    Rumor has it von Bardeleben asked the arbiter if he could play Ki8 and was so distraught at the answer to the contrary that he ragequit and slipped into a deep depression for the rest of the tournament.

    It's a misconception that Von Bardeleben walked away because he was losing. In fact, at the time there was a tradition of loudly applauding when someone won a game during this tournament. Von Bardeleben found this to be distracting to the players and walked out instead of resigning as a protest. Edward Winter wrote a nice article about it.
