  • Triathletes should use these tips for the safest way to change flat tires on their bike. Triathlon Taren starts the day with a very short swim workout, then does his normal triathlon shoulder strength routine, after a busy day at work he explains how to change a flat tire while also providing a couple tips triathletes might not know about for extreme safety precautions.

    nice... i love how u come up with nice and useful videos always.. almost always lol... However u forgot to mention an important step before replacing the new tube, which is to check inside the tiere for the source of the original puncture and remove it; )

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for the tire changing instructions!!! That is so valuable to me. My husband always take care of our bikes, so I never ever bothered to learn this. Now, I need to practice it!

      Don't tell you you ever saw this, see how long you can get him to keep changing your tyres.

      I need to know for when I'm out riding, not for when ti's parked at home, he can keep doing that stuff. He actually enjoys it!

    Taren, it can't be that you're getting old! I refuse to believe it because I'm sure we are about the same age and I'm NOT getting old! haha! Great vid. Thanks.

    Thanks so much! Super helpful. I bought my first spare tube yesterday.
    If a tire goes flat in a triathlon, do you change it or just be done? I hope it never happens! My first try is Sunday. (International distance). Your channel has been the best daily motivation! Thank you SO much!

    Great tips!! I had a flat on a HIM in Santa Cruz last year, and spent a LOT of time changing the tires.. AND it has a pinch on it, so I ended up with another flat (and of course, no spare tires).. Thanks for the tips!

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try that press into the bead method, if you can avoid ever using a tyre lever you'll avoid a lot of pinches

      Hopefully, I will never need to use this, but if I do, I will definitely remember that!

    Another quick tip: If you don't want to lean down your bike (let's face it, you don't), you can always hang the frame up on a tree's branch, street sign or whatever
    Also, it is helpful to line up the valve and tire logo. That allows you to find the valve hole easily and most importantly, looks better ;)

      If you don't have extra accessories on your handlebar & you're on level ground, you could also just flip your bike over & let it rest on the handlebar & saddle. You may get a little dirt on your saddle, but you're either gonna cry about that or you're not.

      Kyle Calvert Sure, but you don't wanna scratch your saddle or hoods

      Triathlon Taren On my worst ride, I had three. whilst carrying only two tubes... Can't exactly say that I was too lucky so far. Might go tubeless eventually but bikes from the 80's weren't designed for that purpose

  • @41loony

    What about us fools who sometimes train with tubulars. So far my process is
    !- Get a flat as far from home as possible "110km a away"
    2-catastrophic flat resulting in lots of swearing
    3-Find a tim call a friend and eat 60 tim bits while a clerk eye balls the spandex wearing me :D

    Hi from France.
    How could we live without our daily shot of Tri Taren?
    Interesting to see the many variations in tyre changing methods. As stated by another trainiac, don't forget to check your tyre for any "pointy cutting" elements before re-rimming ( can you say that?) your tube.
    Otherwise when home I never use the handpump. I usually either use an aircompressor or a floot pump with an integrated manometer.
    And another $2 question: what sort of soap do you use to clean your hands?

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Re-rimming. HA! Just regular soap. I work in social media so people expect me to look like a hobo

    You can also find frame pumps that have a hose-style head, which will make it much easier on your wrists/arms when reinflating your tube. Topeak sells one for about $30. Remember: CO2 will get you to your next stop quickly, but a good frame pump will go the ultimate distance.

    I can't imagine using CO2 as something other than an emergency measure. The gas just escapes too fast to be practical. You'll finish the race (and not just finish) or workout, but you'll have a semi-flat after a day or two. What then - use 10 cartriges a month?

    • @InvestorAcademyPodca
      @InvestorAcademyPodca 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phxrsx So by adding an additional carbon atom to the molecule it makes it smaller? Just think a bit next time. After that, realize that when you fill with a pump it is mostly nitrogen which is much smaller than either O2 or CO2. Education is great.

    I disagree with the skewer direction. I think it is better to face backwards because you don't want your skewer to be snagged open from road debris like a stick while moving forward.

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's around you more, errant stuff that comes up and hits your bike or other riders? Ask any cycling coach, they won't even let you race with a skewer pointed backwards

    You don't really need that little nut on the valve stem (unless you're set up tubeless). Save yourself the time by not even worrying about it (and its one of those things pure cyclists will judge you on). Also, before you end up changing a flat mid-ride, take your wheel off and bounce the tire. When you learn what a bounce at your preferred psi looks like, you can use an inflator/hand pump without a gauge and still know you've inflated it properly.

    • @41loony
      @41loony 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i stopped putting that nut on my tubes until i was in a "race" situation and had to change my tube. What happened was my valve is limit to being short so when i tried to put air in my tube damn valve went into my rim had to take it appart a second time. i know just bad luck but never again.

    • @stephensjer
      @stephensjer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah...definitely need to have your valve length right!

    • @41loony
      @41loony 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yup was a plan b where having 60mm prestas when you have 58mm rims seemed smarter than buying a 5$ valve extender.....no more no more

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eyeballing psi seems pretty riskay

    • @stephensjer
      @stephensjer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Triathlon Taren totally is, but I don't carry a psi gague in my saddle bag. Last year I flatted 45k into a 100k ride. Filled with my co2 and spent the rest of the ride wondering if I over or under inflated. The bounce test at least will calm the nerves for the rest of the ride.
