I first saw Streep live on stage in 1977, a Broadway revival of Bercht/Weill’s Happy End. She had 10 songs, six of them the big ones for which the musical is best known. She stopped the show with every one. She was bound to have a storied career, though I couldn’t have guessed it would be so remarkable. It has always surprised me she did so little singing on film.

I never realized the diverse acting career that she had but every time back in the 80s I would go into a video store to pick out a movie. I always picked out movies and then saw she was the star.
