My father worked on the Royal Barge Nore from 1952-1956 range and was at the controls when Marshal Tito was taken out on the Nore. he's told us of taking Krushchev, Bulganian, the Portuguese president as well as Tito. It is so cool to see historical footage that my Dad has played a part - as well as just how close proximity he was with historical and political figures of the day. He is now 95 (in 2024), living in British Columbia, and when I talked to him today about these experiences, he seemed all very unfazed by it, like it was just another day at the office at what he called the best job he ever had.

@@yugoslaviaist Thank you for the kind words. Yes he has had a very interesting life. He loved working on the Nore and said it was the best job he ever had. He seems unfazed by seeing these historical greats up close - he has said Tito (and other leaders) would be in the cabin with him during the journey (they boarded through there as well) but we cannot seem to get any answers if he spoke or interacted with him at all, seems he didn't as he had a job to do.

My dad's uncle was the main guard of the Marshall Tito, later he was main advisor of Stane Dolanc, the president of Yugoslavia, after Tito died. Also, at his time, Tito gave him a personal golden watch as a present, which is in our family heritage today.

You're right in saying that Stalin tried on numerous occasions to take Tito out in that five year period. If you don't stop, I will have to send my own agent to you, and I won't have to send another one."

Prilikom posjete Americi je rekao da je Srpsko pitanje rešeno jer Srba više nema kao faktora u SFRJ. Nacisti Stane Dolanc i Hrvatsko tadašnje rukovodstvo su mu bili saradnici. borjan k Tito has an understandably mixed legacy. He committed genocide against the Danubian Germans, but he otherwise kept ethnic tensions underground and allowed a Pan-South-Slavic identity that transcended ethnic differences to emerge. He repressed political opponents and didn't allow elections, and yet he followed the mould of Trotsky and Luxemburg and gave workers control over co-operatives, allowing a free market to exist in the absence of either a Stalinistic bureaucratic class or a capitalist class. He opposed the totalitarianism of Stalin and Mao, though he was no liberal himself as an autocrat. He was an effective leader, and Yugoslavia grew under market socialism, participation in the Non-Aligned movement, and trade relations with the west, but after his death everything fell apart within a generation.
Perhaps, in a different timeline, one where he became the decentralized, anti-bureaucrat market-communist premier of a surviving Austria-Hungary or reformed, Franz Ferdinand style United States of Greater Austria, with a federal structure and almost complete local autonomy for different nations beneath the Emperor and pan-ethnic parliament, or the premier of a surviving Kingdom of Yugoslavia, his economic plans could have come into play without the accompanying ethnic-cleansing of Germans and repression of political opponents, and perhaps his legacy would not have collapsed after his death.
There was great good and great evil in Tito; neither cancels out the other.

It should be added that members of the Yugoslav army were in exile, Serbian Chetniks were trying to assassinate the communist leader and Croat Josip Broz on that occasion in London. Due to that, the security measures were strengthened and Broz was driving in an armored car. Josip Broz is responsible for the civil war in Yugoslavia and for the thousands of people killed during the communist terror in Yugoslavia.
