As a teacher, I've seen it plenty. Students think the TI calculator should "just know" what you mean the same way that iPhone "magically" corrects your texting spelling mistakes. The negative symbol and subtraction symbol just confuse some people...
I was trying to solve a system on math xl for over an hour and was never getting the exact decimal answer until I did it the way you suggested. Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you!!! Super helpful! I just spent 4 hours on the same homework problem and no matter what I do I cannot master the Gauss-Jordan elimination method for solving equations in matrices. This is sooo much simpler! Any as for whoever made fun of you for differentiating between the minus and the negative keys, I spent a week thinking I had a defective calculator because I couldn't get a valid line graph function because I was using the minus key instead of the negative. Very Helpful!
Yes, that's a confusing thing, I agree. To delete a matrix, you actually go into the "MEM" (memory) menu and go into #2, "Mem Mgmt / Del..." then choose #5 matrix and you will see a listing of all your matrices. Select, and press the DEL key to delete.
oh my goodness! you just saved me soooo much time and stress. Like you probably will never know how much you helped me for my math quiz and test. thank you =D Did it very well btw.
Be careful, make sure when doing practice or something you know how to do this as well without a calculator, because if something goes wrong during the ACT's or something you at least have a backup plan to go to. Just saying.
omg i can finally do chapter 5 in my math book the easy way!! my lame professor didn't know how to even work it on calculator so he made us do it the hard way O_O all he said was if we know how to do it on the calc to go ahead on the test it would be okay -.- YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER SIR!!
Nancy De Castiel Hey that's really great. Let me guess- the three equations & three unknows. Those are killer unless you're a Jedi Master with algebra- or know how to use matrices to do it. Awesome!
Hi Fabiola, thanks for watching my video! Yes, you CAN access the matrix menu faster. On newer TI-84s, such the color, and TI-84s with OS version 2.54 or newer, the ALPHA-F3 will pop up the Matrix menu. You can directly enter matrices for quick calculations. However, if it's a large matrix, you should stick with the regular method shown in the video. Good luck with everything!
I ran into a problem with using my TI-84. How do we scroll down on a matrix in the answer on the TI-84? I can only see 6 rows of my 7-row matrix. Help?
So what if you have matrices A, B, C, and D with orders 2x3, 2x3, 3x2, and 2x2, repetitively, and are trying to find the orders of operations, such as: A(2B) D(A-3B) (BC-D)A
I did not see what buttons you were pressing to do addition and multiplication of matrices so I am still confused...and I have a test on this on Monday and a final exam in my college algebra class on the 12th, so I need the info. Thanks!
Can I also calculate something like f(x1,x2) = x^2-4xy+x-2xy^2+y-4 Im searching for the Hess-Matrix of A at (2 over 0). What is a11? Now do I control that ?!
Hi, can I save a previous matrix result for a further operation? I'll clue you thru my problem. I have matrix A and B. First I need to mutiply A x transposed(A). Lets call the result as C. Then I have to multiply B x transposed(A). Lets call this D. Finally i need to multiply D x inverse(C). I want to now if I can store C and D in the TI memory, without having to write down the numbers and type again
Sort of. You would have to write a program to do formula operations, which DOES take work, but it is the enter-once-do-many-times kind of thing you're looking for. I will soon have a program posted that can do determinants and inverses and great stuff like that.
When you show people how to solve the systems of equation around the 5:50 mark, instead of having a 3 X3 matrix and then 3X1 matrix, you could've just created a 3X4 matrix and just throw in all the coefficients of all the terms and your 4th column would've been the constants of the equation. Then you could've used rref(A) and it would give it to you. It's still a good vid with all the other info.
What do I do when I keep getting ERR: dim mistmatch and if I try to augment a matrix I get Err: Argument. Im able to inverse them properly and change to a fraction but not these two things. :(
What are you putting into your calculator? I am guessing you are trying to multiply matrices. When multiplying matrices with m rows and n columns, the columns of the second have to be the same as the rows of the first. For example, you can't multiply a 3x2 matrix by a 4x1 matrix, but you could multiply a 3x4 matrix by a 4x1 matrix because there are 4 columns in the second matrix and 4 rows in the second matrix.
Thank you so much, this video really simplified what tries to be taught in my textbook about augmented matrix. Can I use a 4*3 matrix in place of combining matrix 2 & 3 in matrix C?
Thanks for the video, but there were some steps where you were just quickly pressing buttons without explanation. This made it a little hard to follow at times.
If you multiply matrix A by a column vector, in this case a 3x1 matrix with entries (x, y, z) which we will call C, you'll notice that AxC=B, therefore to find the solution of the system, that is to say, the entries of matrix C, we can treat this expression like a typical algebra problem. Dividing both sides by A is the same as multiplying by the inverse, so we get: (A^-1)x(A)x(C) = (A^-1)(B) IxC = (A^-1)(B) , where I is the identity matrix C = (A^-1)(B) and that is how multiplying the inverse of matrix A by matrix B yields the solution to our system :D
Not really. You can put a value inside a variable, like, set K to one, like this, 1→K, and then when entering variable into a matrix, type in the K. Then the 1 will appear. It's not very useful and probably not what you are after. I bet you're asking if you can enter a variable into a matrix and solve? Then, sorry to say- no that won't work. And the Numeric Algebra Solver won't accept matrices; it will give you an error of Data Type meaning it doesn't like non-real numbers.
Nacho Eraso , Sorry, the TI-84 does NOT support complex numbers. I wish it did. The TI-Nspire, the CAS version, will handle complex numbers. Also the HP-15C if you like that kind of thing. :-)
Holy crap I've had this old sucker for five years and I barely learned how to matrix on it, thanks!
This is great! I think a lot of students will benefit from this tutorial.
5:20 - solving system with three variables.
Thanks for the tutorial. Good stuff.
As a teacher, I've seen it plenty. Students think the TI calculator should "just know" what you mean the same way that iPhone "magically" corrects your texting spelling mistakes. The negative symbol and subtraction symbol just confuse some people...
You just helped me with my midterms tremendously! Thank you so much!
I shared this video with my classmates! :)
i have a freakin TBI and you rock; i've spent 4 weeks working on how to find the augmented matricies; THANK YOU
I was trying to solve a system on math xl for over an hour and was never getting the exact decimal answer until I did it the way you suggested. Thanks for sharing it.
You just restored my faith in humanity, thank you sir.

just tried to do this on paper for a good hour DX. You're a king

Great video Andrew. You explained this concept so much easier and more clearly than my math text book did. Thanks.
Thank you so much! My math teacher has a very weird way of solving it that requires excessive writing and steps. This helps sooo much.
12 years later and I’m still using this
I am forever learning new things on my TI84+, thank you for the rgreat vid.
awesome----u really know how to teach-----pls more of every thing!!!
oh my goodness! you just saved me soooo much time and stress. Like you probably will never know how much you helped me for my math quiz and test. thank you =D Did it very well btw.
Thank you for explaining in 10 minutes what my professor failed to explain in 5 videos.
Thank you for this video, I am not very good at algebra so I try to find alternative ways on my calculator and most of your videos help me a bunch
So much easier to understand than my math professor! Thank you so much!!
Thank you a lot Andrew Borne. May God bless you abundantly.
That was Great!!! Been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks! learned in 10 mins!! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. Your a blessing!!!! Can not understand my math instructor. So glad you shared this....
So helpful! This is going to make my math midterm so much easier! Thanks for sharing.
Be careful, make sure when doing practice or something you know how to do this as well without a calculator, because if something goes wrong during the ACT's or something you at least have a backup plan to go to. Just saying.
Awesome explanation, very clear and immensely helpful! Thanks!
Thank you i just came back from doing a test and id like to thank you for this video it really helped alot!
omg i can finally do chapter 5 in my math book the easy way!! my lame professor didn't know how to even work it on calculator so he made us do it the hard way O_O all he said was if we know how to do it on the calc to go ahead on the test it would be okay -.- YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER SIR!!

Andrew Borne YES. i absolutely hated it and i managed to pass the final too so thanks so much!
Thanks g saved me some time on my test!
having issues with imaginary numbers in the matrices.. will it not work? long hand algebra during a EE test is no bueno..
In the official manual for the ti 83 says that only real numbers are allowed in the matrices for this calculator ti 83
Thank you so much for posting this!! Very clear and easy to understand!!!
Concise and clear, thank you very much!
Can we enter 10x10 matrix on TI-84+ ? I want to buy it for Adjustment Computation and Error Theory and Parameter Estimation.
Hey. Does anyone know how to convert the matrix values to an exact fraction? Help is appreciated.
thnx for making this video, greatly appreciated, got stuck on my hw man
Do you know if we can access to a shortcut menu for matrices on ti 84 plus? It will make things easier and faster...
Hi Fabiola, thanks for watching my video! Yes, you CAN access the matrix menu faster. Is it possible to enter a formula into a matrix, such that you only need to enter the matrix one time and can feed the variables new values?
how do i multiply matrix a and matrix b but subtract matrix c on the ti-84 plus?
thanks for augment/enter key, but which key said RAM clear[good-bye, stored matrices?]
You saved my life. THANK YOU!!!
What are the key strokes for storing the augmented matrix in "C"?
M M matrix > math> augment(7) > [A], [B]> sto > matrix C. Sto is above on
Thanks for the video, it really helped.
Omg.. You just helped me a lot in my math homework. :O Thanks & keep up the great work!
how do you get the A matrix my itself? before adding it to the B?
How can i find a determinant when the member of a matrix are complex
I need help with the Pivot in given simplex tableau operation ???
Can I multiply two matrices A and B and store a result as a matrix C to use it in another calculation
Thank you so much you saved me so much time
Thank you soooo much. You dont even know whow much you helped me! Me, a french student ! :)
How do you delete matrices A, B, and C after youre done? I've pressed delete and clear when under "EDIT" and "NAMES" to no avail.
Very nice work. Thank you!!
hi im thinking about buying calculator like this, but i need it for big matrices abot 19x16 can it handle matrix like this ??
jks380 , Yes, it can. But are you sure this is the right tool to do your huge matrix math? It may be easier to use software on a computer.
Your video is excellent. Thank you very much
I ran into a problem with using my TI-84. How do we scroll down on a matrix in the answer on the TI-84? I can only see 6 rows of my 7-row matrix. Help?
thanks a ton man, really helped me out in class
Thank you very much from Japan.
What program are you using I want to get it too

This Definetly helped ALOT!
Thanks for the help. It helped a lot :) Very easy to follow!
what if the last equation only has 2 terms? do you sub in 0 for the non existent term?

Desde Argentina: Muchas Gracias! Es de utilidad.
de nada. :-)
Thank you very much, you are a good teacher!
Thank you so much, this video really simplified what tries to be taught in my textbook about augmented matrix. Can I use a 4*3 matrix in place of combining matrix 2 & 3 in matrix C?
+Diane Skerrett Thank you! And yes, you can put in a maxtrix of any size. You don't need to combine two smaller ones to make an augmented matrix.
Thank you very much ! you helped me out with this video
OH MY GOSHHHHHHH!!!! Thank you so much! This video helped me so much! I figured out my 10 points extra credit! YAY! :D
can i do this on ti-83 or ti-84?
thank you sooooo much. i really appreciate it. could you also do some more videos on tricky things. thanks
which means that it is inconsistent right?
Thanks for the video, but there were some steps where you were just quickly pressing buttons without explanation. This made it a little hard to follow at times.
can this calculator invert a 4X4 matrix?
how do i clear the matrixes!!
you have this sotware?
You are a life saver!!
I really appreciate this bro
No sweat, bro. Take care.
Why does the inverse of matrix A times matrix B yield the results to the system of equations?
If you multiply matrix A by a column vector, in this case a 3x1 matrix with entries (x, y, z) which we will call C, you'll notice that AxC=B, therefore to find the solution of the system, that is to say, the entries of matrix C, we can treat this expression like a typical algebra problem. Dividing both sides by A is the same as multiplying by the inverse, so we get:
(A^-1)x(A)x(C) = (A^-1)(B)
IxC = (A^-1)(B) , where I is the identity matrix
C = (A^-1)(B)
and that is how multiplying the inverse of matrix A by matrix B yields the solution to our system :D
Can you enter variables in the matrix (x)?

up to how many dimensions can it solve?
sneha timilsena I’m not sure but I’ve seen 10x10
hey man umm what does it mean when i'm at the end and it goes like: " ERR: SINGULAR MAT" ? please respond iin the next 24 hours. thanks :D
nice video! you can also use Linear Algebra Toolkit and it will show u how to work the problems step by step!!! :)
This is great, very helpful
Very Clear. Good Job!!
This helps tremendously. I was trying to do this longhand and it wasn't happening!
That error message results when you try to take an inverse of a matrix which has a determinant of zero, which you cannot do.
I'm trying to solve a 3 equations 3 unknowns with fractions but it keeps on giving me 0 for the answer.
How can you do the same but with complex numbers?
Nacho Eraso , Sorry, the TI-84 does NOT support complex numbers. I wish it did. The TI-Nspire, the CAS version, will handle complex numbers. Also the HP-15C if you like that kind of thing. :-)
Nacho Eraso You could represent the complex number a+bi as the matrix with rows [a b] and [-b a].
Could you just enter a 3 by 4 rather than combining two?
+Ivan Tchesnokov likely too late, but yes you can.
Great , helped me a wicked lot.
great video, very clear, u should go through all of the matrix math functions. :)
THANK YOU! I was literally about to smash my calculator with a hammer.
+steve You're welcome, Steve. Good luck on your studies!
Thank you!! This was very helpful.
Thank you sir. That was most helpful.
Why go through the process of augmenting it when you could have just made matrix A a 3 x 4 and just rref it from there?
You are correct. I wanted to show you that the calculator could augment if you needed to.
