- Bathing elephants enjoying the waterhole, a lion pride is calling in the morning, a hippo family with baby returning to the water, a big herd of cape buffalo ramble through the plains and the first roan antelopes return to the park. Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe offers a huge variety of fascinating wildlife encounters and plentiful birdlife to observe.
One evening we came across an African wildcat when all of a sudden a black-backed jackal came along the way. We could not have predicted the outcome of this close encounter of these two small predators.
Welcome to our birding and wildlife safari to Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe in August 2021. We stayed three nights at the beautiful Camp Hwange and would like to thank the excellent staff and our amazing guide for this unforgettable safari.
For animal identification, please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.
With best regards,
Sandra and Markus

Great footage and video - amazing interaction between wild cat and jackal. Can yo tone down the music volume so that we can hear the bird sounds and the lioness roar / calling. Hwange is amazing and underestimated by many make game viewing a pleasure without traffic jams.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you like the scene with the wild cat and the jackal, the outcome was totally unexpected. Yes, Hwange is a fantastic park and we were so lucky with our sightings there. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus

Your sighting of the African wildcat and black back jackal was an amazing sighting! And the honey badger! Good for you - and thank you for sharing your video. I’ve been to Hwange twice - love it very much. The Africa bush is magical. 🦁
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad to hear that you enjoyed watching the video. You can imagine that we holded our breath not knowing what is going to happen between the wild cat and the jackal. What an unexpected outcome! And for the honey badgers, that was the first time we ever encountered those. Very lucky indeed. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
So cool! Great spottings of wildcat and two honey badgers, wow!
Dear Mike, thanky you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! So glad you enjoyed watching our videos. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
No sable antelopes? I thought Hwange was one of their strongholds. Anyway, lovely video!
Yes, there were Sable in the area but somehow we managed to missed them, but we got the Roans instead. Sometimes you cannot wish for what you will get. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
@@SandraMarkusTrachsel sable never seem to stick around for long in one area. At waterholes they would drink and then quickly again disappear into the bushes! Thanks :)
That's exactly what happened, we were always one step behind them.
Does it get any better than this? Many thanks!

Once again a magnificent video, it really cheers up my boring commuting !
Superb ellies interaction, melts the heart ❤ What is it that upset them so much that they rushed off trumpeting ?
And the wild cat and jackal scene ❤ Gosh, as a cat lover I held my breath for her !
Brilliant birds as always 😊
Thank you so much for sharing 🙏
Dear Celine, thank you so much for your wunderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad to hear that you enjoy watching our videos. Regarding the elephants in the pool: the wind changed direction and all of a sudden they could smell us and runned away. Regarding the wildcat and jackal, who would have guessed the outcome of that encounter, it was big surprise to all of us that the cat stood its ground! Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus

Thank you for another amazing video! It was a treat to watch! Really wish we could go to Hwange sometime!
Thanks for sharing your sightings in the meantime!
Nice footage of elephants!
Loved Roan antelope too!
And those birds towards the end of the video, with so many owls was great!
First time seeing a wild cat footage!
Sad to see the hyenas feasting on the elephant, but that's nature taking its course.
Thanks for sharing your amazing safari experiences! A treat to watch, everytime!
Thank you!

You need to stop spoiling us! That was thoughtfully presented replete with so much info….actually very educational
Hwange is probably our next destination after just getting back from Sabi Sands in the Greater Kruger
Interestingly minimal Giraffe sightings. Any Wild dogs or Sables seen??
Thanks again for the passion shown
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment, appreciate it very much! So glad to hear that you value our effort in making these videos, thank you very much. Regarding giraffes, we saw a couple of them at the main gate when entering the park but only very few around Camp Hwange. Sables were reported around Camp Hwange but we could not find them during our stay, also cheetah tracks were found but no luck with trakking them. No, we have not heard of any wild dogs sightings during our stay. We had plenty of wild dogs during our stay in Mana Pools, if you are interested please have a look here: th-cam.com/video/fnt5IptAfFM/w-d-xo.html Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Nice work !
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! Best regards, Markus
Wow. I didn't know Zim had wild cats. Great video. What is the name of the animal which looks like a mini kangaroo which you shot at night.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! So glad that enjoy watching our videos. Yes, that encounter between the jackal and the wildcat was absolutely astonishing. We were so worried about the cat and it got the upper hand in the end. The animal you are looking for is a Springhare, please note that you find all animal species names in the subtitles in all our videos (or in the video description). Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
Wunderschöne Aufnahmen, super geschnitten - Aber leider etwas leblos aufgrund durchgehend fehlendem Originaltons! Vielleicht geht da noch was? LG
Amazing ! What month was it ?
Dear Benjamin, thank you very much for your kind comment, apprecitate it very much. This was beginning of August 2021. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus
