We use putty on tubs for the most part, i have found that 100% silicone works well for plastic shower pans and some tubs if there is going to be much flex we use silicone. Basically if it is rigid enough we use putty and we always knead the putty until its warm!
Silicone 100% of the time. All the old timers use putty which is understandable but silicone is so flexible and will come off very easily for the person
Silicon is infallible as long as you have a full bead you almost can’t go wrong if you put it together (in 1 attempt, no taking apart) I have not used plumber’s putty but It seems Cost ineffective even though the difference is negligible, To me it’s like purple primer vs clear primer, I only use purple primer cause I was taught that way. If it works the way you do it and the differences are negligible, don’t differ. Keep teaching it, it’s not a problem.

Plumbers putty gets very hard over time and will often corrode the finishes on the hardware making it behave like loctite. Silicone is totally non-reactive and remains flexible. I have had to vibe out numerous puttied drains when my cam extractor didn’t work even with a 18" cheater pipe on the ratchet. Silicone just tears away, leaves no stains, and any residue scrapes right off like it was applied a few days ago. Not sure if you’re smoking your plumbers putty, but these are the facts of the matter.
Don't use RTV... GE kitchen & bath comes off when you want it to in my experience. I have been using silicone since the 90's and have never had an issue with it. I have gone back for remodels or finish changes and replacement and the trims have come off fairly easily with a little bit of cleaning with a razor blade and you are good to set the new strainer. Usually use clear GE k&b silicone. I always disliked the way putty would seep out over time post install for a while.
Use Same Putty you do Hercules Sta put is good for plastic and fiberglass . and i put rectoeseal T2 pipe dope on threads haven't had a issue either people that use silicone just don't know proper way to do a drain
Plumbers patty the only thing for the job I understand that silicone ie good for lots of things but not for the overflow on a tub you don’t used silicone for that
Those overflow gaskets are very important. The plumber did not put one on my tub and I ended up having to replace some ceiling drywall on the first floor.🤬🤬
Once is in the gap, it is sealed. Water stable right away. If you are laying a bead, you need to wait. It has worked flawlessly for us since the 90's on hundreds of jobs and comes out fairly easily on remodels decades later. Just don't use RTV!
Putty all day I don't c how the he'll someone can use cilicone and call themselves a plumber. 23 years as a plumber never used cilicone where it didn't belong

Putty also discolors fiberglass tubs, and leaky drain calls I have dealt with have also been from the putty drying out
