why test tube is slanted when adding H2S04

Sulfuric acid is added slowly along the side of the test tube so that the sulfuric acid forms a layer just below the aqueous solution of nitrate which is already present in the test tube ,and the purple ring will be produced at the junction of the aqueous phase
