    Super. I remember reading about this and another Gypsy in a train magazine when I was young. I am glad that somebody saved her. 💙 T.E.N. Edit: there were two Gypsies. The Bear Harbor, and the Falk. Slightly different in design, the Falk got a very nice, hand built oak cab provided by a gentleman carpenter awile back, but I haven't seen or heard of her since then. 🙂

      P.S. I also remember that that gentlemen carpenter who hand built the cab on one of the Gypsies (Falk) also owned it. Both of the Gypsy locomotives would fit right in on my railroad, as the sugar beet mill is serviced by the trolley line, (4 3/4 inch radius curves) and there is a logging spur and lumber mill where the locomotives and rolling stock are still equipped with Link and Pin couplers. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

    Ah found the reference for the winch in the front to answer any questions. Here it is "Bear Harbor was the scene of the most unusual railroad lines in history. In order to transport logs...a winch lowered and raised the locomotive and cars over the first very steep stretch of track near Bear Harbor. Past Usal road the train ran on it's own power"

    Question, would you happen to know how many tons this fine little Logging Loco can haul?

    • @RailyardProductions
      @RailyardProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it's a 9 ton locomotive.

    • @tracynation2820
      @tracynation2820 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If it weighs 18,000 pounds, (9 Tons) all on the drive wheels, you can expect around 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of tractive effort. (Pull) Rain, snow, grease, oil, grass, sand on the rails, and the rails condition will easily change that number, as well as using the winch to help pull the load, which is only limited by the anchor, cable, and winch capacity. (Probably another 20,000 pounds or more (?) of pulling power.) 💙 T.E.N.

      I assume you are joking. If not, that big, geared wheel up front is a winch with a drum that a cable would be wrapped around, used for pulling logs out of the woods.

      With 24" wheels, a good guess would be 25 to 30 MPH tops, but 20 MPH was probably the highest speed when she was hauling a load. They not only used the winch for dragging logs, they also used it as a crane, (Pulley attached to tree or pole, locomotive tied to track) and as a winch to pull the locomotive and train along the tracks when the load was too heavy. 💙 T.E.N.

    A very nice video of quite obscure locomotive! Just one question though: What exactly is the big gear up in the front though? I didn't see any movement from it, so I'm curious as to it's purpose...

    • @RailyardProductions
