A Snot Fly... What?

  • What is a snot fly? Sometimes false albies will only feed on very small bait fish that look like little clear blobs with two tiny black eyes. If that is what the fish are eating, you have a very slim chance of catching on a fly much bigger than that. This snot baitfish range anywhere from a half inch to one inch long so be sure to have some clear or translucent white flies.

    I live east of Raleigh nc and 110 miles from Morehead City NC. I tie the snot fly and I will try tying with thin skin. I've used thin skin on other patterns and I curse that material every time. I have found that thin skin is easier to use when it's cold. I have a small frig in my barn and that is where I keep the thin skin. I am able to.manage using it when it's been in the frig.

      I would say 'Yes' but with only a single layer of crystal or sili skin material. This one is roughly 1.5 inches long. Thanks for the comment.

      Yes, a gummy fly, but the length is 1.5" instead of 3".
