    Great point, guys! Totally agree 💯
    I haven't really noticed that much myself because I bought a lot of Sandtroopers back when they first came out. I haven't been convinced to get any more troops because I already had plenty. I do have the Target Exclusive Garbage Shoot Luke Stormtrooper because he's extra shiny and I wanted the "wet hair" Luke. Luke's my favorite character, so I pick up almost every Luke, but that's the first thing I thought about Luke when I got it, that it looks like poop!! Same with Rex. Lol

    Couldn’t agree more guys. The old methods of weathering just looked better. I especially think army building is hurt when every figure has the exact same wear pattern. There’s not the natural variations that hand weathering gives. Thanks and keep up the good work.

So glad they didn't put any on the 'Appo' trooper, I bought 3 and want them all to look different. I understand why they do it this way, it's to make sure all the figures come out the same, like with the hand painting you could have one figure that has great paint apps and another of the same figure that could end up with crappy paint apps, and when they were doing the plastic-free packaging you couldn't see if the figure had good or bad paint apps.

    I'm wondering, I've got the clean R5-D4 and I'm guessing the R5-D4 with pit droids will have weathering to make him different from the standard release. I hope Hasbro does a better weathering on him.
    I definitely want them to go back to non digital painting for weathering on the figures and hit the back side of them as well.

    The problem is, if Hasbro doesn't use the ink-jet printer to apply the "weathering", their only other option is to utilize a warehouse full of underpaid Chinese workers to apply it by hand (the infamous "paint apps") which will give you a much better result, but at a much higher per-unit cost. I think a possible middle-ground would be to print the weathering using more than one color, which would allow them to anti-alias the "dirt" somewhat and so it blends into the underlying color. But I agree completely--the one-color weathering just doesn't work.

    It's me. I'm the one who prefers 💩troops.
    I don't think the digital dot matrix painting is going away; this is likely a cost saving measure but perhaps they could improve it. The appearance doesn't bother me, and the remnant trooper is in fact one of my favorite troopers; not necessarily because of how good it does or doesn't look but S1 of the Mandalorian is the reason I collect toys today and I love the scene where the remnant troopers and Mando were fighting.
    My mentality towards collecting is not; "oh man, grab a magnifier and look at those paint apps, I can see little dots". it's, "oh man, I have the representation of this awesome character on my shelf". So I'm willing to overlook minor issues like a slightly less than real-looking paint app.. or a figure that's an inch to short.. ok maybe not that last one.. but regardless I don't really notice the paint issues when I'm standing 2-3 feet away looking at my shelf -- but I can see where some people would have an issue. Pick your battles, I say. Character height/likeness is much more important than deco apps; in my humble opinion.

    • @OutOfTheBasement
      @OutOfTheBasement  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The dots aren't deal-breakers. This is simply a video expressing where we could see improvements. It's not like I'm gonna stop collecting these or anything. We cover all sorts of topics and sometimes that includes areas that we're not big fans of. I don't expect the dot matrix painting to go away, just a random topic we thought of. -Justin

    On some like Miggs (in Imperial disguise) it does look pretty bad. Partly that's because the grime on his feet and legs is a different colour to that on his chest. Other figures I don't look as bad. I mean when they're on the shelf they look ok.
    I do agree that the painted not printed look is best. The slight variations are great.
    Oh and I love me a removable helmet when done right. Caps and hats too. Cad Bane is a good un. He can hold his hat in his hand or wear it at a jaunty angle. Now they're giving us clones with removable bucket. C'mon Hasbro do the same with the Stormies. Who's with me? 😀

    Personally i prefer a clean figure because i do the weathering myself, but if a figure is gonna be weathered, i think with some revision, digital weathering can look better than the older style of weathering. I think for characters in armor like stormtroopers and clones the digital works better, but for characters like baylan with natural materials it doesnt work as well I know alot of people love the rex figure, but on my copy because of the way he was weathered, his chest and lower body were basically stained yellow while his legs and arms were still primarily white. Ideally what id like to see would be army builders having some variant weathering patterns that can get printed on, and named characters like rex or cody would only need the specific weathering pattern.

    Agree that paint apps have declined significantly in the line. As much as engineering and articulation have improved, paint apps have declined. I think it’s labor costs in Asia where these things are painted that is driving a lot of it. Hand painting is driving up the toy companies manufacturing budgets per figure and reducing their profit margin. So they are looking at different ways to paint figs for less cost. Spector creative had a really good video awhile back about how paint apps have changed across mass produced figures in the last few years.
    It’s not surprising that a tiny figure like wicket got nicer paint on it. They could do that with that figure and still hit the overall budget per figure since it is so small and used less plastic, had fewer joints, etc. Krsaantaan came with a higher price point to get that paint.
    I actually really like the remnant trooper. I think the combo of what you guys call the toasted marshmallow effect together with all the flaked paint effect on that particular figure is pretty effective. But overall, I do agree the older hand painted weathering was much better.
    The question is, would you want to pay more to get that quality of paint? I personally would. I have been saying for awhile that I would like to see the black series jump up to a 35-40 per figure price point so we can get back to better paint apps and piece count and less unpainted plastic in a line that was conceived as “the ultimate version” of action figure for these characters. Sign me up.

    • @OutOfTheBasement
      @OutOfTheBasement  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Would the community as a whole be okay with the $35-$40 price point though? You gotta remember it's the Black Series community. I would gladly pay it, but I’m likely in the minority. I also don’t really collect any other lines, so My toy budget is completely dedicated to black series, so that certainly drives my perspective. Star Wars has always been special to me and I will gladly pay for the line to be top tier

    I liked my Mando jizzz fig ohh that was snow no lol I didn't know that was snow I thought he had been demoted from bounty hunter to jack booth cleaner naww this is lol but I bought it cause the onley actual Mando figure I've seen on the shelf I had a arms that onley up and downed the waist swiveled the legs don't move at all figure iam gen-×/D-x I was litterley about to risk sacrificing a Boba fett fig and repainting it my self just to have a Mando t.v. figure I've been touching up eye brows abd little paint flaws for years but never a hole figure not since the led figures / miniatures me and fellow needs painted back in the real D&D days before any wizard of the coast bullshit back when it was a now extinct company called t.s.r any way ive been tempted too exacto off the snow bull shit and get out the touch up paint and repair any thing I might have a discrepancy with but ide rather just buy one done right and I've seen all over the utube this new Mando with a cloth cape and now hasbro executive jizz allover his outfit but living in action figure hell indep. Missouri I doubt I'll ever see that one on the shelf it will be time too over pay so.e one with plastic money to go get one on the internet or to wait it out for its hundredth reboxing or tell the put more corporate jizz on it now thats a lol moment

    Hasbro has those Q&A sessions with fan sites from time to time. I know they are all pre-planned with easy softball questions with no real answers, but maybe someday this subject will come up and someone will ask the SW Team what actually happened to the paint process. And do they even care. I say this all the time I’ve become a parakeet, but every time Hasbro takes one step forward, they also seem to take two steps back. Just once I’d like to see them achieve an advancement without it sacrificing two other features. Paint wash, weathering, weapons detail, and even basic things like accurate colors (cough cough orange lightsabers cough cough) have all taken a beating the past couple years. Why?

      My guess would be budget. Hasbro is tanking pretty hard as a whole. It's probably a cheaper process. -Justin
