    I had a school trip to Japan. In one of the hotels I stayed in they served curry for breakfast everyday.

    I am an Indian and honestly, the craving I get for the Japanese curry is sometimes so intense. Its such a different & beautiful flavour.. one of my favorite curries ever!

      I love all of the curries. Indian, Japanese, etc., but Japanese curry is my ultimate comfort food! Perhaps I'm a little biased being half Japanese 😊.

    Thank you for this. My mom was 1st generation and made this all the time. She would also drizzle Tonkatsu sauce or serve it with pickled eggplant with ginger, (purple in color) Your video reminded me of my childhood and seeing my mother cook in the kitchen. I am 48 now and I cook for my family almost everyday, Okasan never wrote down her recipes, I memorized all of her recipes from watching and being taught to cook, since I was 9 years old.

      Well, the "teaching" part can get confusing when you hear instructions such as "1 tablespoon woo-sister sauce" ......... a sibling was unfortunately injured in the making of this sauce.

    I made today and it made me very homesick... I miss my parents in Okinawa. I came to America in 1989 right after the sorrowful death of Misora Hibari. I remember this is the last meal my mother made me. But it’s bitter sweet. I miss Okinawa but I’m glad I can make food that my mother made for me. ❤️

    Made this for a friend dinner and everyone including me loved it! I followed all of the directions which were short and sweet and added the additional ingredients just like she did. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a semi-quick and extremely easy comforting winter meal.

    This has become my to-go recipe! I have a favourite japanese restaurant in Italy, a super small 6-tables run by two Japanese moms, that I can't go to anymore because I moved to Spain for work a year ago. I moved just before New Year's Eve, which I had to spend alone in a new house, and I made this curry to cheer myself up.
    It has since then become my comfort food. It gave me the courage to go to the local asian neighbourhood to stock up on ingredients. When I'm feeling down, especially during this crazy period we're experiencing, I just turn this video on and I make curry. Thank you so much!

    Just made this for dinner!!! Was soooo good. I don't have apricot jam so I tried to experiment and used one apple (grated) and sauteed it with the onion and added some apple juice. It tasted like authentic Japanese curry! Such a wonderful recipe. Thanks!

      I would ise grayed Apple over the jam. It’s common to add a bit of grated apple, milk, soy sauce, ketchup etc. all in tablespoon amounts

    Potatoes will crumble if you cook for 40 min. About 20 min. is enough. Beef is much tender if you cook over 40 min. So I usually add potatoes towards the end.

      While it’s entirely opinion, I agree with you. I cook the potatoes for 15-20 mins and the very edges are soft and crumbly but the center has that nice toothy bite to it. Same with carrots. Onions however, I like nice and melted

    Norkio & Yuko, this recipe is so good! This should be a staple in EVERY recipe book. No matter your background you will LOVE this recipe. It's not very spicy, but spicy enough for "heat" lovers, savory, filling, delicious, and comforting. This recipe is EVEN better the second day for leftovers when all of the spices have marinated together. I used peach/mango jam,added 3 cloves of garlic,1 peeled+grated gala apple(at the end),added more water,some mushrooms, and used skirt steak). It was amazing

      +Alexa Ng It's not that spicy at all. Also you can have the sweet one.. A little bit spicy and the very spicy one. There are variations.

    Ok so I tried this with chicken, and it was so good.. I didn't put all the extras at the end except for ketchup and soy sauce .. Today I'm doing the beef! Thanks for the recipe it's really easy.. I'm not one for complicated dishes.. Lol

      You can substitute beef with almost anything, pork, chicken, shrimp, squids, ground meat, meatballs...or just vegetables. One time our friend, an American, brought some octopus legs (or hands?) to put into our second-day curry. That was the first time for me to have octopus curry. Personally I prefer the thin-sliced beef in my curry.

    I cooked this last night for 10 hungry people (mostly boys) and it was a HIT. I stumbled upon this video and read through the recipe link and all its comments. I changed the beef chucks as presented here, to thinly sliced Korean Beef Brisket (aka chadolbaegi) for the flavorful fat. I think beef sukiyaki cut will work well too. Don't skip on the "optional" seasonings as it was THE game changer -- ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, strawberry jam (no apricot jam from where I'm from), soy sauce, and S&B curry powder. The optional seasonings definitely added depth to the taste. Overall, my Japanese curry turned out EXCELLENT and could pass as Coco Ichibanya's karee but CLEANER. Served it with tonkatsu. My first time cooking this and it definitely won't be my last 🍛

      @@LaTanaDelRumore making curry from scratch is labor intensive. Most professional chefs use and reccomend the cubes because they taste better. I hope your comment was a joke lmao

    I made this for my husband a month or so ago and he absolutely LOVED IT! I actually had to cook it for 4 hours since I felt like the sauce wasn’t thick enough. It was to die for and I’m making it again tomorrow ❤️❤️

      All you need to get it thick is more roux.

      Mix starch and water and add them about 5 minutes before it's done it will thicken it without changing the flavor

    Couple years back I really wanted to have a Japanese curry but I couldn't find a halal place so I ended up cooking it myself using a recipe online. When I cooked it and ate it I didnt enjoy it because im not fully happy with my cooking thinking its not how it would taste. Now that there are more Asian halal restaurants, I had a Katsu curry sauce and it tasted like the one I made and it tasted good! I was really surprised...I should be more confident!

    I've made this recipe a couple times and it's so good I make a batch and eat it for a week. I've made it with beef and chicken thighs. Just recently I made and substituted one regular potato for a sweet potato and it's super good! I don't normally like sweet potato but in this recipe it's flavor is very similar to the carrot and potato so it blends right in.

    Japanese Curry doesn't came from India, it was introduced by the self defense marine armada of Japan when they used the manual from the England marine corps when made a reform of the military structure, the curry from Japan was just an adaptation of the food given to the Japanese people was not used to be familiarized with the smell and taste of beef (the primary form of curry of England) it also is more given the appearance of a gravy than a curry. Because of that, the name of Japanese curry has a different name when pronounced is was less aggressive in the taste of the hotness and more thickness, the curry was something from India, mutated in England, adapted for the taste people in Japan, The same with bread and many other occidental foods.
    The use of curry roux comes when the curry pass from a former food from self defense marine forces from japan to homes (when soldiers finished their service they would miss that flavor, and then the curry was popular in some restaurants in the time the occidental world became to be more available to people there) To fill that sector of the market food companies invented a easier way to make curry at home by making a curry mix base making it accessible to everyone an becoming then a familiar comfort food because of the difficulty of making curry from scratch who was make by professional chefs at the marine corps having a manual to make it.

    It does enhance the flavor of the curry once you put ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in. I don’t have the jam but I use a little bit of palm sugar. I also use panko tofu to substitute the meat, the curry gave it a wonderful taste eating together. Thank you for the recipe. ❤❤

    I adapted this slightly by using the ketchup/apriocot jam/soy sauce/Worcestershire sauce with a little added corn/potato starch as a marinade for the beef, it really helps tenderize the meat and cuts down the overall cooking time.

    I've made this recipe several times and it's always delicious! My five year old loves it😊 I add a bay leaf with the veg and beef while they simmer. If you keep the potato chunks large they won't completely disappear into the sauce. I usually don't have apricott preserves so I use honey

    Watching this video was a nice way to learn how to cook Japanese curry. Made it last Saturday and it was good. Can’t tell the difference between the restaurant and homemade. You can save a lot of money making it your own. With the ingredients bought at a Japanese Market for under 13 dollars, the curry lasted 3 days. Good leftover dish. Instead beef I bought pork, it was on sale/clearance for under 3 dollars. Worth it.

      I agree with you. Pretty sure curry translates to meat/vegetables in sauce. Never met a curry or stew that I didn't like. 😂

    i tried this for the first time today and WOWW its one of the best dishes ive made myself!! its very simple and very delicious, took only around an hour to make including the rice (i dont have a rice cooker so i made that too) thank you for these instructions!!

    Oh my god this is now a house favorite, I didn't have beef so I subbed with chicken which cut down on the cooking time but wow was this good and my first time trying curry since I always thought all curry was spicy.

    Just cooked this yesterday using S&B Golden Curry, it tasted like superb. The taste is kinda near our Philippine Caldereta from the spaniards. but this is the best. we used Pork Loin, :D

      No one cares about the Philippines because, unlike Chinese or Japanese, we haven't really shared our culture with other people so far. Though I can assure you, our traditions are fascinating as well, and our food is delicious and the landscapes are amazing.

    I made it using this recipe and it is soo good! Didn't use but only two cubes of curry and added in some corn starch to thicken it up and it is soo good! I still have some left for later! yummy!
