I live in a climate where I can overwinter my chilli plants if I really wanted to. I might try this when our winter hits. The plants look amazing and is definitely a nice feature to a home.
Just fyi, the finer smaller roots are feeder roots, they are the ones which absorb nutrients from the soil, the thicker roots are structural, and in bonsai, used for aesthetics.
Excellent idea! Every year I have to witness the more than 100+ Chilli and bell pepper plants die when winter comes in Canada! This year surely I shall try to gain some of them.
Awesome, I have pondered doing this for some time but wasn't too sure how to start it off. Now that I do there are going to be so many of them in my house. Fingers crossed my wife approves as well !
Thanks for the info. I have a 2 year old reaper plant that’s taken up my wife’s entire aero garden. I’m gonna try this if I can get it out without killing it.
Wish I had seen this back in the fall. My habanero plants did exceptionally well in 2021 growing up to 3 to 3.5 feet and very bushy. I always heard that you can winter the pepper plants inside but I don’t have the room for that. Will defined try this! Thanks for sharing
Very nice video. I was just talking about doing a bonchi yesterday. Now I think I will. Still have a few peppers out in the yard that haven't croaked yet. Thank you.
Good job! I did the same thing, and only two of my six plants survived. Timing when to transplant is the hardest part. My indoor air tends to dry out the foliage, so over-pruning is bad if the growth nodes dry out. Next time I transplant for indoors I will try adding fresh compost as suggested in this video, to see if that helps it acclimate to indoors better.
Wow cool idea! I have a Carolina reaper that is coming up to it's 4th season indoors in the UK, wish I'd trimmed it earlier in it's life, it's huge. Great job!
Great video. I cant wait to see your first video of the new season to see what you are growing. I really hope you have a type of primotali to grow. I started my seeds today.
Great little video - may I suggest spending a little coin and getting a pair of pointy nose Bonsai shears or a good quality small pointy utility/garden snips; it will seriously help you trim back the roots. Loved the vid and all the best with your Bonchi 👍🏼☺️🤩
Hello Chump, if you want to get the full disinfectant power of isopropanol, you should mix it with 30% water. Pure alcohols tend to dehydrate the outermost layer of bacteria etc. so that the alcohol cannot diffuse into the cell to kill it. Edit: love the idea of Bonchi´s
What better way to start off a new year other than to enjoy the skill of a master craftsman creating a Bonchi display. Those are two interesting plants to follow their regrowth with. You have a very refined display all set up with your Ikea stand by a sunny window. Happy New Year 2021 Shaun and Ms ChilliChump!! -Bob...
I don’t know much about bonchi but I grow chillies and have a large bonsai collection. I noticed there was no drainage hole in your pot. We normally try to get as much drainage in bonsai as possible and put a screen over the hole to stop pests from getting to the roots and soil washing away. I also use very well draining soil or substrate, which lets oxygen get to the roots and helps to develop small feeder roots. I also try to get the roots in a radial pattern and not crossing to help develop the base of the tree. Maybe it’s different in bonchi. I will have to give it a go.
There is a drainage hole. The pot I am using has a small round white plug. It is slightly raised, and has vents under to allow water to drain, but not let soil clog it up. In my other pot I use mesh cloth over the drainage hole.
So nice, I'm gonna give it a shot when this season ends, looks amazing, you don't lose much if it doesn't work, and you can enjoy some super hots all year long :P Great video very simply explained for everyone without too much unnecessary information! New sub here :)

No need for nutrients in the first month or so. I will start a light feeding soon though. Yes they will produce peppers. You can lot up if you want. But I want to keep this small. Will see how it goes!

Good job with the bonchies. I have one at home but it probably have died since I left it there three weeks ago. Having bonchi is like having a pet - cannot leave it for a longer period of time.
You might add that Ikea's Växer range of goods has been discontinued sadly. I got the same frame as you with 2 hydroponics basins/seed starter boxes. The rockwool plugs are also discontinued because of it so if you got one of the växer hydro-bins, you're going to need to find replacement plugs that fit or trim your own.

Great stuff to start the New Year with. Had put 3 cut back peppers in smaller pots for the winter and failed miserably, maybe too little grow light time. How many hours of grow light do your Bonchies get currently?
I live in the UK myself so I wasn't 100% sure if we could grow chilis to that level of thickness, would I need to put it in a greenhouse or would it be okay just by itself in the garden? I've mostly got mine growing on windowsills indoors, but I don't know if that's only necessary for the winter or whether you can winter the chilis in a greenhouse.
Sweet, I've got a couple of chillis and a couple of bonsai pots so I should really try this out. I noticed you did it to an already matured plant though, is that the preference? or it it just because you're doing it as a way to winter your plants instead of letting them die? Thanks man! I'm in Aus so don't need to winter plants thankfully, but sometimes it would be nice to clear some space for something new and I guess I'm sentimental and dont like killing a 4 year old plant
