STUXNET: The Virus that Almost Started WW3

In June last year, a computer virus called Stuxnet was discovered lurking in the data banks of power plants, traffic control systems and factories around the world.
Pandora's box has been opened; on the new battlefield the aggressors are anonymous, the shots are fired without starting wars and the foot soldiers can pull their triggers without leaving their desks.
Last week the United States government announced they would retaliate to a cyber-attack with conventional force. The threat is real, and the age in which a computer bug could cost lives has begun.

One of the things that the video failed to mention is that the virus didn't just shut down the centrifuges. If it had just shut them down, they could have patched the software and got them back up and running (and they possibly could have detected the virus). Rather, the virus altered the RPMs of the device so it would generate a resonating frequency which would destroy the device over time. To the layman's eye, it would appear that the centrifuges were operating perfectly.

It's called adobe After Effects and polymorphic 3d models. The designer is world-class, carefully panned cameras, made transitions, placements, and attention to the mood, inflection, or timing of the narrator. This person specializes in these types of infomercials. But in this case, it's no commercials, this is something people would pay millions for on the dark web/black market at that time.

For everyone wondering, the number of zero-days was indeed 4, but that is only counting Windows.
There were a number of others used for various control systems, network infrastructure and propagation & infiltration methods.
Many of them were included as redundancies. I'm not sure if the number was 20, but it was more than the 4 used solely for Windows.

    • @SaintBrick
      @SaintBrick ปีที่แล้ว

@@botdfbvb This is not remotely correct.
Researches had samples of the virus.
The researches spent significant time reverse engineering it on multiple operating systems. Which was part of what clued them into the fact that it had different exploits for different systems.
While researching stuxnet they found the exploits and, at least one of which was a zero day.
It doesn't matter what other vulnerabilities exist, stuxnet can't just magically exploit them.

it all depends on the systems used. If you think about things on a different level, we can root into a server on the other side of the country, install software and activate it. I run a VPS server with my hosting company running CENTOS and I plan on installing a serverside version of Minecraft so technically an "open source weapon" theory wouldn't be too far off. Sure, you would need to know the inner workings of the systems but finding an angry employee wouldn't be too hard.

Actually, while the title might be sensational, it's not entirely incorrect because of Israel's escalation - the original American Stuxnet code, called Olympic Games, was relatively safe and targeted the Iran power plant, but Israel kept pressuring the USA to make it more powerful until, like a bunch of irresponsible assholes, they did it themselves and released it without permission or knowledge from the USA. That's how Stuxnet came back and attacked American infrastructure targets and Homeland Security was never told about their own country's involvement while fighting it.
Iran became aware of what had happened and sent 2 serious viruses to the USA to show they knew what was going on and were capable of fighting back in cyberspace. In response, the USA has infected most of Iran's infrastructure with a virus that can cripple their entire cities in an instant. This escalation has had similarities to the nuclear arms race which opens a theoretical path to WWIII, but luckily Iran has agreed to sanctions to stop their nuclear program.

my computer science professor was talking about stuxnet the other day. he said the virus itself was so advanced and the coding was so complex it was like finding an iphone in the 1970s, so he had a hard time believing anyone could have designed it.
what that may mean is that the virus was sent here from the future. maybe iran ended up developing nukes which lead to a war, and someone was able to send a virus to our time to try to stop it. thats just my theory.

The whole "open source weapon" part is slightly exaggerated.
The virus alone won't help you to shut doun an oil pipeline- you'll need things like detailed information on the inner workings of it's components (not the sort of information you can google), actual people to go there and physically put the virus in the right control panel, and so on, and so forth. So just hackers won't do much damage.
That's not to say this is not a dangerous situation, but it's not "die hard 4" dangerous yet.

It was only set back my a little less than a year. But Iran also gained huge amounts knowledge and power in the cyber world when they figured it was a virus and they then adapted the virus to attack USA. Which they did twice. One attack was against an American oil company that wiped the source code off of 30k devices. And one against several American banks that brought all their activities to a halt.

1 year. Israel really messed it up. 4 zero days is likely 10 million - 50 million, it likely cost 100k and so much effort to create the military grade virus. The goal was to shutdown the plant, and destroy the program by getting into the Engineers heads (it was assumed they wouldn't find the virus in time as it deletes itself).
Then Israel went rogue and added a line of code, the ONLY bug in the entire code which is unheard of. The single line Unit 2800 put in then turned it into a worm which immediately got into the real world, with the media attention Iran figured it out pretty quick.
Basically this was a very high level, sophisticated, multi-nation failure. I'm sure Israel had their reasons, but all that effort and funds to set Iran back just a single year which is far from a success.
Germany was also heavily involved. That doesn't get mentioned much.
