Using OCLP to install Monterey on this Mac Pro 3,1
Okay, I'm a day late and a dollar short for this one. Basically started recording it a few days before OCLP 1.0 was released.
Didn't get round to editing and uploading it due to other projects running at the same time and then suddenly Sonoma came out and OCLP 1.0 came out, by which point this one was in the schedule, so I just pushed it back a couple of weeks to allow some Sonoma stuff to move forward.
In the days since, I have tried and failed to install Sonoma on this MacPro and at the time of writing this updated info piece, I still haven't figured out why. So as of writing, this MacPro is a Windows 11/macOS Monterey dual boot machine.

Batocera as a Dual Boot OS with Linux Mint?
มุมมอง 2.1Kปีที่แล้ว
My favourite linux laptop (based on specification-to-price ratio) is mostly used by my son these days and he wanted it to be both a work horse (he likes playing with Scratch) and a games machine of sorts. I toyed with RetroArch but instead decided to go for a Batocera dual boot. It's not the recommended route but it works really well so far! Just remember the labels... (note to self). buymeacof...
Windows 11 & MacOS Sonoma on a classic Mac Pro 3,1?
มุมมอง 650ปีที่แล้ว
This Mac Pro is running Windows 11 as a solo OS, I just installed Sonoma on my 2012 Mac mini and was blown away by how well it works so I decided to get it installed on to the cMP 3,1 as a dual boot. This did not go to plan! buymeacoffee.com/rnddave
This 2011 ThinkPad x220 is a brilliant Linux Laptop
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
This ultra-portable laptop from 2011 has been in my ownership since 2019 but until recently, was lost to the bottom of a cupboard somewhere. My eldest child became aware of its existence and claimed it as his own. I forgot we even had it to be honest, but it's a great little laptop. This is a 2nd gen i7, currently with 6GB RAM, it already had Linux Mint on it, but in this video we talk about wh...
Can my 2012 MacMini run MacOS Sonoma?
มุมมอง 25Kปีที่แล้ว
Thanks to OpenCore Legacy Patcher, it can indeed run Sonoma. This MacMini is a little old and until today, it was just sitting under the TV as my Batocera Retro gaming rig. However, I am so amazed by how well MacOS Sonoma works on this particular piece of old tech that I might promote it to more of a daily computer (more than just retro gaming). Big shout out to the OCLP folks that make this po...
How did the classic MacPro 3,1 compare to the classic MacPro 2,1?
มุมมอง 76ปีที่แล้ว
My focus has shifted from the cMP2,1 to the far more capable cMP3,1. I stand by the fact that the cMP 2,1 is a bargain at the moment, but that 32bit refi does make it a little more challenging, the cMP3,1 can run some very new operating systems. I currently have Windows 11 running on this particular unit. This video however is not about the OS, it is a look at the similarities and differences b...
Until today, I secretly loved the Surface Duo!
มุมมอง 607ปีที่แล้ว
That's not to say I don't still love it, it just isn't a secret anymore. I think this is one of the greatest folio concepts seen so far, I think it deserved better press coverage, I think it deserved more favourable reviews, I think the earliest version were problematic but Microsoft addressed those bugs and it became a better phone, it deserved more time in the sunshine. Yeah, Microsoft got so...
We finally get Linux on this Classic Mac Pro 2,1
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
This should never have needed to be a multi-part series, but we've sure found some hurdles to overcome on this one! This is part 3 (of 3) in my Mac Pro 2,1 series as we try to get Linux on this one so that we can extend the life of this fantastic piece of kit. Part 1; was an introduction to the device and what we plan to do with it Part 2; a non-standard GPU prevented us from seeing the boot sc...
I'm still trying to get Linux installed on to this MacPro 2,1

This is part two in my Mac Pro 2,1 series as we try to get Linux on this so that we can extend the life of this fantastic piece of kit. They've aged well, like most Apple hardware, it's a good looking thing. The guts of the machine aren't much by todays standards, but back in the day, it was something special. Today it still has a lot to offer, especially to the casual computer user, there is h...
El Capitan on an iMac 7,1 in 2023, does it still work?
มุมมอง 549ปีที่แล้ว
We've pulled our, still very handsome, 2007 iMac 7,1 out for a little more attention. This time, we're going to install MacOS 10.11 (El Capitan). So this iMac has already featured on the channel, we installed Linux Mint and it worked pretty well, though it's a little less optimised than MacOS is on this piece of kit. Of course, optimisation means nothing if we can't get updates, so this is like...
Upgrading a Note10 plus 5g to Android 13
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video we're looking at yet more abandoned tech in the form of the Samsung Note 10 plus which is no longer receiving updates from Samsung. There is a bit of a story to this particular Note 10 though in that this was my device, I bought it second-hand and as I found out much later, the original owner had received this phone as part of a cell service package and had stopped paying for the ...
Another abandoned Apple Computer, the Mac Pro 2,1

This is part one in understanding what crippled the Mac Pro 2,1 and how we can find ways of continuing to get great value from these amazing pieces of equipment. Apple has abandoned this 2007 iMac (7,1), so can we still use it on the internet?
มุมมอง 84ปีที่แล้ว
We're going to give this, still very handsome, 2007 iMac 7,1 a new life by installing #LinuxMint. We'll start with a once-over, like what do we get from a 2007 iMac, what doesn't work well (hint, the internet...) and then we'll jump into Linux Mint on the same machine and check it out doing a little web browsing. Shout out to @LinusTechTips that is my TH-cam test video for both operating system...

This is a repost, I posted this on a personal channel back in 2020, but I've since lost access to that original material, so I'm uploading it again for the memories. This machine isn't really available anymore, the computer specs are a little dated, things move fast in computer time. But I would say that this machine has stood up very well and I would definitely recommend a Windows machine from...
And could you please try the APP numbers which is it work well on this version of macOS sonoma?
After installing macOS sonoma, do you need to use to opencore to install any drivers? It seems to the option and install post xxxxx need to be quick after install the macOS, is it bro?
I spent two days trying to see the EFI drive option. It turned out that I was using a hub. When I plugged the drive directly into the back of the mac mini (it may be port dependent), it worked like a charm, until . . . . A few days later, I upgraded my Office 365 (web version), sometime shortly thereafter, I got the "grey box" when I wanted to highlight (i.e. click) on something. As one of the features I use the most, if forced by to revert back to OS 10.15. That is a story in itself!
hi. Is suspend / hibernation on Linux a problem on this laptop? I have a modern Thinkpad (T14s) and suspend is a hit or miss. It is not as reliable as a Mac.
Can i do it in samsung note 10?
thanks for the tutorial. A question, can I use the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse during the procedure or could I have problems? thanks in advance
You can’t toggle the boot drive with Bluetooth keyboard during reboot.
After a stripdown, deep fan clean, re-application of thermal paste, I use mine as a 24/7 Proxmox host. Runs a TON of things: home automation, plex media server, torrents stack, minecraft, even an AirPlay server with powered speakers connected to the analog audio out. I've planted in the bookshelf standing "up" on a stand, with the screen ~140 degrees open. I got it for $35 and paid $5 for a second-hand DDR3 module giving it 12 GB RAM total. It's been a champ! :) Will add an SSD for backups in the near future.
i have a 2012 mac mini 2.3 i7 with ssd harddisk. Installed Sonoma 14.5 today. Works fine. opdatede from 14.4. Used OCLP as always and I have donated to the team because of their great work for all of us
I want to do it to for my office mac mini, same one! Are there any limitations that do not work ? like wifi? or bluetooth? thanks!!

Help! My wifi and bluetooth doesnt work
How would the process change if rather than a separate partition on the same HDD you use separate HDD's?
I have the same device but replaced the HDD with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB. So that should even be better. Oeps I see you replaced the HDD, good move. Now that OpenCore patcher 1.5.0 is working so well..... You made my day :-)
In 2011-13 I worked on remore Pacific atolls and islands, where there was no IT support. I used an x220 with 16gb of RAM, a duel boot SSD and MSATA, each booting two virtual images. It was the ultimate in reliability. I still have it, I still use it.
Hi I have a Mac mini late 2012 i7 16Gb and I tried the OCP multiple times the issue I am having is that the boot options do not come Up when rebooting. Tried million times before after the chime different keys…through the recovery and disk selector but nothing… any suggestion please? I am using a keyboard wireless with dongle but I can enter the recovery at boot but not select the boot from…help!
You need a old keyboard via cable. After installation you can use your Bluetooth keyboard.
Dude, I have ventura installed by opencore on my Mac Mini late 2012, the opencore on the PC is updated, how do I update it to Sonoma? Do I have to do the whole process again or can I simply have the update installed via the system since I have opencore installed on the system?
doesn’t work
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, the grub option just never shows up on boot.
I felt Sonoma was a bit laggy on my 2012 Mac Mini. Would you recommend Ventura instead? [i5/16/256]

I think your monitor needs desperately to be cleaned. Apart this, thanks for the demo.
what GPU Were you using in the Mac Pro 3,1?
You could have made this a great video if you slowed down! Plus, how did you get from download macos installer to the reboot screen? I was hoping for a step-by-step guide. This was too rushed
I tried updating my 16GB 1TB SSD Mac Mini 2012 (6.2) with Sonoma - it was so sluggish I went back to Catalina within a day. Basic OS functionality like dragging windows and opening menus took a big hit in speed. Not recommended.
Glad that we now need an M1 to accomplish tasks that could be done back in the 80s without lag...
you are gonna lose that finger ....you got to removed that ring around your finger

I have an x220 I updated the original BIOS and firmware for Intel me. I have 16gb 2x8gb DDR3 1600 RAM "I thought the maximum RAM supported was 8gb". I installed Devuan.
Awesome!
Do you know if this will work with an egpu and if so how do you get it to work?
I just installed Sonoma on a 2014 mini the other day, it worked great and even though it's a dual core i5 with 8GB of ram and a M.2 SSD I installed in it runs like a champ! The OCLP guys are saviors of Mac's going to landfills in this world. Considering Apple could care less after 5 years if your Mac is in a landfill or not since they'd rather just sell you a new Mac!
what are you talking about you get the newest OS after 5 years every time, actually more. literally all macs are used more than 10 years and then still sold
Lol literally got recommended this on my docked x220 running arch (btw)
Same
I have a stock Mac Pro 3,1 too... How is the speed of Monterey on this Mac Pro? Does it feel sluggish or zippy/fast as its last supported OS of High Sierra? I ask because I installed Monterey using OCLP on a stock iMac 2008 and it was so slow, basically unusable... then I clean installed Big Sur and it was also slow, but somewhat usable... definitely slow compared to the speed of High Sierra on both my Macs.
Ι run Ventura on a MacBookPro late 2008... Works fine for daily tasks and on the plus side i can also boot into Win11 23H2 and Linux MX... OCLP is a superb piece of software!
We miss the Windows phone just needed apps
I really liked the Windows Phone because it was doing it differently to the Android / Apple folks. Appreciate the Androind/Apple devs do their own thing, but there is no denying there are also a lot of similarities and if one stumbles into a good idea, the other usually has an implementation of it at some point down the road. The Windows Phone took the direction that 'maybe what the other guys are doing isn't the best, let's try something new' at least that's how I saw it. The problem, as you say, was a major discrepancy in the number of apps available for Windows phone compared to its peers. It is a shame that MS couldn't stick with it and/or bribe enough devs to stick with it just a little longer, the current phone space would be a far more vibrant space if we had 3 big operating system players imo.
Thank you very much. What video card you are using?
let me get back to you on that. I'm currently away working on 'my real job', when I get home I'll fire it up and report back.
I have a mac mini 2012 i5 16gb ram and ssd like the video. From my experience going through all the available version in oclp , Monterrey is the most equilibrated so far. Fast boot up and performance. Big Sur works pretty well too but too similar with Monterrey that is newer and more secure. I reccomend Monterrey so far
I think for me, even though I/we do use the MacMini a little more after Sonoma than we were before, we are still not working it very hard as there are other computers in the family that do more of the 'daily driver' things. For me, I have not noticed any drawbacks to using Sonoma on this but I appreciate your comments, perhaps I'll try to use it as a 'daily' for a week or so to see if I have a different opinion when it's actually my main device.
@@WhatTheFlash-cx6ox off course. Sonoma its beautiful and works amazing(incredible that a 2012 machine can handle a normal use) , but i noticed it a little bit laggy for example in things that has more gpu usage. Anyways all depends in the user needs , for browsing and office stuff its still amazing ! I hope see more of yours channel. See ya !
no browser is opening the asset
this is the worst! I added the link here, not sure if it will work, if not, I can upload latest version (at time of writing) to the Google drive if that will help. github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/releases/download/1.2.1/OpenCore-Patcher-GUI.app.zip
did you experience thermal throttling with this machine?
I didn't, but I think for me, even though I/we do use the MacMini a little more after Sonoma than we were before, we are still not working it very hard as there are other computers in the family that do more of the 'daily driver' things. I saw another comment and think I will try to use the MacMini with Sonoma as my 'daily driver' for a week or so when I get back home to see if I have a different opinion when it is a computer I need on a daily basis.
i need updgrade for my snapdragon galaxy note 10 plus, please anybody have tutorial
Me too
A superb little machine, even by modern standards.
completely agree
Yooooo! Check my reply to ur comment on my community post! I have a collab idea for ya, if ur keen!
the offer is still there!
With Sonoma, I no longer have streams of my sports channel DAZN, Sky Sport and Magenta Sport. Neither on my Mac Mini 2012 nor on younger, no longer supported Macs. Too bad, but so Sonoma makes no sense to me. Unless someone has help to turn off my problem. Greetings from Germany , Thomas .
Currently on travel for work, when I get home, I will try to use the MacMini as my main computer for a week or so, I think my amazement with how well Sonoma works (thanks to OCLP) needs to be balanced against how often I rely on that machine, I will report back once I've had chance to get home and get my working life replicated to the MacMini and that should give me a real idea of what issues I face.
First thing first: I totally agree the OCLP team has done a great job on this, donate if you can. I upgraded my iMac 12 (i7 3.xGHz, 256/2T fusion, 16GB memory) from High Sierra to Sonoma just a day or so ago, using release 1.2.1. Process was straight forward (I even used my hard drive instead of USB stick). My take at this point is I think Sonoma takes a lot more graphics power than some of these older systems can handle. For example, the much-raved full motion screen saver and wallpaper simply do not work on my machine. Simple video on TH-cam feels "labored" (fine on High Sierra). I think I am going to fall back to may be Big Sur and see how that goes.
…’donate if you can’t… honestly, who cannot afford $1-$3 (or their local currency equivalent)?. It’s not like the software authors are demanding $500, or a subscription at $50 monthly …. If every person who actually used OCLP would donate $2, and every person who used it in a commercial money-making income way would subscribe for $3/monthly, the results would be most favorable for the Mac Community.
Monterey is the sweet spot for MM2012 imo - i'm avoiding that iOS-like preferences pane for as long as possible excited for the new M4 2024 offering
MM2012 are perfect machines for casual users esp older folks
macbook pro with 8gb ram is it enough for a start?
Do you know the model of your MacBook Pro? Supported models are here: dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/MODELS.html#macbook-pro I think the main thing will be to make sure you have an SSD - it makes such a big difference. Of course depending on the age (model) of the MBP and which things can even be changed on that particular unit.
I uploaded this one as a backstop as I’m a bit distracted at the moment. I put it in schedule and the idea was if I had something else ready for this week, then I’d just cancel the schedule and upload something newer. Alas didn’t happen. So why the distraction? Well, excitingly, I am working on an early stage startup thing and like Schrödinger and his cat, until we have proof either way, the startup is both a roaring success and dismal failure, but working on the roaring success outcome, I need to throw some effort into that and see how it plays out.
I've got a 2tb external ssd running batocera, haven't tried it with the x220, might give it a go, thanks for the inspiration! 😊
2tb, I drool at the thought of how many games you might have.
3000 ish, plus in the process of adding a pretty big chunk of my steam library via flatpak app as well! 😮😮😮😮
