- The Marine Boot Camp is tough y’all and this is my real reaction. When I joined the Air Force, I had no idea the difference between Air Force and Marine Basic Training. In this video you can see my reaction between the two. I definitely gotta say, Marine Basic training seems a lot more tough than Air Force Basic Training.

The fact that Air Force lets trainees get their cell phones during BMT is hilarious to me! My son is a Marine, so when he went to boot camp the only call I received from him was the scripted call on the night that he arrived to Parris Island. After that, there was radio silence for 90 days. I received letters, but that was all. My daughter recently left for Air Force bmt, and she has texted and called me USING HER CELL a few times already, lol! Every time we talk, I have to laugh out loud at how different her and her brother's experiences are 😌 ( and yes, as a parent that scripted recruit call is a VERY tough one to receive.)

the phones are used for trainees to text pertinent information such as address to send letters to.

for all of basic but we never use our phones besides that

i served in the Marines during 2003-2007. this was an awesome react video. the "I should've joined the Air Force' echoed in my mind SO MUCH during Boot Camp and MCT. it was so funny you mentioned it during the video. Thank you for this video! Keep up the hard work, Airmen. S/O to all of my Vet out there. We've all endured hell despite being in different branches of the US military.

Damn, I can see how crazy that would get. I’m sure everyone was trying to destroy each other lol. But it was probably inevitably either the biggest and buffest dude, or the dude who already had some kind of training prior to military service 😂

I remember being a young Marine in the 80s sitting in a fox hole in Michigan as it filled with water and having a black plastic trash bag as a poncho. I was thinking I should have joined the air force. Many years later, I did just that. They put me in a fox hole with much better equipment. 😂
Oof haha. There’s definitely a big difference too between Pre-2000s Marine boot camp and Post-2000s boot camp.
You were in the marines in the times before cell phones and cameras everywhere. No one was coming in like this and video taping large chunks of boot camp, and there were no federal laws preventing DIs from hazing and verbally abusing their recruits.
I commend you for what you might have gone through, much tougher than these days.
I’m old. I went to boot camp in 1995. Beautiful thing about the Marine Corps is that making Marines doesn’t really change. We didn’t have the crucible, that started a couple of years later. We didn’t have optics on the rifle range. Everything else is the exact same. It feel good deep in my soul to know that today’s boots are being trained to the same standards as I was and that I was held to the same standards as the Marines that came before me.
There is no doubt that the intensity is a little different. A good friend of mine was an MTI and his stories of BMT always made me laugh. But y’all aren’t making Marines, you’re making Airmen and the entire reason for being for the two is radically different. At the end of the day both are doing a fantastic job of building the finest military force the world has ever seen.
As an aside, when a young person talks to me about enlisting I always ask why they want to join. If they say anything other than “I want to be a Marine” I’ll strongly recommend against the Corps. I love the Marine Corps but it isn’t for everyone. If you want anything other than to be a Marine you’ll be miserable. Undecided people always get told to go Air Force. When it comes to preparing people for life after service the Chair Force gets it right.
Yeah I'm old too....went to boot camp (PI) in '85. No crucible or optics and the rifle range...just iron sights on a M16 A1. Had the smoking pots to dull your sights against sun glare. Of course no cell phones as they were not a thing then. We wrote a letter home saying we had arrived and that we were ok. All that under DI's screaming in your ears. Wish I had that letter today haha. Semper Fi Devil Dog...
If it makes you feel any better I went through PI in early 2011 and we didn't have optics either. We did have the Crucible though, it's actually kinda fun at first, the key words being "at first." 😂
Really… '73 here. M14. Babes… And we ran around singing in the gas chamber. One day of swim qual. You either passed or failed. We had 4 out of 85 pass. I spent 45 minutes of blissful silence “floating” at the bottom of the pool because I couldn't float. Best day EVER! Just looking at the other 3 treading water for 45 minutes.

They have 2 different cammies (woodland/dessert). They still don't get their phones at Bootcamp. There's also no phone call before graduation to make arrangements or give instructions. And the crucible is a 54-hour event where the recruits go through training exercises and hike "the reaper" with at least 45lbs of gear on their backs and only 6 hours of sleep and 2 MRE'S
That’s intense. I’m honestly considering creating a video just on the crucible. Lol. I’m totally unaware of what happens there.

My two older brothers went into the Air Force. I enlisted in the Marine Corps. It’s been decades since we got out of service but I still have my high and tight haircut. My oldest brother always says to his wife about me every time I visit them, “He is a real Marine.” Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I was scared of heights. The tower had me shaking... looking back after being a light armored recon scout with 3rd LAR as an 0311 in Afghanistan.. I'm still scared of heights.

They left one crucial thing out of the Crucible: the humps (hiking with a 45+ lbs. pack) totaling 40+ miles during those 54 hours. This documentary makes it look like you just crawl around in the dirt for 54 hours.

Yeah there’s definitely more that goes on, but I’m sure they left certain things out for either legal reasons or just to make the video shorter.
I went through that stuff 30 years ago. Same speeches, places, DI's, everything. No phone then. The consistency is really amazing. Nice vid.
Yup. Forced to write a letter on one of those first nights, right before you have to go to sleep while it was still light outside, so you're wide awake questioning your decision to join. 😄
I was in boot camp in 75 and I was on the buddy system and my friend couldn't swim so each time he failed the swimming test I got recycled with him put me back about 2 weeks. I enjoyed it made alot of good friends and still have fond memories of it
That's why I don't by the "lack of fit condidates" argument for missing recruiting goals. You could show up a food blister, but the Marines will work on you until you meet the standard and graduate at some point or quit. The services fall short because they are being culturally subverted by the political class, turning the services into an "inclusive" crap show it's not worth the effort to be a part of.

Great video! Definitely helps young people decide which branch is for them. I did 25 years in the Marines, my wife did 4, my son did 4 navy and my daughter did 6 air force. Each branch has its own personality which matches up with different people. S/f Master Guns

I also just want to say Thank You for being so helpful and giving us well needed and accurate tips on joining up for the Airforce. The content you make is inspiring and I hope that what I learn from the Airforce I can apply to my everyday life and also help others and give them tips on the military and Airforce in general, Thank You, I found a new passion through you and several other military creators and I never thought I'd join two years ago but here I am today working on becoming a future Airman. Marine from 03-15. I remember all the way up to the last day of boot camp thinking I can't believe I am actually here. I was living the dream. 12 years as an infantryman and 7 deployments later, I was asked to leave as the war ended. I miss it daily.

i went to marine basic training in December 2009. we got 2 phone calls: 1. at arrival 2. upon passing the crucible to let our family know that we were graduating next week.

I had the fortunate benefit of not only earning the title of being a Marine but also training them. From the Drill Instructor point of view it was astonishing watching these nasty things transfor from forming day 1 to training day 70, graduation. Best time in my whole life. Semper Fi

I'm from the 1980's at Lackland and we just mailed a post card that we arrived. So in realty, they just assumed we made it safely, until the postcard showed up maybe 4 or 5 days later. We got to call home after 6 days, but I started BMT on a Monday.
I graduated February 24 and before that was watching a lot of your videos. Appreciate the content! I’m in tech school at Lackland for contracting and I swear i think i saw you there!!! (also when i was there the gas chamber was not up, said they were making repairs to that and the obstacle courses which they now say they have to rename them to confidence courses/ leadership courses due to a new change or sum like that)

Jody I appreciate your videos. I am going into the reserves this summer on May 23. You definitely need more content geared to that recruiting process. I am already a junior in college and taking a short semester break then going to try to go to OTS. She has went above and beyond with helping me and taking care of a lot of back and stuff for me and I genuinely have had other recruiters that treated me poorly but her help has been worth it. I have to drive three hours to see her but I’m glad to be in the process.

When I went thru in the army at Fort Benning it was all male. We also spent two weeks on weapons. The first week was classroom, and hands on on how to properly maintain the light machine guns and M16/M4s. The second week was range week, where we did live fires for each weapon, LMGs, M203s, AT4, and so on.
God, seeing what they’ve been through I’m glad my best friend graduated lol. Still, Marines are beasts and I respect them as I would with any other branch.
When we did the gas bit in USAF boot camp we had to talk/yell to make sure we were breathing in the mask and any leaks would be immediately obvious. Then we got to take them off and talk until we got a big inhale of gas. Fun times.
Full Metal Jacket was popular when I was in high school. Reason I picked Marine Corps over Air Force. Took it as a personal challenge. We have different missions so that is why the training is different. But it is what we signed up for. Seerved from 90 to 98.
We didn't become Marines until graduation day and that is the first day parents were allowed.
Also, there was no off-base or on-base liberty, until graduation.
We were not allowed to wear our uniforms until graduation day, other than the 2-3 fittings we got.

They’re more tough than any other branch and I feel like they’ll help me grow more as a person. With the discipline they learn and they pride they have. While my company was at Pendleton for rifle range, we frickin had to stand, sit, get in and out of the bleachers for HOURS! We weren’t loud enough for our DI. Boot camp was a culture shock for sure.

Daddy was on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's staff during WW2 & Korean war . All my uncles served in WW2. 1 retired AF; 1 retired Navy, but all served.

Two weeks for guns, Jody? Our DI had us dry firing out behind the barracks for the week before the regular marksmanship training.
The basic course of fire was 200 yds offhand (standing), 300 yds sitting and kneeling, and 500 yds prone (laying down). When I was in, the top 5 or so shooters stayed on the range and fired 600 yards and got to quality with the Colt 1911 .45. I was one of them. All of our shooting was with open iron sights, no scopes, no red dots (not invented yet?).
Crazy to hear a grown man in the U.S. who's unaware of the making of a Marine. I feel like I could hear those drums in my second trimester.

Traffic is gonna be more administrative. You’re dealing with helping arrange their moving itineraries.
Material management is ordering the supplies needed for the Air Force. You’re managing supplies and a warehouse.
Of course there’s a lot more involved with each one of these jobs, but this is an overall description. I hope it helps.

got to react to what it takes to survive the marines 54-hour final test - boot camp
in combat (chaos), Army taps on the shoulder of another before moving, Marines run around and move forward, they know where we all are at all times............
I did it it back as well as a new schedule of training to better train marines
We arrived at night. We stayed awake, and I mean awake and alert, for about 36 hours before we were allowed to lay down. We did not call anyone while at Paris Island, South Carolina. We were in processing for 3 days before being assigned to our Platoon Series. My Platoon Series was 3076 H Company! I was in Platoon 3079. Once we were assigned to our Platoon, the Senior Drill Instructor, identified with a Black leather belt around his waist, introduced himself and the other two Drill Instructors. We stood Online for this introduction. The Senior Drill Instructor was given charge of training us by The Platoon Commander. Once that happened The Senior Drill Instructor gave charge to the other two Drill Instructors to train all 70 of us. Once they agreed to train us and we agreed to be trained, by The Senior Drill Instructor, all Hell broke loose! The other two Drill instructors began, with raspy, loud voices began giving orders. It was here that we understood why Paris Island truly was called "The Land that God forgot." On July 23rd, 1987 our worldview quickly changed!
We had a similar Process in 1975 at Parris Island. My Platoon had to wait 2 weeks for the series to pick up. We occupied our time by reading and memorizing our little red books and endlessly reciting our 10 General Orders at attention. All of this in our civilian clothes with no haircuts yet. We were as low as you could get, we were not even considered recruits yet. We were housed in old worn out wooden barracks. There were no DIs around just regular Marines who delighted in making us miserable. During this time I asked myself what the hell I had done many many times.
I head off to MEPS in 2 weeks, then I’ll be going to San Diego for BCT for the Marine Corp. oh and ima old soul lol 😂 28 years young! Let’s get some!!
I did 8 yrs in the Corp and 16 yrs in the AIR Force. As a Jet Mechanic and then a Load Master for the C-5
Finished basics Thursday. Their is no gas chamber right now but the obstacle course is active now

Boot camp is bouta cultural shock more than physical. I've seen chad lookin guys drop out and little weedy dudes struggle through and make it.

Yup, I went through BMT from Feb to April 2021. No gas chamber, beast week was only four days, and because they were short on instructors, we didnt do the obstacle course
I attended Air Force BT after covid (I went to basic training March 15th of this year) They didn't bring back the gas chamber by the time we got to beast. I could be some structural issues with the building itself. Idk, supposedly thats the reason. All we did was put on the suits.
I went thru Parris Island in 74. We started with 87 out of the original 87 we graduated 35 . Marine boot camp you are not allowed anything . No phones No Sodas the only food is from the chow hall /. 30 minutes to eat . 3 miles run every morning.
Honestly bmt was pretty rough, but compared to the other branches it's not that bad.

I basically went into the Marines because of a bogus dui charge. Bunkmate blew snot rockets into his sheets every night and ran away twice. Squad leader blew his foot of right next to me on a night shoot in MCT just to go home. Don't sign unless you know what your committing to. I do miss it though.
Yep… after 3.5 yrs of Air Force JROTC leadership, my son said “I want to be one of the best of the best.” Ummm. But what about the Air Force singing bonus? Don’t matter LOLOL Proud of my Marine.
The most frequently asked question on Parris Island has always been "Sir! Is it too late to switch to the Chair Force?" And subsequently, it always was.

All Marines go through Recruit Training, Infantry/Combat training and MOS training. I did all my training in California
Air Force basic training used to be even more of a joke before 9/11. They hadn't changed much yet when I went in November 2001: 6 weeks, no gas chamber (at least my flight didn't), 1 week joke of a field training exercise. I ran a total of 3 times, and 2 of those were the practice test and actual test. Somehow still had a dude throw himself down the stairs to get out of it though, he was still in the medical flight when we left.
I don't know hoss. Basic then jump school I'm the 80s was different. Respect to all branches. We all bleed the same. Stay strong and be ready.
Anybody that lives in the west side gets trained at Marine Recruit Depot San Diego. For example if you live in Chicago you would go to San Diego for basic training.

@@timothyorellana4174 I kind of said that in jest. I believe everything happens for a reason. If I didn't join the Marine Corps, my life might be totally different than it is now, which could be a good thing...or a bad thing. No one really knows. Before you sign anything, you should do a lot research, figure out what you think you might be interested in as a job (and possibly career afterward if you decide not to stay in) and then see what each one has to offer you. It also depends a lot on your asvab scores. In the end, go with your gut and what YOU think feels best for you. Good luck!

I was the 1st in fam to join Marines. When I got home after being sworn in, daddy said like a drill instructor, "You could've joined the Army, you could've joined the Navy, you could've joined the Air Force!!! But NOOO!!! You had to go join THE MARINES!!! THEY'RE THE FIRST TO DIE IN COMBAT!!!" Well daddy, you were wrong. I'm still alive at 66yrs old. Former grunt, scout, sniper, cook
My husband is a retired Gunny and my son knew better and joined the Air Force. lol I was surprised when my son was able to call us sometimes on his cell phone. Marines would only let you make that one and first call.

Back in the sixties we had at least 4 dress uniforms !

Dress greens
Dress blues
Parris Island sucked, but I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. The only thing I would change would be my job choice. There’s no civilian application for infantry or even security forces apparently, given my experience. Essentially I wasted 4 years shooting guns. It was fun, but I should’ve been thinking about the future instead of living in the now. Hindsight is 20/20.

we have 2 cammo or utility work uniforms. desert and woodland/green. a long sleeve khaki shirt for summer and a long sleeve khaki shhhhirt for winter. ggggggreen pants and blue pants. green (service)jacket and black (dress blue) jacket blue pants make the khaki shirts a dress uniform. green pants make the khaki shirts a service uniform. service coat only has green pants and dress coat only has blue pants. white hats are for dress uniforms and green hats are for service uniforms
