- Fall is coming to an end, so that means it's time to get our garden prepped and ready for the spring! We harvest the last of our tomatoes and carrots, seaweed for the garden, grouse for dinner, and berries for dessert. Fall harvest at its best!

Only a little advice, there is a really great channel out in Alaska, and they amended their soil with spent grain. So if you are near to a brewery maybe they will sell a trailor full.Should be cheaper than compost

That’s really awesome your chickens are already laying, I got 18 hens that were hatched in may, they are huge and I’ve been giving them lots of greens from the woods, they have yet to lay.. I’m expecting them soon, it was hard letting all my old flock go to start new it will pay off soon, you Guys are doing great, garden is looking great too God Bless You two, your friend in Willow 🙏🏻❤️🇺🇸💪
We couldn't believe it! The first few eggs in only 4.5 months. The last five flocks we raised in the past never had lay eggs consistently in the first year. Right now out of 13 hens, we get 9 eggs per day consistently. It is good to hear your flock has grown strong! What breed is your new flock? Wishing you and your mom well! 🙏

So beautiful and serene. I love everything that you are doing and for the short time that you have been there you have accomplished so much. All of the additives that you are adding to your gardens should be tilled into the soil even if it is using a pitchfork. It helps with the growth by getting it down to the roots of where your plants will grow. Love your videos and I am always looking forward to the next one.
Thank you! In the past, we have always tilled our gardens on the east coast but we did not have raised mounds. We planned to use a power cultivator on the rows in spring, hopefully, that is sufficient? The ground is unfortunately frozen here now and it is no longer possible to tend the soil until spring.

Great tips!! Also great looking carrots. I leave those in the ground and just dig when needed throughout garden into to winter.

Enjoy your videos. I'd recommend next time that you guys find a babysitter for your two kids; one likes to ride along, the other just wants to play while the parents try to gather seaweed. My poor attempt to pass a smile your way!
Haha! The little one was happy to be with us, and the big one did not want to leave the beach! He was so upset when it came time to go. He did not want the fun to end. 😀

Grouse are the Prime Rib of the sky. I find my favorite method of preparing is grilled with some mushrooms and onion (kinds like shishkabobs). Yummy!

Try the "Music" Garlic from Keene Garlic Farm. Also check out their learning section. We use their method of soaking the cloves before planting. Our garlic grows much better than planting without the soak.

There was a lot of grouse in the mountains where I grew up but they slowly dwindled to a few. I feel fortunate when I spot one. Never ate one. Too much venison to be had. 😊
Ahh, we miss the abundance of deer since moving to alaska. Venison was our primary protein for many years. The grouse population is so excellent in this area! It is very common to see quite a few per day. They must have good hatch rates here.

Since you have a tractor, I think it has a backhoe on it, you could dig a long trench about 8 feet deep and bury an 8 or 10 inch piece of flexible black 0plastic tubing that you bring the end of up into the greenhouse. Take advantage of ground warmth by blowing air through it to keep the greenhouse warm during the winter and see if you can grow vegetables like this. I saw this done in a Nebraska TH-cam video where they grew tropical fruit in the middle of winter. I wish you well and I enjoy your TH-cam videos.

When you got to the carrots and lettuce it reminded me to tell you I tried your mustard dressing, it's great on salad and meats. It is loaded with fat so it's great for a keto diet. I love it, thank you.

Try a slow braise or a simmer in a gravy for the spruce hen. No fat in those birds. Another great video. I miss Alaska just not the weather.

I heard you should cover your garden dirt, once you amend it, because Mother Nature wants the ground dirt to be covered, to prevent it from washing away, so if you don't cover it, even with old newspaper, or some of the old clothes you found, or even cardboard, weeds will greet you in the Spring. The good thing about using newspaper or cardboard is it composts and adds to your garden!
Thanks for sharing. I wonder if snow cover is sufficient because our garden was completely covered in snow almost immediately after this video and will still be covered in snow for another 2 months from now.

Too bad you didn't have a bunch of maple trees out there that's what I use maple leaves I use maple leaves all over my garlic and all my potato beds because I leave my potatoes in the ground all year round but yeah it was free and worked really good

We thought about using fireweed for the mulch but not sure how that would work. The only trees here that have significant leaves are a few aspen. But they are few and far. Maybe we should plant a field of native grass and cut it for mulch.

SUGGESTION Idk if Alaska has this, but in the midwest, many counties, cities or States (you just have to look it up) have free or minimal cost soil testing. I use it for reseeding and starting new lawns, but diy farmers and others use it for getting their soil right for particular crops. Fortunately, mine`s in the county and i drop the samples off and they mail amd email me the results. The results are really interesting. You pick out a plot and take several samples from that plot or particular area, mix them together, take a small bit out of that, put it in the supplied bag, then send it in.
They offer 2 free test a year but cost above that if you have more. If may not be practical for u if u have to drive far but if you have to go to a major city or near a agricultural university u could drop samples off. They also have mail in service.

Is this a thing? I think we need a permit and a wet suit to harvest live kelp but that would be interesting to try some pickled kelp! 😅
@northtoalaska2022 yes, when my daughter lived in Gustavus they made pickles and salsa from kelp and it was delicious. I don't know the process, you might ask around, some local probably knows how it's done.

Yea! We have an old black tarp that has outlived its usefulness, I should throw it on top right before it snows a lot so it won't blow away.
Liking the preparation of your garden. I noticed you are walking in the beds. This will compact the soil. I know, duh statement. We made our beds narrow enough to walk between them. Easier to tend and no till. 😊

Small tomatoes won't ripen . You could make green tomato chutney or jam .
Most of the small ones were grape tomatoes. They all were ripe in a short time inside. The growing season was extra short this past season. We had rain and clouds most of the summer. Maybe one day we will have a cost-effective way to heat greenhouses for a slightly longer season.

We have never boiled sea salt water, that would be interesting to try! We found today while attempting to dig in our dirt the frost is 3 to 4 inches deep already. It's hard to believe because it has hit 40 degrees during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down 20° winter is almost here 🥶
I saw Live Free or Die (TV series) boil the water down for salt to preserve a wild boar they had shot. they had no refrigeration to keep it. I guess that might be how they do the ham we buy (maybe why some are very salty) They were a different kind of a couple - so he stripped down & went further into the ocean to collet the water (30') -then boiled it over a fire.@@northtoalaska2022

We did give it a try but all three eggplants died from the abnormally cool summer weather. Next year they will go in the greenhouse!

Ahh, we visited Seward for the first time this summer! Hiked to exit Glacier, so beautiful! Fishing in Resurrection Bay must be so surreal floating in between all the mountains. Homer is our nearest town!

That dirt was way to dry for tomatoes the roots were trying to get to water.
Straw is not so great for garden. Hard to say what’s been sprayed on it and seeds can be a problem. Better to use the leaves from around your property for bed covering.
The straw was certified seed-free. Unfortunately, leaves are something we are lacking in this area. We do have an abundance of fireweed and often wonder if using it to insulate the garlic is a good idea. The fireweed would introduce seeds to the soil, but it is free if it works.

I live in Soldotna. I hope you checked your regs closely. Harvesting seaweed is illegal on most shorelines of cook inlet. Minus seldovia and 2 places near Anchorage. Just a heads up, incase.
Thanks for the heads up, but we contacted Dnr prior to harvesting the seaweed. It is legal for personal use. It's not legal for commercial use. Obviously, make your own phone calls and act accordingly. Your area may be different.

O wow big change! We wish you good luck with your farming endeavor! In case your plans change and you stay, there are a lot of regulations for collecting kelp but collecting dead kelp from the high tide line like we did for personal use is perfectly fine but it does have specific dates you are allowed to collect it. To collect live kelp, I understand there is a permit involved and certain areas are restricted. I did not take your comment as disrespectful, although it is tough to differentiate sometimes in text what someone's intent is. We give everyone the benefit of the doubt. You may be shocked to hear this but we have been severely harassed by a few Alaskans in the comments section on other videos and in comments like that it is easy to see I'll intent because they are cussing at us or making threats... I would not be surprised if someone did try to get us into trouble if we were to be in the wrong after some of the nasty things that have been sent to us 😂 it has been interesting being subject to public scrutiny on TH-cam, to say the least. 😄 chicken whisperer! We are going to try heating the greenhouse next season with a diesel heater. Unfortunately, we felt it was a lost cause this year. Our plants were stunted and heading to seed because of the abnormally cool and rainy summer here. Most of the pepper plants died early on in the greenhouse. We are excited to see the effects of the seaweed!
