To me, the smartest decision ever made by a character in a horror movie happens in Scream 2 - but it isn't Sidney's at all. After finding out what happened to the former cameraman and witnessing a murder in his own news van, Joel - Gale's new assistant - simply calls a cab and quits the jib, not after telling Gale that she needs her head examined for actively chasing a serial killer on the loose and not returning in the film until the killings have ceased. As he wisely says previously in the movie: "I want to report the news, I don't want to be the news." It's really refreshing to see a character who has basic self-preservation skills in the horror genre.
Ikr. By far my favorite character in the movie, in the entire beginning of the movie he was questioning and telling gale to be careful. This dude knows how to get out of stuff and I will forever thank the horror movie gods for gifting us with this character.
When I saw Brett turn on his car lights to escape Diana, I just went "YEEEEAAAHHHH, BUDDY!!!!!" Not only does the boyfriend survive, he is actually SMART!!!
I love his character, pretty sure he was a long gone after he was able to escape with the phone cuz horror love killing those who seems to make it. But I was laughing so hard when he used the front light. I think that was one of my favorite moment of the movie. Lol
Another smart decision made by a kid; Tommy Jarvis hacking Jason to death. You don't ever let that bastard get back up. You keep hacking and slashing at him until he no longer breathes.
Suddenly remembers Andy (from Child's Play) using random items to make it seem like he's sleeping when Chucky comes it to steal his body. 🤔 Ashanti Berry. You may be on to something?
The blood test scene in The Thing is and will always be my favorite in horror movies. The tension is so palpable and you can practically feel the anxiety from the characters expressions. Simply brilliant
Yes, but they cocked up by tying everyone too close together after just finding out that it can detach parts of itself and infect through contact. Sneaky pieces that would jump start the process, but not yet register on the blood test due to it being gradual cell conversion and that gore explosion after one was found puts too many at risk
@@FlamesAndShadows yeah I never understood why they tied so many people with same rope...that was a bit weird. I guess they just did it that way to make them more helpless for that scene when the Thing reacted and started attacking, which does make more suspenseful.
Brett in Lights Out was the epitome of “lover designed to be killed off”, and he outsmarted a stereotype I had pegged him for from the beginning! I was extremely pleased with the whole film.
Bret's idea in lights out was so freaking good. I can't help but appreciate it when a horror movie gives side characters a clever way to survive and get help.
Oh no, no, no. This list is sooo wrong. The very, undisputed, ultimate smartest move by a character in a horror movie was made by Alex in "Wishmaster", by uttering the following words: "I wish Mickey Torelli hadn't been drinking two days ago". An act of total brilliance that not only saved her but literally undid all damage done by the villain. For the last 1000 years, at least...
Which never made sense. It was the nature of the djinn to twist wishes. So Mickey Torelli might not have been drinking two days ago but he could have been on some other type of drug.

I just finished watching "Train to Busan" for the first time, and I think that one's got a good contender. The zombies are the "fast-moving" type in that one and are totally relentless, but are only active if they can actually see prey in front of them. They have no short-term memory whatsoever, so as soon as they can't see a human to kill they immediately become benign (provided they can't hear them either). So the protagonist is able to get an attacking zombie off of him by...throwing a coat over its head. It can no longer see him or hear him over the surrounding din and so it stops attacking.
I agree! Some of the characters in Train to Busan make some pretty smart decisions, including putting newspapers up on the window of the train so the zombies will stop attacking, because like you said, they only attack what they can see.

Yep, hitting that big red purge button resulted in one of the greatest scenes in horror movie history. I had no idea what was coming the first time I saw it, and I laughed so hard I was crying. Especially at the mermaid scene! Or the unicorn.
My favourite ‘ smart moment’ in a horror movie is actually from the new Halloween where the daughter tricks Michael into thinking she’s hysterical, thus not a threat despite the gun in her hands. Man was he wrong.
The way I like to see the ending to a cabin in the woods is the fact that the two remaining survivors become movie monster themselves: covered in blood, wielding weapons, high as a kite, not afraid anymore to kill.
It wasn’t mentioned, but the two teens from Bride of Chucky were also pretty smart when they made Chucky and Tiff go against each other and the girl ended up shoving Tiffany into the oven. I thought it was pretty clever how they used reverse psychology and kissing up to get them fighting
2:11 i remember watching this in a theater, at this scene everyone actually laughed and clapped that he did that smart move. It broke the clichés of horror movies for everyone who watched it
In switchblade romance, the main character goes to clean up and hide in a public restroom, and dries the taps after she's used them. That's pretty smart, especially when the killer checks the taps for recent use! It's either subverted or explained by the ending, depending on whether or not you like the movie.
The Invisible Man is so creepy to me, like I would def rather be haunted by a ghost or something rather than be stalked by a psycho I can't see thanks to a weird super suit
Really the drawing blood scene, I would've gone with Invisible Man's climax where she sets up main villain Adrian's assassination/fake suicide and gets away with killing him by using the 3rd cloaking suit she found and conveniently tucked away during the early half of the film I mean that was great forethought and anticipating on her part she knew even if she got the confession Adrian being the manipulative scumbag that he is would've figured out a way to get off scot free so she decided to set his death up and this was a smart move along with remembering where in the mansion she stored the 3rd cloaking suit I mean as soon as she said "I need to go to the bathroom to wash up" that was pretty much the signal to Adrian's well-deserved death.
Satisfying moments for me were the “Cabin in the Woods” and “Get Out”. Boy these two movies did not disappoint me ever. Scream 2 also was satisfying when Sidney shot the killer in the head just to be sure. And I was like, “YEAH! get him Sidney” 😂😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Nice list though.
1:38, even if the movie is nothing special you can't deny that this guy is smart and fast as hell. I love when people are smart, that made everything more intense.
when you think how low budget Evil Dead was, it really makes sense why its one of the best, if not the best. The THING is a remake done right that does exactly what a good movie should do. Plus the effects used in that movie have all aged perfectly, cept for the stomach opening part, but that was like a quick 2 seconds.

Gotta say it's good to see there are people who do smart decisions in horror movies! I especially love going "that's pretty smart" over nightmare on elm street, a quiet place, get out, and Halloween and the Invisible Man and Misery!
You know, for someone who doesn't watch horror movies, this list is a blast to watch and enjoy.Behold, some of these smart decisions are brilliant ideas to put to practice in case a horror movie scenario ever shows up that I need to survive, right?😃
That was a great spoof! Also, did you know the blond guy, Alexander Ludwig, from The Final Girls so also in the movie Final Girl with Abigail Breslin? Not sure Final Girl counts as a horror movie, but everything Veronica does in that movie is a smart move!
When the brother in the Evil Dead remake suffocates and buries Mia alive to purge the demon possessing her instead of burning her, then uses a car battery as a defibrillator to revive her was pretty fucking smart
Do a "Smartest Decisions In Action Movies". I nominate Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies. She and Arnold escape the torture hut and the first thing she does is step out of her high heels and leave them behind. Not a lot of attention is even brought to it, but I remember me, my best friend and about 5 other women scattered around the theatre started applauding. Any other action movie, the woman would keep the heels on, causing her to fall and endanger herself and/or the 'hero'. This was great.
They're doing something good. As much as people complain about Watchmojo, it's nice to see them putting out videos that can help people get through what's happening.
I think in Saw 6 Detective Marc Hoffmann breaking his hand ankle to get free of the chair and smash his face in to the door window to save himself from the reverse bear trap was also a smart decision
Here is how you handle 'It Follows'. The movie shows the monster is physically there. Even people who cannot see it can interact with it. Fill a super soaker with diluted paint. Walk around near some police or other witnesses, then spray the invisible thing to show everyone there is something there. There, now the thing is visible, and you can just keep walking or get a ride away from it. Maybe get the military interested to catch the thing for study.
I remember when i watched the quiet place when the dude died at the end i almost cried to be honest. Or when the boy died it the beginning of the movie.
Although it’s implied, we are never told if he goes through with sleeping with the prostitute or not in it follows, that’s a main theme of the movie .. ambiguity.
Good on you for mentioning Hush, that movie is phenomenal, but shame on you for not mentioning You're Next for basically everything Erin does. The best final girl.
Paul Sheldon didn't Actually burn "Misery's Return" - he had re-typed the cover page, a few of the top pages, and sat that on top of a bunch of blank paper. Then he set fire to That🔥! He kept the book he wrote at Annie's, and after he escaped, had it published. Even smarter!😜
“Chased down” by Michael Myers 😂, more like being Leisurely strolled to death, all you had to do was get a gun and some distance, which you can do by just walking fast. Get out = amazing
I’m a few years late but there was a scene in the movie The Faculty as well, where they had used the science lab to make a chemical that would show who has the parasite after they snort it (although the queen was smart enough to pretend to take it but had instead used her pinky to open it and let it leak out before pretending to take it)
Horror movie trends spike when the world is darker, it gives people a cathartic release from the built up stress. IT's when the dark times start clearing up that we get the feel good surge of movies/tv.
Never seen any of those movies but those were very smart decisions. I almost didn’t get “using a pig” meant but I’m like oh, okay I get it. Isn’t it obvious that there’s 2 mother issues? Scream 2 and Friday the 13th?
Yes,but the whole idea is that only married couples are allowed to have sex, especially when it comes to becoming parents and raising your children together.Don't ask me why,it's true..
*spoilers for Willy's Wonderland* I feel like The Janitor and Liv both made some pretty smart decisions in Willy's Wonderland. The Janitor used his resourcefulness, quickthinking, and skills to no not only stay alive but kill off the animatronics. Meanwhile Liv was smart enough to bring a weapon and even made the hilariously brilliant decision to use a shot gun as a melee weapon!
11:15 Later in the movie those same characters refused to sacrifice themselves to save the human race and ended up dying with the rest of the world anyway.

The THING is a remake done right that does exactly what a good movie should do. Plus the effects used in that movie have all aged perfectly, cept for the stomach opening part, but that was like a quick 2 seconds.
Evil dead 2
David R lol I bet it would be
I love your number one! Danny covering his tracks was brilliant!

Just remove shark tales and add epic!
Didn't watchmojo made a top 10 smart decisions in horror movies. So is this part 2
I think this is part 3
It's not part 2, this list contains all of the items from the original top 10 list. It just seems to be an update to put some of the newer films in.
Well this is an top 20 unlike the other one
Gotta say it's good to see there are people who do smart decisions in horror movies! I especially love going "that's pretty smart" over nightmare on elm street, a quiet place, get out, and Halloween and the Invisible Man and Misery!
Who else clicked this to find a good horror to watch
👋💛
It's nice to find final girls who aren't complete and total morons.
✋🏿
You know, for someone who doesn't watch horror movies, this list is a blast to watch and enjoy.Behold, some of these smart decisions are brilliant ideas to put to practice in case a horror movie scenario ever shows up that I need to survive, right?😃
Seeing The Final Girls on this list makes me SOOOOOOO happy! It's such a whacky horror spoof
That was a great spoof!
Also, did you know the blond guy, Alexander Ludwig, from The Final Girls so also in the movie Final Girl with Abigail Breslin?
Not sure Final Girl counts as a horror movie, but everything Veronica does in that movie is a smart move!
I saw the title and thought, Is there any at all?
No
You clearly don't watch horror films
Karen Strode's breakdown in Halloween 2018 *SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST* cuz that decision was *INGENIOUS*
underrated comment
This guy from lights out was one of the smartest people in horror movies I have ever seen. Was sad that she got him
I’m surprised he didn’t just hop in his car and turn on the interior lights
Cabin in the Woods is one of the best "wtf is happening" in the middle of a movie ever. It's hilarious, scary, and clever!!!
Nobody:
*WatchMojo*: literally Making everyones quarantine way better 🌟
Have I seen you before 🤔
Ps; I agree
They're doing something good. As much as people complain about Watchmojo, it's nice to see them putting out videos that can help people get through what's happening.
@@aaronsmith2688 Amen.
It Follows is one of the best horror movies of the last decade. I think It Follows is hugely underrated!
I think in Saw 6 Detective Marc Hoffmann breaking his hand ankle to get free of the chair and smash his face in to the door window to save himself from the reverse bear trap was also a smart decision
The car lights scene had me and my buddies yelling “LETS GOOOO” in the theaters
I would’ve gone with tommy fooling Jason over Ginny since tommy was actually able to kill Jason
1:40 Our cinema cheered for the boyfriend in this scene.
When I watched that movie, it was jampacked and when he survive, oh boy, everyone was hyper af.
Mojo: top 20 smartest decisions
Me: I didn’t know people in horror movies could be smart
In a quiet place she should’ve just gone to the waterfall to give birth
That’s what I thought! They should’ve just lived by the waterfall
@@smpiano6605 well they knew they were pregnant so they could’ve gone there a while before they gave birth
I remember when i watched the quiet place when the dude died at the end i almost cried to be honest. Or when the boy died it the beginning of the movie.
I've yelled these ideas at the tv before they took em decisions 😂
I thought there was no such thing. “When you’re in a horror movie, you make dumb decisions. It’s what you do.”
You gotta love it when a 6 year old can make better decisions then most adults in horror movies
Another smart decision in a horror movie: Hoffman puts the reverse bear trap in the bars stopping it from tearing his jaws apart
Also almost everything cole did in both of the babysitter movies
How DARE you make this list and not put everything Erin does in You're Next! She was a BEAST in that one.
Although it’s implied, we are never told if he goes through with sleeping with the prostitute or not in it follows, that’s a main theme of the movie .. ambiguity.
I say not, as her fee would have doubled the cost of the making the movie.
What movie
@@yoursleepparalysisdemon8171,the horror movie It Follows(2014).
You did a wonderful job not spoiling the end to cloverfield they think the movies over when she gets out😂😂😂
20-1: Every decision in John Carpenter’s The Thing.
Good on you for mentioning Hush, that movie is phenomenal, but shame on you for not mentioning You're Next for basically everything Erin does. The best final girl.
Cabin in the woods was so unexpectedly good!
It’s well overrated
Paul Sheldon didn't Actually burn "Misery's Return" - he had re-typed the cover page, a few of the top pages, and sat that on top of a bunch of blank paper. Then he set fire to That🔥! He kept the book he wrote at Annie's, and after he escaped, had it published. Even smarter!😜
Even smarter because he lived Ave the crazy bad guy got exactly what they wanted?
“Chased down” by Michael Myers 😂, more like being Leisurely strolled to death, all you had to do was get a gun and some distance, which you can do by just walking fast.
Get out = amazing
I’m a few years late but there was a scene in the movie The Faculty as well, where they had used the science lab to make a chemical that would show who has the parasite after they snort it (although the queen was smart enough to pretend to take it but had instead used her pinky to open it and let it leak out before pretending to take it)
imo, Hush and You're Next got smart characters
“Picking cotton” in Get Out is the most ironic one 😂
I feel like with all the stuff happening in the world life more horror is the last thing we need.
No I need more horror lol BRING THE HORROR MOVIES!!!
Ashanti Berry yes!!
Horror movies are a vacation. I'm an old soldier.
Where’s Carmen Electra grabbing the banana in Scary Movie??
It was a stupid ass decision
Abram Sullivan you sure?🧐
Fun fact: In the script for Cabin in the Woods, for the purge scene it just said something along the lines of "chaos everywhere."
I like how leather face didn't kill the pig, he just wanted the person.
When ur so early, there’s no funny comments to read
DONT READ MY NAME
yep...true
Just did😎😎😎😎
Fact
#4 I like that Dana looks to Marty, the real virgin, for permission before pushing the button.
I love mojo soo much that’s y I started my own channel JHUB HD thanks 4 pushing me to start ❤️
12:31-12:34
What a great jumpscare, even for 1982!!
Extra: Making the cult drink non virgin blood (The babysitter: Killer Queen)
About setting a trap, it's the same thing that the Mystery Inc. did to capture the monsters in "Scooby Doo".
When they said ready I was thing of Freddie. Man Fred can set a trap with thr gang.
All this sex-shaming in horror movies needs to stop. Sex is good, sex is fine (as long as it’s consensual.)
Agreed
Yes,but the whole idea is that only married couples are allowed to have sex, especially when it comes to becoming parents and raising your children together.Don't ask me why,it's true..
Is even horizon here? The "we are leaving" line has become a meme pretty much.
This atually made me realise that I'm the only 18 year old that is afraid of mirrors, darkness and height.😣
I'm actually with you on the last one...
*spoilers for Willy's Wonderland*
I feel like The Janitor and Liv both made some pretty smart decisions in Willy's Wonderland.
Right I love the movie but I never understood why they didn’t just save the human race if they knew they were gonna die regardless lol
Hated the end.
