I have tried tor years to get my apprentices to learn the polarity of the spool and not waste time trying to wrap pipe. but they weren't inspired by convenience, or a smooth job, because they were more interested in a paycheck than plumbing a pump. $$$$ wasted in leaks and wasteage of tape.

theres two type of GI union in the Philippines, the cheap one has no round metal BRASS that will sealed the union, and since it is position in the suction part of the water system, it is way better to wrap it with TEFLON. cause hole just as small as the tip of the niddle, will fail the water pump to suck water.
use it outside the well using a barrel or bucket of water. see it it will prime where you can see whats going on. there's a plug to put water in to help close the air gap in the pipe. they won't pump a large air bubble. turn on the pump and pour water in the till hole which is probably on the top of the impeller chamber. when it catches prime you'll get a little wet putting the plug back in the hole. if it catches prime above ground in the bucket it is having trouble with too large of an air bubble in the suction pipe. this could be caused by a faulty check valve at the bottom of the suction pipe or an air leak in the suction pipe or the joints. if you are using a surface pump the water level in the well has to be higher than 20 feet. pumps not jet assisted are good only for very shallow water.... next step is either a jet pump or a submersible. subnersible pumps don't freeze in cold weather and don't need priming. they last a long time if the water doesn't have a lot of minerals in it to rust things up. mine still worked after twenty years. it seems you have this done by now, but Good Luck on you adventure into hydraulics.
