Northern Ireland police release Gerry Adams

The Irish Republican leader Gerry Adams has been released from custody after several days of questioning over a murder committed forty years ago. He says he's the victim of a malicious campaign to link him to the death of Jean McConville. The mother of ten was abducted and shot by the IRA in 1972 after being suspected of being a British informer. Al Jazeera's Tim Friend reports from Belfast.

The police Service of Northern Ireland would like to thank Gerry Adams for all the valuable information he has divulged in confidence to them with regards to the activities of the IRA, their members and the actions they took part in.
He has proven to be a very co-operative individual indeed and the PSNI now look forward to using the information he has provided having attended the police station voluntarily in order to clear his conscience. The PSNI now look forward to talking to other members of the IRA following information provided by Mr Adams's
