I take back every criticism I have of this movie. I love the idea that Disney spent several hundred million dollars just to give our pets a movie they can get immersed in.
It's just amazing how the dog at 0:41 really was responding defensively for Mufasa. Each action was a direct response to Scar's attacks and he even let out a cry when seeing Mufasa falling.
Considering that the pets have the capacity to interpret what's shown on screen, i don't see any reason as to why they wouldn't be able to know it's fake.

Omg! I felt so bad for the pets, I don't know how they can laugh when that sweet creature is going through pain. I would hug them and comfort them. Some people just lack empathy. The laugh really bothered me.

A soul might exist at a level deeper than the level at which empathy is even applicable (the Eastern religions would certainly say as much) so honestly even if they didn't feel empathy, I'd still err on the side of them having souls :)
Just shows how pets can be as emotional as us watching TV. My late dog loved Star Trek battle scenes. My cats past and present would just sleep through TV. But always near or on me.

It is just incredible to see that they react appropriately emotionally. Animals are far better than us, humans and possess intelligence that we do not understand and do not appreciate. They possess emotional intelligence, kindness, loyalty that by far not all people have managed to cultivate.

Cats are as lovable as dogs, And they have emotion to. And honestly. A cat do not please you , as the are not herd animals. Which I love about them. You have to work for the loyalty and love of a cat. Cats are loyal but they still have integrity. I like all animals. but cats are MY BEST FRIEND. :)
That last dog cried more than any of us lot at that scene. Its amazing how as soon as Mufasa falls, the 2nd last dog KNEW instantly and the last dog didn't even have to see the corpse to know either, he was already crying when he saw Simba looking around for Mufasa, they know what happens if you fall from great heights.
Animal planet used to come on every day at 5:30 right around the time I got home. My tuxedo cat, buggybutt, would sit in front of the TV and yowl until I turned it on. He'd sit and watch the whole thing, then he be done....
Poor buddies…. Proof our wee wombats have hearts and souls and can feel just as much as we can on what most consider just human emotion, awww I wanted to hug them!

I had a cat that loved nature documentary's, but one day "Ice Age" came on and he sat 4 feet from the screen and watched the bulk of it.
