in order to run the CSL wheelbase he would need to BUY an entire new rig because one bolt didn't fit, the base wobbled and he didn't know how to fix it because there was something in the way slightly. That just made me angry inside in a weird way, as if witnessing capitalism completely assimilating a person(s confidence). Thank you for not being like that, being so down to earth and providing that huge amount of information and competent opinions.
@@Bassalicious Ordered to be delivered in France from website. No quick release but the plastic stuff. Down shift start to have issues (2 years of intensive use in Codemaster f1). I think that compared to other wheels, it is a very good wheel (quality/price). The screen is working only for the bite point clutch on XBOX Codemaster f1. Down shift issue started when I switched from f1 2018 to f1 2020. So maybe it is linked to the game. Despite the small issue, I still use it. A nice wheel at a fair price until we get to the quick release. Even with the quick (profit) release, it may be a good choice if you're only needing one wheel. Great review Barry!
Another Ace review Barry! I'm hoping you do decide to do the conversion. - Whilst I don't plan to snap up one of these wheels myself, I'd find the process fascinating and your definitely the one we'd like to see go through the exercise! And whilst we're on the subject of GT3 wheels, any plans to check out Turn Racing's 488 wheel? The recent down to earth product reviews are great but I'd love to see you back into the super high end and that wheel looks stunning!
Hey Barry, did you get in on the latest batch of converters from Sim Racing Machines? I went ahead and took the dive. Only problem is the wheel is still on backorder!! Will be mounted to my DD ASAP.
I bet you could stipple the grips on the wheel if you don't mind taking a soldering iron to it. Just make a million tiny little touches to the rubber grips to give it some texture.
Great video as always Barry, the master of simracing👍 btw that plastic look so fragile mhh.. Seems like it will not last long, don't know maybe is jus a feeling🤔
For an inexpensive wheel, I was impressed when using it in VR while in RRRE driving the DTM cars. I like the position of my hands on this wheel, it was comfortable and the upgraded quick release (got it for no charge because the wheel was delayed for those that pre order)makes a significant difference, but I was using the V2 base. I would like to see an upgraded version with metal base, carbon fiber front plate, magnetic shifters and better grips for the DD Podium Series. That would be Bitch'n! -BTW Berry, thank you for always voiding your warranty so I don't have too by taking things apart; way too take one for the team!!!😆KEEP CRUSHING IT MY FRIEND DOING AWESOME.
I've got this on an OSW small mige. Feels good, except my clutch paddles drop out and DON'T come back like Barry's did. Trying to sort through a few things before pushing Fanatec for a replacement. Everything else works as intended.
I've been following your P1 build on Race Department, thanks for sharing that! I'm currently waiting on a GT1 order with a custom designed seat mount for my motion chair. It helped me to see your build while deciding which route to go for my chassis. Cheers!
I was getting bad flex on the CSL Elite, just like in the video until I took the plunge and tightened the bolt more than I thought I should. Now I get barely any flex at all, it's so much tighter and makes no creaking noises. Your bolt appears to be sticking out too much but it's hard to see for sure from the video? Excellent video as always, very informative thank you.
I really like this wheel im trying to decide between this and the formula black with the addition of the quick release this comes in 100aud more expensive. On the plus side its slightly larger diametre and it is console compatable if i ever get the chance to upgrade to direct drive system so resale could be easier. On the downside no included quick release and no rev lights like the formula black. Very hard decision any thaughts. Thanks for all your efforts in producing such quality videos.
Well for rev lights you have the options 1. changing gear by ears (ideally) 2. rev indicator in game ui 3. external hardware rev lights. The lack of quick release is only relevant if you have > 1 wheel and change them by day. You can only upgrade then to the Fanatec DD, to OSW etc only with a USB conversion that's an extra 170 AUD. The formula rim has also small motors in the grips, which indicate abs and lock ups - the McLaren rim does not have these, a further con.
addictedtopiano thanks for your reply, yes i will have this wheel plus the hub with my sparco wheel so i guess ill run whuch ever is appropriate for the car at the time. I do like both and i did miss the vibe motors. I can only afford 1 formula rim and still on the fence money aside do you preffer one over another. I also have plenty of shift indicators both in game and on my tablet so it no real issue and i agree with using your ears as the best method. Thanks for replying mate and yes i don't really have any issues with converting but really by the time i go to direct drive id probably have a serious crack at building my own or even converting a real wheel and just flog this off with the base. I do aort of like the idea that its xbox compatable even though i dont have or want an xbox it would be a nice set up for a console rig which may help sell it later on.
Mind is made up now this looks great but the formula black is made from aluminium whilst this is plastic that is the thing that swayed me the black is much older but quality wise i think it edges out this purely on materials like ali body and alcantara grips.
Mark Newcombe Your hand position is different between the formula rim and the GT3 rim. Formula rim, your hands are lower so I like that when racing open wheel, the GT3 rim. your hands will be higher up by approximately 10-15mm, so with this rim I like DTM, GT3, especially while in VR. It really comes down to the discipline of motorsport you most often race. The formula is a better built wheel imo, but I'm having fun with the McLaren wheel even though it not as robust.
T1MERUNN3R 414 thanks very much mate i appreciate your comments. Does the formula rim feel significantly smaller i see its 3cm does it make much of a difference? Im setting up my whole system so im thinking a formula black for open wheel stuff and the hub with my sparco which looks like the fanatec forza but i can easily get more real rims for the hub and have the chance to touch and feel first which i believe is the advantage of the hub. Again thanks for your reply i seem to be forking out so much $$ on this thing when you take the pc rig accessories into account i have saved a few bucks where i could because i have a lot of tools and welders etc here so that helped out and i also made a pretty nuce seq shifter, hyd handbrake, my own version of butt kickers built the pc and just tossing up on wether i should build my own pedals i think i could build some pretty solid loadcell pedals with halls and prgressive clutch just need to find a friendly pommy who can box a bunch of uk stuff up and send it as one. Shipping to rural australia gets pricey just waiting till the 30th of june to see if anything concrete comes out from fanatec with the podium gear and nvidea with a new card if nothing solid itll be clubsport and 1080ti but its getting close now and im not enjoying the wait.
Thanks for another good review Barry. I thought you mentioned having the AF V2 in house for testing. Did you have a chance to compare that to the Sim Racing Bay OSW? Enjoy your reviews. Thanks Barry.
Always great to see your movies … just if you race on your xbox one the window on the wheel was not working like on pc. is this normal or does this gonna work soon ? greetings
I'd think it would be fine for DD since they probably had it in mind for their own DD base. They said they've been working on those for years, which i doubt, tbh. Seems more like they started when OSW kits were selling like hot cakes. Regardless, would have been a bad move to build it if it can't be used on teh podiumseries

I'm ready for Podium, bring it on! btw, when those rim-pins are exposed they would bend/break very easily. So you don't want to drop rim or smash backside to the table surface etc. Edit, where you could get those plastic "cap-remover" tools?

You know how on an ordinary Xbox One controller you need to use the right analog stick to scroll down to the bottom of a text box in Forza or whatever? How do you do that with this wheel? It only has one analog stick, on the left side of the wheel. What am I missing here? 🤨
While he shows us the quick release mount you can see a button pressed down by the plastic quick release so the Fanatec driver knows you run the plastic one and therefore limits the torque!
Is the quick release mount really sold for 100 dollars? Like i looked at their site and couldnt find it but then i looked on this wheels page and it said it was included with the wheel and all their wheels will come with one... So then they must have changed their plans from when u made this video untll now?
Hi . Thanks for reply. I know the sell them as an extra. Was asking if an original QR would fit with modifications as have 3 other clubsport rims already I can pinch 1 off.
I think there is a straight edge on the one they sell for the McLaren rim whereas there is no straight edge on the Formula / BMW rim. I have all of them and from a close glance it seems it may not work. But I have not physically tried so I can't say for absolute certain.
Yeah, have a few rims too. Bolt pattern maybe the same but doubt it, will check when my gt3 rim arrives soon. May order the QR when I order the DD motor.
Make sure the connection wire for the potentiometer is connected correctly. I had a throttle pedal that was playing up and after inspection I tightened the allen bolts that clamp the wire to the pedal and the issue went away. I run bass shakers and it must have worked it's way loose after a while.
Yes mate. They put up the price once they released the CSL Elite base for Playstation. There are also a LOT of problems with these rims that Fanatec can't seem to fix. Like double shifting or not shifting at all. I have multiple emails from them with some telling me it's a firmware issue and others telling me it's a hardware issue. They can't make up their minds. It's a brilliant rim WHEN it works. I just hope (unlike me) you don't get a shit one if you order it.
This wheel has some serious design flaws. The quick release is plastic and leaves the wheel knocking and wobbling constantly. Check the Fanatec forums, its full of complaints about the terrible knocking of this wheel. Be aware before buying.
I know you want to give as much information as you can but spending 40 seconds feeling the shifters for burs & rough edges just adds time we can’t get back Be more concise & maybe think about writing a script so you don’t waffle on for ever
What you should have emphasized more is the lower analog paddles that can be used for break & gas. This means they could give gradual gas & break inputs. A huge bonus to anyone who doesn’t have full use of their legs.

raikkusaatana The plastic prybar Barry used was just a simple trim tool, you can get them in most automotive or hardware shops.
Can you use the dual clutch on F1? I don’t feel like paying extra for the podium clutch add on for the Formula one V2 rim...
Yes you can use the dual clutch on f1 games (used it in Codemaster f1 2018 and f1 2020)
@@souleymaneba9272 Thanks, now I just have to find the wheel. I don't know why they discontinued it seems like a great wheel for the fraction of the cost of the other f1 wheels on the market
@@BigRatchet710
Down shifting start to have issues (2 years of intensive use in Codemaster f1).
The buttons cover that you add breaks easily but you can change them and you can also remove them completly ( it feels good without).
I like the size of the wheel (bigger than Fanatec f1 wheel).
Very happy about this wheel.
Where can I buy one??
Can this wheel and motor work with g29 pedals and ps4 ? Thanks
Hi, those of you using the CSL McLaren wheel with the DD accuforce or any other DD wheels, any issue with the plastic backend?
You know how on an ordinary Xbox One controller you need to use the right analog stick to scroll down to the bottom of a text box in Forza or whatever? How do you do that with this wheel? It only has one analog stick, on the left side of the wheel. What am I missing here? 🤨
just bind scrolling text to the single analog? it's probably like that by default anyways
S2000!
I knew you had good taste in cars!
How are these little displays exactly called?
how can I connect this to my T300RS base I tried putting it in for past few days but it won’t connect it falls off & no buttons work 🤔
t300 is thrustmaster. This is fanatec. They're not made to be compatible
will you test the new Fanatec Formula v2? :)
Yes, in the upcoming weeks I think.
Can you change the buttons to ps4 buttons?
Any update on DD conversion for this?
That will be my next review.
I'm pretty sure it will break if you use it with a direct drive wheel.
Seems likely unless you are careful. I managed to break the plastic connector on my CSL Elite PS4 rim by being a hamfisted idiot lol.
I was happy to order this wheel for only $200 shipped... but it looks like it's really going to cost $300 because the plastic quick release sucks!
While he shows us the quick release mount you can see a button pressed down by the plastic quick release so the Fanatec driver knows you run the plastic one and therefore limits the torque!
How these tiny displays are called?
Too bad about the plastic clamp, hard to find a Macca rim with metal QR nowadays.
I want to buy but I'm a little hesitant
Usefull on my X with my v2.5???
Is the quick release mount really sold for 100 dollars? Like i looked at their site and couldnt find it but then i looked on this wheels page and it said it was included with the wheel and all their wheels will come with one... So then they must have changed their plans from when u made this video untll now?
It's still listed on the US website: www.fanatec.com/us-en/steering-wheel-accessories/clubsport-quick-release-adapter-black-usa.html
@@simracinggarage3026on the european site it isnt xD
Also. Would the QR from a clubsport formula rim fit the Gt3 rim with slight modification?
Hey Barry i have fanatec v3 pedals i took them apart to lube them up and put them back to gather and now the clutch pedals doesnt work any thoughts
Make sure the connection wire for the potentiometer is connected correctly. I had a throttle pedal that was playing up and after inspection I tightened the allen bolts that clamp the wire to the pedal and the issue went away. I run bass shakers and it must have worked it's way loose after a while.
Hello - can you use it on csl elite for ps4? :-)
Yes.
I thought it was ironic that an actual bug crawled across the floor, while he was showing the clutch software bug.
Wait I need to buy a quick release for my v2? ffs
magzire : No you don't. It's an option.
oh thanks, will get one for ACC
It now comes with the adapter for €230
Lol...This is funny for me to read, since one year later, I just bought this rim, used, for 280 euros. Crazy times!
Barry do you still have this wheel? I’d like to buy it from you. Thanks
A bit expensive with a $100 for the optional CS quick release..
My csl elite feels horrible with GT sport
Wheel is no longer available.
Dude... get a radio station
170$??? it is 250$ now....
The clubsport quick release is included in the current price.
Does not coincide with the original)
This wheel has some serious design flaws. The quick release is plastic and leaves the wheel knocking and wobbling constantly. Check the Fanatec forums, its full of complaints about the terrible knocking of this wheel. Be aware before buying.
I know you want to give as much information as you can but spending 40 seconds feeling the shifters for burs & rough edges just adds time we can’t get back
Be more concise & maybe think about writing a script so you don’t waffle on for ever
