Loved this game, one of my favourites of 2020. I love that they didn't have to put in a movement system with a ton of depth and a high skill ceiling, but they did anyway, and it just elevates the whole experience (excuse the pun!) Enjoy the game! Great music too.
The first time I played this game I got completely lost in the nook and crannies of the island. Spent an entire evening forgetting eveything about myself and just helping a little bird find hidden treasure. Unforgettable.
I love this game. I've completed basically everything there is to do and still come back sometimes just to hike and glide around the island and enjoy the ambiance.
Dan do not worry about progress. With the bucket and 1/2 the max feathers you can get from the shore to hawk peak in 2-3 landing for feather charging. There is even a shortcut from behind your house to the final bit of hawk peak trail.
To date, this has been the only game I've been able to convince my mom to play. Very chill, good game. Also, I know you probably recorded it all in one session, but: - If there is water, you can fish it (bait just makes it go faster). - Gliding around from high up is a great way to find secrets, of which there are many. - There is quite a bit of game after the finish in the form of side-quests if you want to do another episode afterward, or even just in your own time off-channel.
@@smith-kg7fg Yep. Dan(iel) Floyd plays the games, with editing from and weekly games with his wife, Carrie Floyd, and weekly visits from their friend, Dan Jones as well.
The graphics can go up. Those are the lowest. I really like the look of the pixelated game though! Reminds me of playing those random DS games I got from my parents. It’s a bummer I broke it (I dropped it on its hinge and it broke)
I know we got a great sample of it in the Psychonauts playthrough, but Dan's ability to choose voices for NPCs and then _remember which ones to use_ is pretty amazing.
This was one of my favorite games I played last year! A fantastic way to spend a lazy Sunday morning. The movement is so satisfying - I love gliding in basically any platformer it shows up in. It was a little unsettling to have everyone addressing Claire, though. I actually went to check if it was pulling Steam data like OneShot or Doki Doki Literature Club...
Thank you. So chill and just what I needed. I've finished it so many times, I don't even count anymore. The headband story is about a tortoise and a hare. 😌 Edit: PLEASE GO BACK TO THE BOTTOM AND KEEP EXPLORING! You haven't seen everything and all trails lead back to Hawk Peak, unless you make it to Sid's Beach.
This is my favorite game of all time :-) I’ve played it so many times, but I actually super enjoy watching people play it for the first time. It’s so cozy!
If you wanna gun for the peak, this game is pretty short. I recommend not doing so, though. There are a _ton_ of small little stories, hidden gubbins, and precious characters. Not just up the hike, either, there's a lot of things lower down as well. You'll want to take your time.
Having now played this game, I can finally watch it! And can confirm, it is great for decompression. I was getting a bit steamed playing Shovel Knight (kept dying over and over) so I switched games and this made me feel a lot better.
This looks like the golden ages of when every series got a game made or remade on the DS. So a lot of high quality games. Think about it. can you even think from off the top of your head if there were any bad sonic games on the ds?
I was one of the people that suggested this game as my first thought after experiencing it was that it was such a Play frame game just chill and pretty and charming.
YES!! I was hoping you would play this game, it's so fitting for this channel. A word of advice though: Take it slow, explore the whole island, talk to all the folks and explore their whole dialog. It'd be a shame if you missed some of the great moments this game has to offer.
Dan: "Maybe these are like shortcuts. And I gotta unblock whatever is blocking the other side somehow." Wow, Dan, you *do* need a break from Metroidvanias for a while.
Oh hey, I recommended this in the Steel Soul finale, guess you were already on it! I still need to play it though so I will save this for later. Have fun!
17:20: This is a silly game. I approve. 27:25: You should submit your Hat% speedrun. 46:30: OH NO I'M STUCK HELP 6:10: ...does Dan remember he was supposed to go _north?_ 15:40: That's how hiking areas work, yes. 27:40: I remember the dev talking about a cave he added to the far side of the island so players who just swam around the island looking for secrets instead of following the intended path would eventually get to the right spot. Maybe this is that cave. 32:55: You can see it in her animations. 48:05: Thaaat's capitalism!
Fun fact-it's actually 3S, just with simple models and some kind of pixelation filter. It gave the game a distinctive look while also letting the dev get away with simple assets. (I watched a dev diary the other week.)
@@DavidBeaumont I don't know about the dev diary, but the creator's gdc talk gives a good summary of many aspects of the game: th-cam.com/video/ZW8gWgpptI8/w-d-xo.html
if you dont slow down and explore and fish and stuff more you're going to have a lot of loss unfinished chains at the end of this, not the type of game you want to rush to the end you will miss ALOT.
Quelle surprise! A game I'm actually going to wait to watch the video because I own and want to play myself. Mostly I've been enjoying watching games I can't afford or wouldn't enjoy playing. A capital choice, sir, may I recommend an appropriate beverage? (Sorry, Carrie, I was thinking something more like sparkling elderflower)
Some games like this I bounce hard off of, but this one I didn't. I wonder whether the writing was just executed better or if I'm just more inclined to like something I can get over a dozen air charges in.
Yeah, sympathetic (or possibly just pathetic) scalper, but still a scalper. I have a lot more sympathy for the guy I met years ago who entered Magic: the Gathering tournaments, and then sold the booster packs he won as prizes at a bit less than the list price for boosters but enough to cover his entry fee and turn a small profit. On the other hand, the guy's not a real-world scalper; he's a gameplay mechanic with a layer of flavour on top, and "take all your money for moderate gameplay benefit" is a well-established mechanic.
I'm more with Dan here. Scalping is wrong, but it's wrong in the same way that (say) investment banking is-you're making money by moving around stuff other people made, not by producing value yourself. The difference is that investment bankers make the rich richer, while that scalper is trying to get a poor college kid through school. I can't get mad at him without getting mad at basically everyone with wealth and power, and I can't muster that kind of revolutionary indignation when I'm trying to chill with a chill game.
I’m confused. I made it to the top of the thing with 6 feathers and in 25 min. After the call with mom she told me to say hi to aunt may and I caught a draft that landed me back at the base. Did I beat the game or just break it?
The "intended" resolution of the pixel filter is too low, I agree. To anyone who wants to play it, I recommend going into the advanced graphic settings and changing it to 200. This only makes the game prettier and more comprehensible, without laying bare the polygons.
That wave physics early on irritates me - the water welling up in the middle of a patch of sand just because it's lower than the surroundings just isn't how real-life beaches and waves work...

I don't care what Dan says, his voice acting adds a lot to these text heavy games. I thoroughly enjoy the life he puts into the characters

Maybe for the dumpster fire that is AAA gaming. Indies will save us all 🦸
Hopefully the future of internet connectivity is more universal.

It's Such a Great Game. A perfect game for the channel. My first playthrough made me cry, but in the best way. I hope they make another game like it!
It’s like Animal Crossing crossed with... I dunno. Old DS 3D.
Animal Crossing and Breath of the Wild is what I thought while playing it.
Yeah, it's very BOTW with the stamina and climbing anything mechanic
The cool thing is. Its actually a filter, and u can change how pixelated it looks.
So _Wild World_ basically.
You know what this art style reminds me of? A more pixely version of Animal Crossing. I like it.
I know we got a great sample of it in the Psychonauts playthrough, but Dan's ability to choose voices for NPCs and then _remember which ones to use_ is pretty amazing.
His ability to pick up on context cues, like the obviously-different-to-the-surroundings Rubber Flowers, is still a _little_ infuriating
