Ahhh man, I was at this one! I was backpacking at the time and arrived in Oz in April 95: one of my best 'claim to fames' was that I was at the last GP in Adelaide and the first GP in Melbourne (actually ended up at 2 GP's in Melbourne, as the company I got a job with got my visa extended, so stayed in Oz for 20 months!). Damn, this is mad.... I cannot believe this was nearly 29 years ago...... where the hell did it all go???? (Oh, and I'm now 52, just in case anyone was wondering!! 🤣🤣)
Clive was incredible, funny, witty, observant, intelligent and more than that he was just wonderful with his use of the English language and engaging the audience
I have never seen this documentary, but it's really fascinating, I don't know if it was ever shown on itv in the nineties , but it's really good I think the late 70s to the early 2000s was F1s golden era .
I remember this from the day. Clive James was an amazing broadcaster, as this excellent documentary presented the world of 1990s F1. How young everyone looked!
It was a lot more work to produce a video of this quality back in the days before... well, back in the day. A masterpiece by a master craftsman featuring master craftsmen driving masterfully crafted, state of the art machines.
OMG the memories, I started working in F1 in 1996. It's not an easy job. This Clive James video gave me the confidence to push on .... for another 17 years in the Sport. RIP Clive James, brilliant human being. Thank you
The 90's were the "golden years" of F1 imho. (and I'm very grateful that I was there to witness them) Great to see and hear Mr. Clive James in his optimal form as always!
What a treat, great video. Clive James always got it right between being witty and taking the pee. 95 was an interesting year, Barrichelo and Irvine hated each other, the other memory of this year was Murray Walker forever going on and on about how good Schumacher was!
A few days after this race at 8 am I drunkenly walked into a large fella on an Adelaide footpath at low speed. Clive laughed it off and helped me on my way. Lovely bloke. Could mix equally wit the top end of town and even me. Thanks Clive.
If they’d held Grands Prix for journalism, Clive James would’ve had the number 1 on his typewriter season after season. How lucky we were to have witnessed his genius. Great upload, Fifth Gear.
What a classic! Just getting damon and michael together next to eachother at the high of their rivalry! And then asking "damon what do you think of michael?"😅

Melbourne is so dull. Street circuits are always amazing and it's such a shame it got abandoned.
Clive James, one of the greatest Australians of all time possibly. He did the reviews for 82, 84 and 86, all reccommended. Also did a wide variety of telly programmes for god knows how many years.
And don't forget the excellent one he did with Stirling Moss, where he had to learn how to drive a car, and then race it in Australia. It's here on YT.
James was a first class writer, journalist, comedian and entertainer. He could make interesting even something as dull as cars driving around fast. Thanks for the upload.
I was there standing on the corner of the corner of Flinders and Hut Street photographing with the Italian F1 photographer Rossi. It was sickening when we heard that Mika Häkkinen had crashed and was struggling for life.
Hakkinen was dying before intensive care specialists at the scene did a tracheotomy to allow him to breathe, as the base of his skull had been crushed; at the hospital, Mika received a new Australian medical technique that kept oxygen flowing to the brain after a significant head injury; this allowed him to fully recuperate.
Yes they called it a brain pump and when they pumped the gas through his brain it allowed his brain cells to recuperate and eventually begin talking to each other and when they did the first thing the brain cells realised as a collective (or brain if you will) was that brain pumps are a good idea and if you don't use one at the appropriate moment you could wind up brainless. Now Hakkinen and his brain live a full life together and the only sign anything medical was ever done are two small in/out ports on his skull, some pipework, and a brain inspector that follows him around everywhere.
@@Rallyman2222 Wrong; there were 2 local doctors onsite who saved his life. The first was Jerome Cockings, an intensive care specialist. The second was Stephen Lewis, a neurosurgeon.
You’ll really miss this era of f1. Its genuine racing, hype is organic, everyone is pushing for advancement of technology and you can really say its the pinnacle of motorsport. Nowadays its all funfare, too much gimmick and the off track happenings is more exciting than the racing itself 😂😂😂
It's funny, after spending 10 minutes saying how Hill and The Michael would come together, it was The Michael and Alesi who did instead as Hill walked off with the win
This era is what got me into F1 and I used to regularly attend the Adelaide Grand Prix, racing today isn’t as entertaining as it was back then I for and the sport has suffered. I might be biased but the Adelaide track was also one of the best in the world and had everything to test the car and driver and gave for great racing where as if you compare it to Melbourne which took this race it’s dull and boring
Great documentary. Also another in a litany of examples British journalists completely absolving British drivers of accidents they cause. Ah, a tradition unlike any other.
An American who can’t even understand the age old dynamics of Aussies and Brits who would never apologise for each other. A tradition unlike any other.
@@Wizerud4:23, "So far he's come into high-speed contact with Damon three times this season, and he hasn't apologized once." Sure sounds very apologetic toward Brits there, like he's attributing blame to Schumacher for Hill's skill issues. Next I'll be told Hill isn't British either. 🤣
James was chiding Schumacher for not apologising for his on track collisions in 1995? Uh, two of those collisions were clearly Hill's fault - Silverstone and Monza.
Watching these beautiful cars and glamor of Formula One in the 90s, you really do see how utterly shit💩 the sport has now become. Wow what a dreadful fall
THE former fiancee of David Coulthard last night spoke of her split with the Scottish Formula One driver. Speaking from the Monaco apartment she shared with Coulthard, Andrea Murray, 23, said: ''I do know that David is with someone else now.'' Miss Murray, who was speaking as her former fiance failed to finish at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, said: ''I am going to throw myself into my photographic career, which is starting to take off.'' She declined to say why she was in the Monaco apartment, when she had been reported to be in Britain with friends. It will only fuel rumours which abound on the Formula One circuit that her split from the 26-year-old Scot, was far from amicable.
Clive James' wit was very special. That he applied it to F1 was a gift for us
Brilliant Clive James, just the right combination of genuine interest, humour and cynicism that we all used to love him for.
Yeah, Clive James was brilliant! Glad to have him as part of my childhood
