No medieval but renaissance dance music but we have tried to make a 'modern interpretation'.
OK - everybody plays this song but we hope you like anyway ;-)

This french traditional song has been published in 1530 by Pierre Attaignant. it's not a medieval song, as you say, but a renaissance song.. It should be fine to give us the right updates. Thank you.
If you ever travel to France, try and stop by Anjou (it's a beautiful region) or Arbois, a nice little town not far from Switzerland. And get a bottle of wine, while you're at it.

@@remilcc Anjou is a historical region. Nowadays, wine-wise, it's known for a sweet rosé (cabernet d'Anjou). Arbois is a town, in historical Burgundy (a region famous for its wines, Bourgogne). They don't have typical burgundian wines, but have some very peculiar local wines (Vin jaune or vin de paille) or the more mild arbois.

Quand l alcool était associée à des moments de partage entre amis et non montré du doigt comme etant le mal....... musique si apaisante ❤❤❤
Il l'est toujours... La différence, c'est que désormais, il est notoire que l'excès d'alcool est éminemment dangereux (en plus d'être éminemment crétin). A l'inverse du tabac industriel, qui lui est nocif quelquesoit la dose, l'alcool n'est pas dangereux si consommé avec modération (comme le dis toute campagne de prévention).
L'alcool n'est pas stigmatisé, en soit, comme un mal. Mais le problème c'est que l'alcool est la boisson de beaucoup de crétin et de dégénéré qui tuent, chaque année, des milliers et des milliers de personne, au mieux eux-même, au pire des innocents.
C'est à cause de ces crétins irresponsables que l'alcool (qui n'est pas totalement innocent non plus) a sa terrible réputation.
C'est simple, les gens seraient moins cons sur leur consommation, les boissons alcoolisés ne serait pas si dangereux.
Le problème, c'est que la culture populaire a trop (et continue) d'ériger l'excès d'alcool comme quelquechose d'amusant, drôle, comique, voir (chez les crétins) quelquechose d'héroïque, de cool, de "badass". (d'où le binge drinking de certains jeunes)
Tant que l'excès d'alcool aura toujours cette image positive qu'il ne mérite pas, les gens continueront d'en abuser avec toutes les conséquences qui vont avec.
Il ne s'agit pas de proscrire l'alcool complétement (façon prohibition qui avait eu lieu aux USA, qui était un échec), ni de le diaboliser (comme le fait l'Islam), mais de faire comprendre définitivement aux cons et aux irresponsable que l'excès d'alcool n'est pas drôle, ni glorieux, ni cool, ni positif en fait (sauf éventuellement à oublier, mais c'est une fausse méthode qui piège et peut tourner rapidement à l'addiction).
Tant que tout cela ... l'alcool sera montré du doigt par beaucoup.
Il ne faut pas néanmoins en vouloir à ceux qui "montre du doigt" l'alcool de manière excessive, en reniant que l'alcool peut être un petit plaisir, si manipuler raisonnement. Ce n'est pas à cause d'eux qu'on en est là, mais bien des idiots et des faibles qui font n'importe quoi avec l'alcool.
Et puis, il vaut quand même mieux une société qui pointe du doigt l'alcool (c'est pas le cas chez nous, objectivement. On sensibilise beaucoup à l'alcool, mais on n'est pas des fous furieux anti-alcool. Ce serait mentir de le dénoncer. Après tout, on est des champions en France de production d'alcool de toute sorte), qu'une société qui est dans le déni de sa dangerosité et de son implication dans beaucoup de mort et d'actes de violence (et donnerait le champs complétement libre aux faibles qui s'alcoolisent à l'excès de manière irresponsable de pourrir, voir anéantir, des vies d'autres personnes).
Pas de véhémence ou de jugement dans ton propos, je précise. :)
Mais au cas où tu condamnerai les gens qui condamnent eux-même l'alcool (ce qui n'est pas forcément ce que dit ton commentaire, mais peut laisser penser), il ne faut pas trop leur en vouloir.
Je suis fils d'un père alcoolique violent ... Je sais mieux que le français moyen le danger et le ravage que peut faire l'alcool dans les mains de gens faible psychologiquement et des idiots... pour eux-même, mais pire encore à leur proches et aux autres...
L'alcool ne doit pas être diabolisé à l'excès, faut savoir faire la part des choses... mais le glorifier ? Encore moins.
Faut garder ça à l'esprit.
Ceux convaincu du contraire n'ont qu'à regarder les chiffres des morts d'accidents de la route causé par un type alcoolisé, ou rendre visite à ces familles détruites à cause d'un membre de la famille alcoolique. Ça ouvre vite les yeux, tristement ...
Enfin bref, pas de morosité et déprime ceci dit.
Juste qu'aux mains des faibles, des irresponsables et des connards (et ils sont nombreux, en France, à être dans l'une de ces 3 catégories, si ce n'est les 3... x) ), l'alcool est une arme dangereuse.

@@Dibipable The Song was published around 1530, the song is certainly earlier, and anyway it is still at the beginnings of the French renaissance, there is no clear breaking point between these 2 periods, and this song is still filled with the musical style of the late Middle age. And about medieval songs, no, there's no many written transcriptions of medieval popular music, the majority of these songs were transmitted orally. This song remains one of the most famous, and the lyrics speaks effectively of wine, which is funny because wine is a very important patrimony for the influence of French culture throughout the world.

I'm sorry, but I do not have any further information about the music of that time period. All I know is that there is a lot of dance music like Bourrées, Branles etc. you can find on the internet.

Such a good song... It has some vibes from other styles and it's perfectly mixed into one song, such as Celtic and Bolivian music
It’s not also bolivian. France is latin with also gauloises (celtic) roots, franc (germanic) roots, norman (viking (Normandie)) roots, phocéennes (Greek of Anatolie (Marseille)) roots, bretonnes (celtic (Bretagne)) roots, moorish roots (Occitanie), phenician roots (Occitanie), alain people roots etc.
@@Dibipable 1 year later hehe.. My friend, i know that already, but i wanted to say that this version of the song reminds me of Bolivian music because of the flute, it has some similarity. And i don't mean the pan-flute, just the normal flute.
Other versions of this song have full medieval vibes, but this one is special because it's different and unique.
To be more precise, not just Bolivia but also other countries from the Andes; Peru, Ecuador, Argentina etc.. It's hard to find a good example of just the normal flute without the pan-flute, but personally i can hear some similarity.

When I sang this, back in Portugal, it was a 4 voice choir piece, with different lyrics. Amazingly, all could be distinguished. Bass was "Bouvons bien, bouvons mes amis..."

All I can tell you from my living there (I'm in Rabat right now) is that, with few rare exceptions, they didn't get any of the best from either France or Deutschland. They got away with a language which is a mixed residue -- and even so they keep cutting it down and killing it -- and with the worse of both: arrogance and superiority complex: "England leads, doesn't follow." Pfff... If only!

I undertook some research about this song. Its history is more complicated than I thought.
1°) In 1529 Pierre Attaingnant published a book of Dances for the lute without lyrics "18 Basses Danses" including "La Magdalena: Basse danse, Recoupe et Tourdion" whose title wear the signature "P.B" (ascribed to Pierre Auguste Blondeau whose is the only known work).
2°) From the melody of this Tourdion, an anonymous composed a four voice version around 1540

3°) In 1540, Guillaume le Heurteur published at Attaingnant's editions a song with lyrics "Quand je bois du vin clairet" quite different compared to the actual lyrics
4°) In 1949, César Geoffray readjusted Le Heurteur’s lyrics.
The title "La Magdalena" would came from the king's François 1st mistress Françoise de Foix de Châteaubriand who was portrayed as Saint Magdalena playing a lute
The original music (La Magdalena: Basse Danse, Tourdion et Recoupe ) was just an instrumental piece without any lyrics included in the first lute book by Pierre Attaingant in 1529/30. The lyrics you sang were added some years later (around 1540/50) by an anonymous too but other versions with the same lyrics and different musics were composed by very well known authors at the same period.
This is a regular encore piece for the chamber choir I sing with in Dublin. Love this arrangement - there seem to be a lot of interesting variations up on utube- Chantons et buvons!
