I absolutely love this series(?), I don’t know what to call it but whatever it is, I love watching it. Your videos are literally soo so fun to watch and I always get so much inspo from your fits despite us having completely different styles since I dress more girly, but these always help :)
I loved hearing the history of these garments! I took fibers in school, and the only explanation I can think of for why companies mix synthetics with wool is to be more cost-effective or "soften" the fabric content, as wool can be pretty rough. Acrylic is a very soft fabric, so mixing it with wool can make it less rough and itchy.
I have never commented on any of the channels that I kinda follow. I absolutely LOVE / ADORE yours! Research. History. True style. Genuine inspiration. Thank you !
@percish I also love watches. I have enough of them that my daughter gifted me a case to store them. I have several Swatch models. Fun, classic and innovative styles, with great quality (Swiss-made, owned by Movado).
Cannot praise Fracap hiking boots enough. Coming in under $400 new, I’ve had mine for a little under five years, they wear like iron and aged beautifully.
I really like your video series about city boys look because it fits so much my aesthetic. I'm a little bit older and I don't live in a big city, so I have a less fashionable style. I wear a lot of second hand knitted sweaters (thanks Vinted). Most of them are oversized so my cat can come inside the sweater to have a little nap. They go well with high waisted pants, dark colored, tailored and very classic and button up shirts with nice patterns or oversized.
I love the painting of the weavers in Duffel with their long chic skimming dresses and statement headwear, so elegant. Duffel coats - I used to love them and I have seen a great one in Primark of all places, but I'm 58 and like a less casual look these days, I'll wear a jacket with a couple of patch pockets but my duffel coat days are over.
Any amount of other material mixed in with the wool will interfere with the felting process and will cause the wool felt to be a less cohesive fabric. The resulting wool fibers will not be as tightly tangled together which will yield a far less superior fabric. It will be less durable, more difficult to repair, less wind resistant, less water repellant and ultimately less efficient at thermal retention and regulation. Im sure theres a lot of decent duffel coats that aren't 100% wool, but a pure wool felt is always going to be superior for this particular use. If you're going to spend the money, you may as well just spring for the pure wool. Its totally worth it.
I love that you highlighted the duffel coat, it's been my all-time favorite coat for a few years. I was obsessed with this style of coat since in high school I saw the male main character of the manga Horigami wear a navy blue one. It wasn't until moving out to the city for my first big boy job several years later that I found an Eddie Bauer rendition at Goodwill. It looked just like the one I saw in the manga, and I've worn it everywhere since. It's the perfect rain coat!

I've been into watches for about 15 years, and collect mainly automatic mechanical watches. I must say that my most recent trip to Tokyo really made me appreciate Seiko more than I ever have, after visiting the mega shop in Ginza. Warning: It's a fun hobby, but it can become very addictive and expensive, because you can find yourself looking for watches for any and all outfit types, seasons, and situations.
Hello, everyone! The archipelago that Fair Isle is a part of is Shetland. I will not have this go unmentioned. Sincerely, man who wrote his master's thesis on the Shetland dialect
Sometimes a little bit of nylon/polyester/polyamide (1-20%) is okay to help strengthen the weave of the wool and make the coat last longer. But anymore than that, you should definitely be skeptical of the manufacturer cutting corners.
Watches are a great accessory and I'd love a video on them. They are a little tricky because there are so many options and styles and name brand luxury vs more affordable options. Then there's buying vintage! But Id love to hear them talked about when looking at them as a part of an outfit!
I think metal closures on the fireman’s jackets would get hot way faster than wood. Metal conducts heats while wood does not. I think the choice of material was for durability much more than fire resistance.
I love vintage hiking boots! I just picked up the Eddie Bauer K6s and I've been loving them. Leather, goretex, goodyear welt, and the look was well worth the $100 sale price. Definitely trying to find the name of these kinds of boots is difficult lol; I've read some old timers online call them waffle stompers. Others mentioned Limmer and Fracap, both MTO brands if you have the money and time. Less expensive options (
From what i understand as a shoe and boot enthusiast the European mountaineer style came originally from Italy, company called Fracap. There is similar ideas made in the same time in Germany, Austria and France, Paraboot being one of the surviving companies. This is all around 40s from what i understand. Later the us made they’re version they call hikers by companies as Limer, Viberg (Canada) and most famous Danner that added new technology to tham and become famous because of it, early adopters of Goretex if i got that right. Im trying to get info on this because it is not all to clear but i find it fascinating
Love the little comments on fabric composition. I am quite obsessive about things like that and was also raised to really avoid synthetics (for quality reasons) but I am sure there is a case to be made for some fabric mixes with synthetics (not talking about functional wear here which is a completely different story I guess). And most importantly its always nice to keep things fun and not take oneself (and fabric composition) too serious! :D - My duffle coat is an old camel Gloverall which is 70%Wool, 20% Polyamide and 10% Polyester which a friend gave to me. It looks and wears great. Alas some buttons came off / the leather straps ripped and I need to get that fixed and I am not yet sure where.
If you have trouble telling time, I recommend getting a field watch that has the minutes written out along with the hours. That means you don't have to do any guesswork. Little hand points to 1, big hand points to 37. Bob's your uncle.
Not a huge fan of duffle coats (personally) but as soon as you started going over them I was hoping you would mention the fireman's coat and I was so happy when you did
There's an Italian company called Fay who's been making 4 hooks coats since the 80's. They make all sort of things with the 4 hooks closing (down jackets, vests, leather jackets). They had for a few years a premium line designed by Alessandro Squarzi of Fortela. I would shop vintage or second hand. As for those "whole cuts hiking boots" in Italian they do have a specific name, they're called "pedule". As they're originally from the Alps I believe that there's a German term too (idk). The OG versions have a true "Norvegese" construction, there's a Norwegian company (the boots are made in Austria) called Dundas who still sell those. Also Limmer makes those in New Hampshire (they're MTM line) . Then you have the ones who are just "Norwegian Welted" like the Paraboots or the RTW Limmers. And then a ton of companies just make a stitchdown version i.e. Danner, Fracap, Velasca. Fracaps have like 30 different uppers options and 4 different outsoles.
Oh Boy, am i excited for you to get into watches. I think you should be careful cause it can be a rabbit hole as big as fashion is, but it's rewarding in the same ways. If you love quality in fashion you'll get the watch community! Start small. You'll se that even going for a cheap digital casio that fit your wrist is gonna make a big difference on how you perceive the watch as a part of your fits.
FYI, as a fiber purist: If the garment lists content like 90% wool/10% polyamide, without any further information, it usually means the outer shell (main body) of the coat is the wool and the polyamide or other synthetic fiber is the coat lining and/or details such as seam finishings and closures like the toggles on the duffel coat. Nowadays, it's virtually impossible to find any garment liner fabric or finishing details that are natural fibers, so this is not a knock against the coat. If the main body of the coat is pure wool, that's a good coat. So do double check whether the main body of the coat is pure fiber or blended. It will affect the function and durability as well as the look. Lol from a place of love re telling time on a watch - dear sweet sibling-human, you'll get used to it, and it's a skill worth cultivating, if only because an actual watch is so much cooler than a phone or digital watch. Once you feel a bit more comfortable with that, your next challenge will be to navigate with paper maps. 😉
such a great video as I'm putting a Buyee order together right now! no one bid on the CDG duffle that's 8 cents right now... just watched Submarine for the first time and loved the two character's coats!

I didn’t even know it was called a duffel coat, and I wasn’t really looking for it but I wanted something more casual and found one at a used store, but it still had tags and was only ¥2000 and I love it
Great video! If you are getting into watches one thing I really enjoy is looking into Russian diving watches like Vostok. They are usually WAAAY cheaper than Swiss or Japanese and is quite easy to find pretty unique dial layouts like 24 hour dials. Also would love to hear your take on the Barbour discourse you alluded to as I’m not really familiar with it myself.
I believe there was some talk about it being a jacket for conservatives, particularly in the UK, however it seems to have lately seeped into some US conservative circles as a way to own the libs
I for one use watches as jewellery/accessory: the ones I use the most are from "Swatch", they last forever, the battery is changed for free. They even changed a worn out bracelet on the one I used for years for free....
My husband gifted me my favorite duffle coat when we first met but that was 10 years ago and my body has grown & I really wish I can find the same one again in a larger size😅 it was from uniqlo 100% wool!!!
Watched a good two part BBC documentary called “Fair Isle: Living on the Edge” during Covid, some of it followed the current textile artists that live there. Might have to hunt around to watch it online but it’s nice Sunday afternoon type viewing! Also true duffel coats to me are too close to everything I had as a child (growing up in the UK), but I’ve been lusting after the metal closures for a while. Where can I buy good closures so I can make it myself?? 😖
I can’t tell the time from my watch either and still love it, haha. I mean, I can. But it takes longer than reaching for my phone… my friends always make fun of this. But I just like having an accessory on my left wrist.
reading analog clocks is actually easier for me bc it's easy to tell at a glance how much time i have between things instead of having to do mental math
13:21 I remember telling a friend I struggled to read an analog clock in a timely manner. This conversation ended with the revelation that most people just ballpark the time for the minute hand. You and I may be the only ones trying to read the minute hand precisely.
lovely content--not to out-dad you, I'm sure the golfing Prince had a big effect on making Fair Isle sweaters popular, but I think that's burying the lead. Fair Isle women would knit those elaborate patterns, especially when a local fisherman died unexpectedly at sea, to support the fatherless family. Also, a Scottish explorer, William Bruce, took hundreds of pieces w/ him on an expedition to Antarctica because the wool was so practical. Just wanted to share b/c I think it's dope when a fashion piece has bad-ass history.
Surprised (or maybe not surprised?) about Project Watches. My wife got me a watch they made in collaboration with the Josef Albers foundation (which arrived months late) and then another one that has two sets of dials for two timezones. Both really nice watches! I also really like Nixon and I’ve always had one Casio whether analog or digital
No shame in a good Casio. I also grew up in the generation that finds it easier to read digital clocks. I own several anolog watches, but Casio and G-Shock are like comfort food for my wrist.
Love your videos and I enjoy watching them. Big Fan. Especially the cityboy videos. I’m heavily influenced by the Japanese. 😊 Have you or will you consider doing something on the styling for the Patagonia retro X fleece?
I LOVE city boy style and would love to wear more but I have an hourglass shape/ wider hips and find it hard to find pieces that work for the androgynous/city boy look. Do you have any people/influencers/ etc which you could suggest as inspo? I haven't managed to find many
“Not so expensive for a puffer coat” …. Almost $400… ?? That’s not expensive? And $700 for some boots?! That’s like half of my rent .. new boots or rent .. The new boots would be nice to have when you’re homeless though 😂😂
Casio Watches are awesome! If you want to get into watches, please try to avoid "Fashion Brands" and "Micro Brands." They almost always either overpriced or a disappointment, or both. The older brands that have been around for a while tend to draw from the history and context of watches so their looks are more coherent.
now, i just picked up a Barbour coat from a thrift shop for $20, so i was really hoping you would say something about it, as i have no idea what "the discourse" is ... (although it is mid-summer in Australia, so i will be waiting a few months to wear it ...)
@@percish hey thanks! not really something i would have thought about previously, but you are right it ticks all the boxes (durable, practical, high quality, proven design ... what draws me to this "style" in the first place, and hence your channel, the only "fashion" channel i follow! ) 😎
@@aranyawaasii of course 🤗 to be clear the discourse was just about whether the coat is being co-opted as like a marker of conservatism in the US (which is fine to discuss, I just don’t have anything particular to say on the topic)
@@percish oh. i didn't see that one coming. British class politics perhaps. Benjamin said that fascism was about the aestheticisation of politics, but this is something the American right remains apparently oblivious to, which is probably for the best. There's certainly nothing particularly aesthetically endearing about Trump & co ... & for some reason my mental picture of conservative America in Barbour seems equally cheap and unconvincing ... Actually, now I am reminded of this gem ... th-cam.com/video/kxzONeK1OwQ/w-d-xo.html 🤣
You get used to telling time on ur watch and you only need to loosely know the time most of the time! I got an issue miyake watch in Japan that I've been rocking a lot, it's all black. I bought some spingle boots, been rocking the longer trench coats/wool overcoat and denim coats for winter.
I’ve always loved this style but I’ve been getting into AllSaints lately as they released a collection called blvck mvgic and I’m so obsessed lol. Obviously most of the items are black and it is inspired by goth. I had a duffle coat a while back but unfortunately donated it! It was by Topman around 2017. I’m afraid of some of these vintage duffle coats cause they look way too long
I would make an educated guess that the polyester and nylon fabric is in a lining of the sleeves or pockets or something? Hard to tell when they don't specific Shell fabric vs Lining or otherwise
I live in Japan - it will be 15 years in March - and quite honestly I never ever see people clothed in this manner. Maybe a piece here or there as an accent or feature, and mainly on the very young or trendy set. I do see many beautifully dressed men and women who don classic lines and silhouettes that employ natural fibers which drape and move well. City Boy? Not so much. Perhaps it’s my eye that sees what It wants to see?

Also true duffel coats to me are too close to everything I had as a child (growing up in the UK), but I’ve been lusting after the metal closures for a while. Where can I buy good closures so I can make it myself?? 😖
@@k.8-t1v Yes there is something that feels childish about a duffle coat, but that can be fun to play off of!
Always tempted by a duffel but it would have limited use for me as it wouldn’t be nearly warm enough for our winters.
Hi! What is the name of the women's magazine you mentioned?
I can’t tell the time from my watch either and still love it, haha. I mean, I can. But it takes longer than reaching for my phone… my friends always make fun of this. But I just like having an accessory on my left wrist.
reading analog clocks is actually easier for me bc it's easy to tell at a glance how much time i have between things instead of having to do mental math
7:45 what is the beef with the Barbour barn coat??
13:21 I remember telling a friend I struggled to read an analog clock in a timely manner. This conversation ended with the revelation that most people just ballpark the time for the minute hand. You and I may be the only ones trying to read the minute hand precisely.
Paraboot uses a norwegian welt in contrast to the other alternatives you mentioned. And their are made in france, that is costly.
Danners are made in Oregon with union labor which is probably 3 times the price then Paraboots labor cost. (I wouldn't buy Danners).
fracap is also a brand that makes that style of hiking boots
ahh it really is 2012 again time to go dig in my bins from 10 years ago and re-wear some stuff
the casio ae90 watch is digital, but the top part of it is a digitized analog watch, so you can have both lol
hey loved the video but at one point i didn't know what the video was about anymore
lovely content--not to out-dad you, I'm sure the golfing Prince had a big effect on making Fair Isle sweaters popular, but I think that's burying the lead.
@@skinnyflip87 no of course! I did possibly the most brief piece of history on fair isle possible.
I wore those boots in college in the 1980s
Surprised (or maybe not surprised?) about Project Watches. My wife got me a watch they made in collaboration with the Josef Albers foundation (which arrived months late) and then another one that has two sets of dials for two timezones. Both really nice watches! I also really like Nixon and I’ve always had one Casio whether analog or digital
@@ravelrm it just felt like it happened so fast! one moment they were sending me watches and the next they were gone
@ a toast to companies that put out cool stuff in spite of their untimely demise
No shame in a good Casio. I also grew up in the generation that finds it easier to read digital clocks. I own several anolog watches, but Casio and G-Shock are like comfort food for my wrist.
$400 for a custom fit pair of hiking boots is actually a really good price
Love your videos and I enjoy watching them. Big Fan. Especially the cityboy videos. I’m heavily influenced by the Japanese. 😊
Have you or will you consider doing something on the styling for the Patagonia retro X fleece?
Paddington Bear was a G. The OG city boy. ✊🏾
The coat section is tripping me out because in like 2014 I had a jackets that looked like 5:56 and 7:33. They weren’t as expensive tho 😵💫
Check the Ladage & Oelke Duffle Coat. The best.
love barbour ... whats the tea though on this barn coat though lol
People arguing that it’s become a right/conservative sort of dog whistle
now, i just picked up a Barbour coat from a thrift shop for $20, so i was really hoping you would say something about it, as i have no idea what "the discourse" is ... (although it is mid-summer in Australia, so i will be waiting a few months to wear it ...)
@@aranyawaasii it’s not worth discussing imo! It’s a great and classic coat, congrats 💞
@ omg amazing pull
I’m afraid of some of these vintage duffle coats cause they look way too long
Fairisle is a misnomer. They originated in Pakistan
Careful that watch iceberg is deep, and you can spend all of the money. That said there's a ton of fun stuff in the sub $1000 range
I would make an educated guess that the polyester and nylon fabric is in a lining of the sleeves or pockets or something? Hard to tell when they don't specific Shell fabric vs Lining or otherwise
@@skittykay I assume they’re talking about the shell! Otherwise I’ve never seen it denoted that way
yeah I do see they do break it out into lining vs shell in other listings and most of their shells are 80% wool 20% polyamide
@percish ah okay interesting. I didn't know much about duffle coats before this video so I wasn't sure if a lining was standard or not
@ traditionally they didn’t have livings, but a lot of the newer versions do
Wool becomes much more stable and durable with the addition of plastic fibers. That’s why they’re adding the plastic fibers.
How did you get a hold of those Popeye magazines and how can I find other brands?
Where do you pick up your copies of Popeyes? I live in BK too and have looking for somewhere to buy them!
Love the video as usual! ❤ where do you find your Popeye magazines? I live in the states
@@shaffroncity eBay! Or a couple shops in nyc have them
@percish thank you!!
@@tdfrie yes the title is a bit of a misnomer, it’s around but not so common
