Ippei was more like a manager than a translator. They know each other since 2013. At that point in time Shohei was 19 years in his first year!

If Shohei had taken care of those 16 million and been more careful or worried about he wouldn’t had have 700 million dollars contract, simple as that, he is dedicated to his craft and he doesn’t care about the money as normal people do, because he is not a normal human being, now if he starts to pay attention to his economy and do whatever worker people do, forget about the Ohtani as a player we know, I hope the people that is criticizing the careless person don’t destroy the lousy player.

Shohei has to take care of this himself?? Which American player takes care of “it” by themselves in Japan in NPB😂 even after a decade..nope!
Also ENGLISH SPEAKING celebs and sports pros have been defrauded by their advisors, confidants and partners and never noticed it much bigger amounts!! It’s not just language problem! It’s call FRAUD!!

Kratz is dead wrong about Ippei being selected by the team as Shohei’s interpreter. Ippei working for the Ham Fighters in Japan when Ohtani started with that team and came to the US specifically to be Ohtani’s interpreter. The Angels didn’t have the real opportunity to vett Ippei because Ohtani effectively told the Angels that Ippei was his interpreter. At that time, landing Ohtani was a very competitive situation, so the Angels were at a disadvantage of saying “No” or insisting on a full background check of Ippei. I heard David Samson say that when they signed Ichiro to the Marlins that Ichiro’s long-time interpreter was part of the package deal. Samson said that was the only time ever that he didn’t vett an employee because Ichiro would not have signed if the team insisted on vetting his interpreter. Because the relationship with an interpreter is close by the nature of the job, a player or anyone needing an interpreter is going to want someone they know and are comfortable doing that job with them.

I read in an article that Ipppei got acquainted with Boyer through David Fletcher of the Angels. If that's the case, shouldn't FBI also look into Fletcher? What about other players on the Angels?

I saw that Ippei went up to Shohei and asked if he could be his translator. I mean considering how long Shohei knew the guy way before 2018, it's not that crazy how much trust there was.

Let's not forget that the gambling addiction angle is the main reason for how this came about. I'm sure Ippei is a decent person but like most addicts it brings out the worst in a person once you're hooked. I've known some who got hooked would pawn valuables just to be able to gamble.

Ippei came with Ohtani to the US to be his interpreter. Signing Ohtani was very competitive and hiring Ippei was part of the deal to sign Ohtani. Ippei was working for the Nippon Gam Fighets when Ohtani started play for that team in 2013, so they knew each other for 5 years before Ohtani signed with the Angels. So, the Angels were at a loss in being able to vett Ippei, as they wouldn’t have been able to sign Ohtani if they insisted on vetting him.
