  • The Common Read is an annual endeavor directed by the English Department at Clemson University. This effort was initiated by the Arts & Humanities Literature (AHL) Committee of the English Department in 2020 as a response to the Black uprisings that occurred that summer to protest a string of unjust police killings of unarmed Black people. The AHL committee directs the general education literature courses (2000-level ENGL) so the Read targets those faculty and their students, but all faculty are encouraged to participate. During this event, Clemson University Writer-in-Residence Desiree C. Bailey reads from her book, responds to moderated questions from Assistant Professor of Poetry Su Cho and answers audience questions.
The AHL Committee thanks our sponsors for all of their help in coordinating this event: the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts, Architecture, and Humanities, the English Department, Global Black Studies, Humanities Hub, the Pearce Center, World Cinema, and the School of Architecture.
