Hoye-Crest, the rooftop of Maryland is located near the bottom far west corner of the state in Garrett County. You may wonder how Maryland’s highpoint ended up here, a subpeak on Backbone Mountain. The answer to that dates back almost four hundred years ago with Maryland's original creation as an English colony, how the Potomac River splits into two branches, and the determination that the northern branch was the "true" one. Needless to say it is a fascinating story.
These days Garrett County is home to the wild places of Maryland, a treasure trove of natural wonders, including not only the highpoint, but also the state’s highest waterfall, the last remaining old growth forest in the Maryland, and a swamp preserve unlike anything else in the region. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!
    Hosted by Skye Marthaler
Extended Cuts: As I've become more competent and ambitious as both a filmmaker and storyteller I've wanted to go back to some of the earlier episodes in the series and punch them up for a more thorough presentation. The original version of Hoye-Crest can be found here: • Old Version - Highpoin...

Another top-notch video! The quality and work he puts in are evident. This guy deserves a show on PBS w/ a Ken Burns-sized budget! Keep up the good work. 👍

This is genuinely some very high quality content. Me and a friend went on an 8 hour day roadtrip from Pittsburgh, visiting Spruce Knob, and Hoye Crest. We sure did miss a lot of stuff in those areas that deserve attention though. Would be worth going back there some time. We also did Mt Davis the day before so that is 3 state high points in 2 days.

Thank you! There is a lot of history and sites packed in that little area.

I just found these videos, and I’m hooked! Excellent stuff! It’s like combining my highpointing hobby with the awesome “How the States Got Their Shapes” book/series.

Thanks! Both "How the States Got Their Shapes" have been invaluable references over the past few years particularly for the states with highpoints right on the border. Cheers!

That was great, Skye! Thank you for another lovely video and great history lesson. I always loved to stare at world maps in class at school and always wondered how Maryland got it's somewhat odd shape. Thanks to you and your great storytelling, I now know. Although I won't get the oppurtunity to hike these beautiful places, I still feel like having been there after watching one of your videos. I applaud thee, my dear sir! Well done!

Hiked this one this summer with the family. Definitely harder than I expected. Love the border crossing along the way though.

It's easy to underestimate this one. On paper it seems like it should so simple but you start grabbing elevation almost immediately.

Lots of good information as always. This one goes under the tougher then expected highpoint with Connecticut. I need to go back and visit this as the day I went it was raining and I didn't have a view and got back to my car miserable and soaking wet. Plus I'd like to shoot a video too for my channel. Always enjoy your work Skye.

The first time I ever hiked up Hoye-Crest was in the winter through the snow. It kicked my butt. As for the views they used to be a bit better but things are starting to get a bit overgrown at the top.

Steep little bugger but was able to do 4 highpoints in a single day given their proximity. Bringing my total to 30 plus DC. Thanks for all your great information Scott ;)

I'm at 23 highpoints plus DC. I'll hit the mathematical halfway point this summer.

Good content. When you look at high points, "highest point" can be debated. Sure this is the highest elevation in Maryland. But other places can be looked at too and be unofficial "high points". Tallest (prominence) and highest mountain are different. Hoye-Crest is the highest but probably not the tallest in Maryland as far as difference of elevation over the surrounding area. That area is already pretty high elevation at the bottom of Hoye-Crest.
Also, you could look at the highest mountain "summit" in Maryland. Hoye-Crest is not the "summit" of Backbone Mountain so it would be a different mountain.
Lastly, you could look at the Highest Mountain completely in one state. Backbone Mountain goes into West Virginia for example.
Oh and I guess theres the isolation measurement. You could look at the highest point with the most isolation. I would imagine this would be Sugerloaf Mountain for Maryland.
And the highest point in each state you can drive to or with a short walk from the parking lot would be a interesting topic.
Just a suggestion for more videos for each state after you hit every standard high point 😊
