Soviet Chain Mortiser [Restoration] (Part 2 of 2)

- This tool restoration was on a Soviet / USSR chain mortiser. I think it was made in 1973 by Electricgalvanic and has the model number IE-5601A. I do not know much else about this tool as most websites (which are in Russian) do not go into much detail. I believe the chain came in three different widths, and I have the 3/4" one. The restoration itself was pretty straight forward as only a few pieces were missing. I decided to paint the tool as some of the photos of this tool online show it painted and the person I was restoring this for asked for it.
In this first part, I disassemble, clean, and paint the chain mortiser. In part two I reassemble, make new parts, and get it running. This thing is a beast!

Small detail here on soldering. For a wire like this you apply a bit of flux to the wire (if you don't have flux core solder). Then you put a *tiny* amount on your iron to help transfer the heat. Then you apply the iron to the wire and after the *wire*is hot enough you apply the solder to the wire and melt the solder into the wire.

My friend, I admire your work and your videos: Clean, nice shots, no silly music, and no dull time, as you accelerate the speed of them, this one in particular is fantastic. One constructive comment I can add to is about the soldering when you were making the cable longer. Next time, try to heat the wires with the tip of the iron (with only a tiny bit of solder in it), and then pour solder into the wires, it will work like a charm as the resin or flux will make your life much easier ;) Keep up the great work!
Took the words right out of my mouth. That solder joint is cold, unfortunately. Hopefully, the shrink tubing will help hold it, but if it were me I'd redo it.

It's A LOT quieter than the modern Makita ones we use for timber frame construction! Not quite so precise, but then it's old. Perhaps the primitive Soviets never discovered how to make motors noisy, like proper capitalist motors?

Such a cool tool, but I just have one suggestion. Check out some soldering videos here on YT. Those joints were 100% cold with no real wetting of the copper. You're supposed to heat the wire with the iron, then push the solder into the heated joint.
My only complaint with any of your wonderful videos!
Haha yes. I explain in another comment why the soldering was all poopy, basically the iron kept cycling on and off for no reason.
Dylan Headrick also flux helps the solder flow into the strands.

Most of my life passed in the USSR and I happened to deal with a similar tool. Nostalgia.

The style of Soviet instruments was distinguished by its roughness but high strength and reliability. And such a tool is highly appreciated, I have many such tools made more than half a century ago - everything is perfectly fine.
Not just a tool. My friend has a ZiL refrigerator which has been operating continuously since 1956. During this time, only the lock was repaired - the steel door latch was slightly worn out. And the paint turned yellow.
@@user-sl3il5sz2s it's not me that is underestimating it. there is a lot of soviet era stuff that has not stood the test of time. so much of it was repaired through the years with jury rigged parts that they don't really hold up. a lot of it was also made with what was at hand, and while durable and functional, it wasn't exactly practical.
when i say this is a good tool, i mean it's something you can still use today with little worry (except for the wiring, in this case). it also still runs extremely well with little wear.

if all these "restoration” channels would work as painting conservators they would start by picking the frame apart and sandblast it, remove the canvas, cut of all the broken bits and stripp the paint of. in the end they would “fix” it by spraying it with a bunch of metallic spray paints.
Although this channel is pretty good :)
Just imagine the sheer volume of tables and chairs you could crank out with this beast!

You can make a lot better solder joints if you use the iron as a heating element rather than an applicator. If you touch the iron to the wire then apply solder at the same time the solder flows into the joint better rather than just coating it. Cool video! Keep it up!
Эл инструмент назывался "электродолбёжник". В комплекте было 4 шины и 4 цепи от 8 мм до 20 мм. Было очень удобно 15 мм цепью за 2 прохода делать отверстия в дверях под замки.

ефим кривов да не, вполне мог. Редкая просто машинка.
просто в большинстве своем народ отверстия под замки обычным сверлом делал и потом стамеской обрабатывал.

Сильно сомневаюсь, что мог. Машинка советских времен. А в те времена даже более-менее ширпотребные электродрели серии "ИЭ" (читай, как "инструмент приличного качества", а не маломощное и ненадежное бытовое говнище серии "БЭС") в магазинах было почти нереально увидеть. Не говоря уже о профессиональном инструменте, не из группы "товаров народного потребления"...
В общем, купить-то было можно, если задаться целью. Но из-под полы, украденный со стройки или с фабрики. В розничной торговле не найти, и напрямую на завод-производитель тоже не обратишься - с физлицами советские заводы не торговали...

The way you do the things so as to save the things from damaging is nice
That soldering job. It helps a lot to pre-twist each wire, then twist them together (inline). Also, try holding the iron tip on the wire, then apply solder to the tip and wire together. If solder is applied to the iron by itself, it burns off all of the flux, which will prevent the solder from wicking into the wire. Also, you'll want to hold the iron on the wire for steady heat rather than poking it.

I am stunned by Soviet Mechanical Engineering. Most products are designed and built to be purchased once and provide nearly a lifetime of service with regular maintenance. The key design elements are just brutally simple. Case in point, look at how many Lada's are still roaming around Russia and former Soviet countries.
A hint for soldering .... put iron on one side of wire and soldering wire on the opposite side. It's much easier and joints will be solid ;)

No offence meant with this, but I wouldn't trust that solder joint for a second. You need to use the iron to heat the target you're about to solder (preferably from the bottom) and then push the solder into the heated object (from the top side) and it'll flow around and make a very good bond. when it's flown and there's enough solder, you remove the heat.
A good joint is shiny, almost like a mirror.
What you created wasn't soldered as much as mechanically tacked just enough it might have seemed to be connected but it'll break faster than you can get on to the next project.
Yes, the wetting wasn't happening because the iron kept cycling on and off for no reason, so I couldn't get the wires hot enough. I'm definitely buying a new one, haha.
Hand Tool Rescue you need to resolder that connection ASAP when you get a new iron. Otherwise it's going to catch on fire, or even worse, melt through the heat shrink tubinh and short out to the chassis, which can electrocute you.
Chassis is grounded so this is not that bad.

Таких инструментов навалом. Мне тесть рассказывал, типа чтоб их домой не тащили с производства, они были так хитро сделаны, что дома их решительно невозможно использовать. Питались они от слаботочного высокочастотного (или низкочастотного) трехфазного трансформатора. Но старый таки упер и приспособил подобный девайс на циркулярку один и на шкантоверт другой. Все трое и поныне в рабочем состоянии))).

Высокочастотное питание (3 фазы 400 Гц) в индустриальном электроинструменте (электропилы, дрели, шлифмашины и т.д.)используется с целью уменьшения массы и габаритов электродвигателя, дросселей, трансформаторов... И лишь в самую последнюю очередь - "чтобы домой не тащили".
В авиации, кстати, питание переменным током 400 Гц распространено еще больше, по тем же самым причинам.
А как в домашних условиях такую машину запустить?

Если, как в этом видео, трехфазный мотор с _линейным_ напряжением 220V (фазное 110V) - то через любой частотный преобразователь подходящей мощности. Собственно, автор данного видео именно так машинку в работе и проверял. Бонусом будут электронная защита от перегрузки, плавный запуск и возможность регулировки оборотов. Хотя и не сказать, что это "халявный" вариант - готовьте довольно-таки приличную сумму (как минимум 5-10 тысяч рублей, в зависимости от требуемой мощности) на "частотник".
С трехфазными моторами на 380V в бытовых условиях всё несколько печальнее. "Нищебродский" вариант с конденсаторной схемой - крутиться будет, конечно, но в мощности много потеряет (а в ручном электроинструменте моторы без избытка мощности конструкторами заложены, чтобы он не стал неподъемным). А "частотник" в этом случае не поможет - не существует более-менее доступных моделей, которые питаются от 1 фазы 220V, а на выходе дают 3 фазы 380V. Разве что использовать достаточно мощный повышающий трансформатор 220/380, от которого запитать "частотник" - но в этом случае не только цена решения заставит поморщиться, еще и с мобильностью инструмента проблемы будут.
Если конструкция двигателя позволяет - можно попытаться перемотать его на однофазный (с фазосдвигающим конденсатором), под питание от бытовой сети.
Есть двигатель от какого-то размыкателя. Его можно перемотать на 220?

Только кабель так крепить нельзя (5-31). Опасно. Возможно короткое замыкание. Надо за наружную изоляцию (черную).
I also think that soldering was not proper. This is "cold" soldering, that can give problems in the future. The proper way is to apply so much heat that solder liquefies and flows through whole joint by capillary force. I think that probably soldering iron was too weak or too cold for this work. вспомнил молодость.
был аккорд: ставили дверные замки в новые полотна, в пансионате одном. брали такую машинку за магарыч. только цепь смазывали парифином. все тогда перепробовали, однако самый лучший результат дал именно парафин.
вообще автору респект большой!
Лучший вариант даёт воск! Парафин суховат! Токаря тоже пользуются для резьб натуральным воском! Закупаем в пчелоконторе!
Воск/парафин еще хорошо идет для смазки подошвы рубанка ручного или пилы.

Удивил способ подачи смазки, по трубке. Никогда раньше такого не видел.
А вот термоусадочную трубку при ремонте проводки напрасно использовали, пострадала аутентичность конструкции.
Надо было как раньше, изоляционной лентой на тканевой основе.
Наверно, такого не нашлось в мастерской...
Хочу отметить, что это довольно специфический инструмент, и я далеко не уверен,что мне такой нужен в хозяйстве.

Здравствуйте! Это цепной долбёжник на 36 В. 3-х фазный.Были электрорубанок , шкантёр и что интересно, заточной станок для ножей сенокосилок.Это всё что я встречал в своей жизни. Все равно трансформатор требуется, трехфазную сеть на 220В как то не встречал.
DmitriyShum были когда-то очень давно в союзе 220/127.
Были, в прошедшем, стояли на телеках да радиолах переключатели сетевого напряжения, а на данный момент нет.
Частотника 1 фазного достаточно , + регулировка оборотов , включить в домашних условиях не проблема такую машинку , и 3 фазное 220в 50гц , применялось раньше для инструментов при работе во влажной среде и т.п. с развязкой от сети на трансформаторах типа ТСЗИ 380/220в

Some recommendation. Always clamp down a cable on the outer insulation. Pinched cables may start to leak current over time. If the cable was molded in the grommet, you could use an extra sleeve over the cables before clamping them down.
Be careful when using VFD on old motors. Older motors usually do not have the proper winding insulation to work with VFD's. This becomes worse when you apply long cables, but your cable was short so that is the best possible case. Secondly, the motor cannot cool itself as efficiently when run at slow speed but this was not the case here.
