Dear Jen, I have just recently 'discovered' The Dream Prague on TH-cam. Born in Prague and living on Vancouver Island. Emigrated in '69 at the age of 22. You are so entertaining and informative. The first time I heard you say 'tak, uvidime se pristi tyden' brought tears to my eyes. Love what you do.

Hello, nice video, I just can't agree with the statement that the Czech Republic will adopt the euro. as a native of Czech , I would be offended to pay in my own country with the Euro. I do not take into account that the prices would fly even higher than the use of the euro implies extra taxes on the use of the euro. Have a nice day

@@danielhlavacek4427 Interesting thought. For me the reasons are especially a bank in foreign country - and today's world is kinda unpredictable, what would happen? The second reason is numerical mess. Especially in the grocery stores we're used to see prices which are numerically like: 27, 54, 71 and after adopting the euro as a currency the numbers would shift like: 1, 2, 3.

@@danielhlavacek4427 But the statement is true. We are obliged to eventually accept the Euro as our currency by the laws of EU. So sooner or later it will happen unless there is some big change like EU breaking apart/Czech republic cancelling membership or something like that.

Beautiful heritage city centre, lovely parks, cheap beer (including lot of local breweries - hopefully they'll survive the covid restrictions) but also great wine available everywhere for a bargain (which is much harder to get in Bohemia)... I've been in Ireland for the past 2 years but I really miss Olomouc.
Also (referring to your video title and tags) I think that most Czech people don't like the recently introduced "Czechia" thing - whenever I talk to my friends I always say Czech Republic because Czechia just confuses everyone (especially people who didn't even notice we're not Czechoslovakia anymore :D ) and gets easily mixed up with Chechnya. I really think it's an unfortunate choice by the government to push this new name of our country.

Nice video (again). You could mention that forging of Czech banknotes is very difficult due to many security features: watermark, strip with microtext on it, coloured fibres, register mark, hidden picture, fluctuating colour, iridiscent strip and microtext :) And also mention tourist advice: change rates in some exchange offices in Prague are just scamming (see Honest Guide) but that there is a law allowing to revoke exchange transaction up to 3 hours (a bill needed). Large cities are cheaper than Prague but you get a lower salary. If you like travelling, visit Olomouc (living here now), the centre of Haná (poor surroundings but nice city), or Znojmo (my birth place) with fantastic centre and amazing surroundings, I can gice you a lot of tips for a week of roaming (and the South Moravia with vine cellars, Mikulov, Pálava, of course).

    Hi, Jennifer,
    Sir_Mac here as always!
I can't thank you enough for this particular video! You are awesome! I have to admit I was expecting that US system is more developped than the czech system. And I was wrong ... :-)
I don't know, if it works in US the same way as in the Czech republic, but let me tell you one practical opinion.
If you make the "journey" of the product shorter, it will cost less. For example - if you buy beer called "Bakalář" in the company store in Rakovník, where the beer is from, you can do it for 13 CZK per can, while in the supermarket, it will cost 16 CZK per can. Not much difference with one can, but if you buy 30 cans ... ? :-)
Other example from the countryside. If you have a neighbour, who has hens, you can get, let's say, truly fresh 20 eggs per 60 CZK. In supermarket, it will cost at least 100 CZK and you don't know nothing about the quality or the age of those 20 egss.
And the last tip, which someone uses on regular basis and someone hates it. I would call it "discount hunting" (honění slev). If there is something, let's say fabric softener, 2 liters per 100 CZK regularly, and it is discounted to 79 CZK, it is worth.
But be careful, many times, the discounts are an illusion. If something costs 100 CZK regularly and you will see it another day and the actual price is 100 CZK and it is said it costed 150 CZK and the discount is 33%, you can see it is fake discount.
Generally, countryside could be easily cheaper and you can get there anything you want. We (the Czech republic) have the transportation companies, as PPL, DPD or other.
Did you know that there is particular law / act in the Czech republic, which says the highest amount of physical money possible, which can be paid by? Now the limit is, I believe 270 000 CZK.
    Sir_Mac

Oh god, when I first heared about US healthcare system it changed my opinion of US entirely, before I thought that USA is the most andvanced society from who we should learn, but when I heared about the mess they call healthcare system, where money is more valuable than human life, I was shocked. Now I would call myself more of a socialist then capitalist, maybe It is because I am still quite young (17). Video about healthcare differences would be great!
BTW have you heared about the opinion that when you are young, you are more socialist-minded and gradually when you are getting older you are becoming more and more capitalist-minded. Interesting isnt it ?

    • @mistrteoretik5967
      @mistrteoretik5967 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lukasvytisk5636 It is everywhere that money is more important than human life. Life saving is a job for which doctors are paid, like all other workers. The difference is in the payment system - in the Czech Republic, everyone pays health insurance for everyone, which is advantageous for those who would not normally be able to afford health insurance. In the US, everyone pays for health insurance themselves. And unfortunately, there are a lot of people who can't afford what they need. They have the choice of dying or living the rest of their lives with great debt. In the Czech Republic, through the system that everyone is compulsorily insured and everyone pays a certain percentage of their income to such people, their wealthy fellow citizens pay insurance.

    Two comments:
    1. Chips (front loading, not swiping) and tap (near field tech) work well now in North America - at least in Canada. I tap my way through the day, every day.
    2. I live in Canada and have relatives in CZ, I used TransferWise (where your money is not crossing borders) to convert and transfer money. I have not used that account for a while,
but I got a very good rate with a small fee a year or two back ... nothing compared with any bank or credit card (some Visa cards can have good exchange rates).
There are different services like that around. Changing money through the bank is the last thing one would want to do.
The above services are especially good for a regular larger transfers + very transparent: here is what you send, here is what the other person gets..

When the cards started to become common in Czech Republic the transactions were already handled electronically/online. But before that the card was only used as data carrier for printing the receipts and the transactions were handled similarly to cheques. That's why the signature was needed. Since the USA started to adapt cards in that conditions it's probably why the signing was the thing and it might just survive until now.

Reminds me of my experience when paying with my Czech debit card in Vietnam: The cashier would always ask me to sign the receipt... just below the field it said in English: "no signature needed". But the cashier was adamant. :) And another thing: There seem to be no PINs used for card payments in Japan, which feels odd when you're used to entering the PIN for more expensive purchases. And I've witnessed a Japanese tourist perplexed when he was asked to enter a PIN. I suspect he didn't have any - or if he had, he never used it. So, some interesting local differences in the global system.

Hi Jen, I would like to add some insight into the debit cards with chips for you. If your card is compromised, either by skimming or obtaining the data in some other way, the criminals can make a clone of your card, but they can only produce cards with the magnetic stripes. They have so far been unable to crack and copy the chips. This means (in a very very simplified, almost an oversimplified, way, mind you) that if my card is skimmed and a clone is used in, say, Indonesia, to withdraw money from my bank account via an ATM, and I report it to my bank, or my bank finds out and tells me and I confirm that it was an unauthorized transaction, I get my money back, because the transaction was not authorized properly, making it the responsibility of the bank.
By the way, US banks have been increasing the percentage of cards with chips over the last decade or so too, but it is still nowhere near the percentage in Europe.

    • @DreamPrague
      @DreamPrague  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

thanks for the info about the security of the chip! The strange thing is, even though my US cards now have chips, it's still required for the prodavačka to get your signature on a piece of paper. And the chip doesn't work contactless!! So archaic.

It is much safer now. The most common card theft was by adding scanning device into ATMs so if you put card inside thieves would scan it but now many ATMs have also chip readers so you do not have to insert card inside. Also many vendor machines or even public transport ticket machines accept only chip cards so especially US travelers have problems buying tickets for public transport because chip cards are not that common there.

I would also add that there's a difference between credit cards and debit cards. Credit cards are essentially loans - it's not actually your money whereas debit cards are linked to your actual bank account and if you don't have money on your account then too bad for you (unless, of course, you have contocurrent account). When my friend went to the US she was shocked that nobody actually wanted her very real debit card money and instead had to get herself a credit card.

I had Cesky Budvar in a movie theater in Garmish, Germany back in 1988. That is the best I have ever had. I've had Pilsner Urquell, too. The 2nd best beer (pivo) I've had was a Belgian beer (Duvel) in a fancy restaurant in Del Ray Beach, FL.

I like your videos very much, you're talking not too fast and clearly.

After all, maybe we have VAT and higher income taxes, but very very low property, and other taxes.
We dońn’t. have to pay tax from ouur car every year, also cheap insurance ( compared to others) ) and so on.
After COVID era we moved even more from cash to use cards, mobiles and smat watch to pay in shops.

Oh definitelly come to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm! It's a beautiful town in Moravian Wallachia with lots of options for hiking, other sport and fun activities, open air museum of Wallachian culture and architecture, and even a beer spa :) I must admit, it's a bit touristy, so some places can be little more expensive, but nowhere as expensive as Prague.

I live in Opava, city near Ostrava. One word to desribe it - culture. The oldest museum of Czechia does its job. When I was in Prague visiting part of my family I was scared of the cost of beer or Kofola (have you ever tried it? I recommend it!). In here, it's much more cheaper. I believe, that the cost of beer is normal, just in Prague it's expensive, because of tourism and salaries there.
Wish you health in this crisis.

Have you ever considered maybe comparing something like crime rate in California/LA and Prague in general or how you see things in a perspective? Sometimes a lot of people in Czechia and Slovakia hear things about US, guns and crime etc. Not an very pleasant topics but would be definitely worth to hear about

I noticed a big difference when it comes to paying with card in CZ. Your card will never be out of your sight, they bring the little gizmo to you to pay at your table; here in the US they take off with your card and return several minutes later with the receipt for you to sign. Cloning is not a huge problem here but people getting ahold of your credit card information is.

Hojně ho využívají hlavně bohatí lidé z ostatních koutů USA a kupují si tam domy. Byl o tom moc zajímavý dokument - o makléřích, jejich klientech a nárocích těchto lidí na vybavení nemovitostí.
    Přeji vám fajn den.

    Hello Jen,
according to Czech law merchants cannot refuse any banknotes. Only if they are unable to return money on such a high value of banknote. Also you can pay in coins with limitation of 50 pieces of coins for one purchase and value of coins is not important.
And one more limitation for payments in cash, the maximum amount you can pay in cash is equivalent of 10 000 EUR i.e. 270 000 CZK.
Of course in reality it is quite different and sometimes merchants refuse you payments.

Fun fact: big grocery store brands (PENNY, BILLA, LIDL, Albert - I'm not sure about the other ones, I don't go there that much) actually allow payments with euros (but I think they only accept euros in cash if they do), but they're getting Czech crowns to people in return. Lots of Czechs are go shopping to Germany or travel to other eurozone countries, so if they have some euros, they still can use them. Or if foreigners have some euros, they can use them too. (We don't like offending people just because they won't be able to buy foodstuffs, drinks, toilet paper etc. because they didn't prepared crowns for their grocery shopping.)

Hi, nice video. Shops in smaller czech towns are usually cheaper than the center of Prague.. on most gas stations in Czech they take the Euro (or money exchange), same as in larger markets. We also pay via Paypal acc., usually goods from abroad (U.S.A., Germany, England, etc.) with no others fees.. some banks do not charge any fees too - when receiving, for example, 10 or 15 thousand czech crowns and more monthly regular income...👍

Hello, I'm from Litoměřice. One of the oldest Royal Cities in Czech Republic and with one of the biggest historical square in the center. Still we have only 35k of citizens, co we are small city in a comparison with Prague :) Bankomat is on every corner here and you can pay by the card almost everywhere, even in many fastfoods out of town focused on tourists and cyclists. What I se more and more a lot of people are using theyr phones and smartwatches to pay in the markets, even elder people. So, we are very progressive in using of hi-techs :D
