Split homes are a chore. I am the only practicing pagan witch (former christian) in my home.
My teenage children are curious and ask questions but they do not participate. The oldest has more of an atheist mindset and my youngest is christian. My christian husband was NOT happy with my slow conversion over the years but he's become more tolerant and doesn't mess with my altar anymore.

Someone asked for Heathen content for kids. It made me think. I don't know of any specific Ásatrú books for kids, but I personally grew up with books with the various Norse myths illustrated, and retold so children could understand them. Those sorta things are really great for younger children.
Mind you, I'm Norwegian, so I dunno if things work differently here in Scandinavia. We also learned about the gods in school.

conan is also a figure within irish mythology. Conán mac Morna, also known as Conán Maol ("the bald"), is a member of the fianna and an ally of Fionn mac Cumhail in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology. He is usually portrayed as a troublemaker and a comic figure, fat, greedy and blustering, although he is loyal to Fionn and never runs from a fight. Crom Cruach was a pagan god of pre-Christian Ireland. According to Christian writers, he was propitiated with human sacrifice and his worship was ended by Saint Patrick. He is also referred to as Crom Cróich, Cenn Cruach/Cróich and Cenncroithi. He is related to the later mythological and folkloric figure Crom Dubh. The references in the dinsenchas ("place-lore") poem in the 12th century to sacrifice in exchange for milk and grain suggest that Crom had a function as fertility god. The description of his image as a gold figure surrounded by twelve stone or bronze figures has been interpreted as representing the sun surrounded by the signs of the zodiac, which would make him a solar deity. conan and crom have historical origins apart from robert e. howard's fiction.

Talking about a group that went a different way than intended, there's a local kindred where I live, that was originally inclusive, but most of the membership was not well educated in the ways of Norse polytheism. When the original gothi passed away, there was a new one selected after being selected he turned the kindred into a folkish group. The gothi is an AFA member, and pushes for all members to become AFA members. It's sad because that kindred is the only one I'm aware of in my area.

Having not yet been able to read through the edas and sagas where the myths come from, and knowing only Neil Gaiman's retellings, I've got two general lines of inquiry. First, how is it that Ragnarok is a Christian addition? Like in the story of the binding of Loki, isn't he supposed to be bound until ragnarok? And secondly, do you have any tips and tricks for reading between the christian lines so to speak when reading the source texts to see the original thoughts?

I would love to have something to believe in and Paganism would probably be the closest thing to that. Paganism doesn’t offend anyone. The beliefs are what I would regard as rather pure.
I’m just looking for the one thing that allows me, personally, to legitimize lending belief to it. If you don’t have anything legitimate to point to that’s fine. But if you do have something legitimate that can be evidenced empirically I would truly appreciate it.
Just show something to support it scientifically....

Understood but where is the evidence to drive that action? There’s a difference between leaping with your eyes open and just walking blindfolded. I would prefer to see the map first...If these claims are legitimate there should be some type of empirical evidence out there to support them.
Just something...just a crumb of evidence.
How does this claim differentiate itself from all the other claims out there? What is this the correct answer and what about this proves the others wrong? They all can’t be correct because they contradict each other. Just please point to something that can be evidenced. I can put faith in anything but a faith untested is no faith at all if it can’t be substantiated.

@@johnhonebein6851 Some things aren’t about correctness or evidence or material or being wrong. You can assign legitimacy to your heathenry through rituals, offerings, prayer etc and find value in it without empirical proof. That is what I mean by leap of faith, because as much as you can research and reconstruct paganism historically with a level of rationality and scientific thinking, you need to greet the unknown and explore the ethereal at some point too.

    • @johnhonebein6851
      @johnhonebein6851 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Logan Wolf well, you’re presupposing the existence of a god there, instead of saying you don’t necessarily know where things came from. It just furthers the argument without providing any evidence at all. If anyone were able to provide that evidence in short term they would but up for consideration for several Nobel Prizes. You’re leading with an answer instead of just saying I don’t know.
It’s like just saying I’m tired of asking the questions because I’ve settled for answers that can’t be legitimized.
I gotta say, this is the best place to have this conversation in a open public forum. If there’s legitimacy behind your beliefs it should be really easy to counter any questions I may have raised. It would only bring you a stronger following.
Or you could just silence them if you don’t have anything legitimate to bring to the conversation otherwise.
I do appreciate the respectful approach to this conversation. And that’s sincere.

No, the link is in the bio I think. You will be put in a seperate chat where you'll talk with the people in the server. If you talk often it doesn't take a lot of time.

I'm sorry Ocean, but I have to ask.... it's this older man being political, without really admitting he's being political? Because he's speaking openly about going against "alt right" and things he thinks "mostly right" go against. I decry racism, I am inclusive, and I'm also a conservative heathen... So in a way, I'm asking would a conservative heathen not be accepted by this man?? 🤔 I will respectfully disagree that his folk are not all citizens, he's being more of a world guru of sorts, instead of Góði to a people and community. Like I said, I'm not trying to be disrespectful, just inquisitive and understand more of his/ your ideas of heathenry.

I dont know how he runs his community with respect to that. But in my community what matters with respect to politics is the inclusivity part. That results in the community broadly leaning to the left in politics. I’m not out here banning conservatives for fiscal policy or whatever. But hey, if you want to start a heathen org that is broadly conservative and inclusive, I’d love to see that exist, but I havent seen it yet myself.

@@OceanKeltoi thanks for the answer, I guess I can understand what you mean, knowing other conservatives... yeah, I like the guy and everything that was discussed was respectful and interesting. Is it overreaching on my part, perhaps to think of heathenry as a simple conservative based system, family, community, preserving/respecting and living with the natural world? Along with dealing with those that break the Frith or disrespect the Garth, all seems pretty middle-road politically... maybe there's hope for us to come together closer within heathenry and accept each other more respectfully, I'll drink to that! Thank you for all you do, your work, and the help you've brought to all our heathen communities.

@@dseelenmagie8811 so there’s nothing that you said that I disagree with necessarily except that I dont find those values to be inherently conservative. I’m a bit left of center and hold those same values. What I find frustrating about conservatism is that its often attacking those concepts if they are formed on inclusive grounds. Often I find with conservatism its not family and community they value, but their image of what a family and community should look like regardless of who is seeking out family and community. Its been a frustrating dynamic and i hope conservatives broadly figure this out and address the problem.

@@OceanKeltoi I grew up on a farm in Texas, so living with the animals/land is inherent to me, but I understand we do all share these same values. I've watched some "Christians" be more concerned with being "seen as Christian" much more than living a "Christian life"...its similar to your argument of the "right" shaping what family and community to some "looks like" rather than focusing on family/community. I hope to make a difference in my community and Folk, to forward the inclusive understanding of heathenry as we grow. Thanks again Ocean... you are a source of knowledge and inspiration.

Only Folkist's and AFA Nazis promote the "white's only" bs. Most Norse pagan communities, and pagan communities in general, are open to everyone. Just don't be a jerk to others and you will be fine.
