Ed Pink has built engines for drag racing in the heyday of NHRA competition, Cosworth Indy Car engines, road race, USAC sprint cars, and many more. With a career spanning over 60 years across multiple facets of motorsports finding success in EVERY one of them...there is nobody truly like Ed out there. He has been in this very building since 1965 and now the city of Los Angeles has annexed the property to build a bus terminal for the 2028 Olympics. They will be forced to leave at an unknown date and the building will be torn down. Gone forever. Ed is 92 years old and still remembers everything. In this video he walks us through his legendary racing engine facility for what will be a digital time capsule of the walls where his legacy was built.

If his race shop is classified as a historic site, I believe the state can't take the land for redevelopment. Someone should get the ball rolling to make his shop a historic site so he can't be forced to relocate.

That's basically when the state comes in, and tells you to f off, throws you pennies on the dollar for your land, and sends you on your way. All while seeming to think that what they did was a good thing, and they were so generous for giving you anything. I highly doubt that he neither had a choice, or was "paid handsomely"

I think the enormity of what's been done there and the enormity of it won't be there anymore struck him and he had to gather his thoughts. The reality probably brought a tear to his eyes too, as it should.

This is a complete shame to lose such a historical part of racing just for the Olympics that will be abandoned a few few years after they’re done.

Ed Pink is a living legend. That place should be preserved as a historic building. Pretty cool he's still alive and building engines. And now he's gotta figure out how to move all that shit. Pretty sad day. Dude has had my respect for many decades.
Ed's last statement at the end made me realize how devastating Eminent Domaine can be on hard working responsible taxpayers. The eviction from homes and businesses to build temporary structures for the Olympics is a total scam. Within 10 years the blight will take over and homeless people will be camped out at the closed politicians fustercluck.

Designating Pinks place as a historic landmark is a great idea considering socal's drag racing history. Maybe that should be the approach to saving the place. I think Ed Pink already sold the business to somebody else though. I met Ed at Thunderbird Raceway in Arizona in 1981. He was with somebodies funny car, I don't remember who, and I was just a lone race fan/spectator. He took out time to talk to me even though I really didn't want to bother him. Much appreciation for Ed Pink.
Forgot the Olympics. It's not right a government can come in and just take the property. Ed and his shop are a national treasure. Thanks for another great video of racing history. I would love to sit down with Ed and talk with him for hours about all the engines he developed and racing he has been a part of. Wow a 917 engine, I bet that is rare as hens teeth.

From a 60 year old that grew up in New Zealand that loved drag racing and hot Rodding to living here in South Carolina man I thank you for this stuff. Man is a legend in my world.
Watching Ed portray his life by traversing through this old shop does two things. It brings on a profound respect for such a knowledgeable man of such epic proportions. And it reminds me of how fast our lives pass is by. I hope my mind is still as sharp as Ed’s at 92.

so ed pink has a team of high paying jobs like mechanics machinist's engineer's and the city is trading it for service jobs?? 🤔🤦🏻♂ that probably pay under 10USD pre-hour ( and im not sure there steady either aka temporary and next week to the homeless line ) did i get this right? or did i miss something? im not against the olympics or public transportation but isn't this a bad trade if the shop/business closes up for good?
i know ed's name from 426 hemi history and or a high dollar option for rebuilding my 440 or 426 hemi engine for my charger and a parts supplier ect

So my first drag race I attended (I was 14 years old) was a funny car meet at Connecticut dragway in 1978. One of my favorite pictures I took while I was there was of a HEMI valve cover in a funny car with the Ed Pink logo on the valve cover. I felt honored that I actually was in the presence of an actual Ed Pink engine! This video was a fantastic in that I was able to see the shop an the man who has been a legend to me for more than 40 years. It is a crime that that facility is being sacrificed for the Olympics. I have the same welder in my shop! Mine is a Chemetron, which bought the P&H business and still sold welders under the P&H brand.
Thanks for making a video of Ed, I’ve been reading about him in hot rod magazines since I was a kid. I think his shop is way more important than the Olympics.

Most places don't, not just the USA. I follow Taiwan TH-camrs. A couple are big on history of the country. One is a transportation buff and another is just a history buff. They show what was and now what is. It seems like every 20 years there's a mass upheaval and out with the old and in with the new. The history buff guy is in his 60s. He did a video last year about where he grew up. Showed photos. We'd call it a slum. Tiny brick house, no windows. That location is now a traffic island under an elevated highway with a Costco across the street. During one of their COVID lockdowns he was doing videos about the Japanese occupation period from the late 1800s to 1945. Showed the then and now. I told him he ought to bring all that to schools to show kids. He told me that the kids don't care and all they do is have their faces pressed into their phones.

Thank you guys for producing this video. This was so very important to get out to the public to see this gentlemens tragedy unfolding. What an appauling situation. Ed is such a gentlemen. A beautiful person with so much knowledge and a big part of U.S . racing history. Its all still in him. He still has the passion. What a sad situation. The world as we know it is consuming it's self. Dam! This really effected me and I am not sure what can be done. I just became a bus hater. I hope the large corporates like Edelbrock, holley, summit racing need to get together and try to crush this bus station plan. Its just so wrong.

Mark- yep, 72 and rode my stingray down beeline highway in elementary school around 15 miles outside Mesa when they did the AHRA Winternationals there. The sounds and smells I still remember. Met Dino Don when he won with a front engine car. A lot of history between then and now, and Ed was and is a huge part of it.

Ed Pink got paid when sold the business to Tom Malloy in 2008. He is a consultant to the company now.

I grew up in the LA/Orange County area with a bifrucated family, part law enforcement part street racers and growing up in the 70's Ed Pink was a living legend along with Keith Black, his shop and him are way more important and will be legendary long after the Olympics will ever be, it is a travesty what California is doing and turning his shop as well as all the other establishments in the area into friggin bus stops is just a horrible waste.

It's funny those old Battle Ship Gray machines I remember being in awe of (and the guys running them always measuring and fine tuning everything) when I was young and going into different shops and factories, now everything is white cabinets with glass doors run by computers.

It would be amazing to spend hours just listening to the life stories Ed could tell. Its a shame a building will be destroyed for something as insignificant as a bus station for a one off event that few care about.

1969 - 1971 I attended the Ford Automotive training program through L.A. Schools. Ed Pink, FOMOCO and others were sponsors for the city wide program. I met Ed very briefly at the graduation banquet. I actually grew up very few miles away from his shop.
The city should be ashamed.

I too grew up less than 2 miles away from here in the '50s and '60s. A couple blocks from here was the old GM plant where the Camaro and Firebirds were assembled. Now it's a Home Depot and strip mall, progress... They will do anything to get rid of any internal combustion engine manufacture in California.

@@wayned1807 I lived on Balboa between Mission and Chatsworth. Half our neighbors worked at the that assembly plant. The valley I grew up in doesn’t exist any longer.
@@CWO3-uscg I lived my first 15 years in Panorama City by Chase Street Elementary. We used to ride our bikes over to that plant and play by the RR tracks not far from where Ed Pink has his shop now. Moved to Mission Hills, just east of Sepulveda and south of Chatsworth. Went to Sepulveda JHS and Monroe HS, class of '66. The Valley was a great place to have grown up in. We left California in 1983 when was saw the writing on the wall. I can't imagine raising a family the way it is now.
Wish someone would step in and make this building a historic location So they can't tear it down. So much racing history with in those walls.

while watching, i went to the thumbtacked ID card on the wall of my shop "Ed Pink Racing Team - Life Time Member #297". In 1974 it came with a "Think Pink" t-shirt. I was 12 years old.....

So glade you are documenting all these legends in the automotive industry. Ed Pink is such a icon in the racing industry everyone knows who or has heard of him. I've actually had the honor years ago tho to meet this legend. Coolest and extremely knowledgeable man and wish there were more people like him in this industry. It's a shame that LA is doing what there doing to such a historic place amongst everything else historic they tear down. I say we all sigh a petition to help keep this legendary place alive and everyone's job's as well. But really enjoying yall going are and doing videos on these guy's that changed racing history.

Ed reminds me of my grandfather who I just lost at 90. He was also a car guy but definitely not on the technical end like Ed. We are losing these guys that have a wealth of knowledge that will go with them. Ed’s legacy will always be alive long after he’s gone. Hopefully there will be someone to continue his work with his knowledge long after he’s gone. Hats off to you sir.

This man is an unbelievable icon in motor sports. It’s a shame that this historic race shop is to be torn down and made into a bus depot for the olympics. Sometimes this type of rejuvenation is needed, but not in this case. Still a current viable operation. Thanks to Mitchell, Logan, and Lake Speed jr for this.

OMG when I saw the title on this video I almost went and bought tickets out to Cali. I have a friend who lives near Huntingdon beach and I was going to offer my helping hand even though I am still recovering from getting run over by a ford F350 on my 1957 Harley Panhead. Ed is a Legend. I am so happy that even though it seems as if he is kind of retiring he is still so vibrant. What a wonderful man and family! Gob Bless you Ed and I hope to see you again in the not near future. You are and have been an inspiration to almost every kid who looked at a race car and got the bug.

Mister Ed Pink. This is the best podcast in my opinion that you have ever done. Just amazing the way he gets around at 92, and how much sharp he is. Genius doesn't come close to describe MISTER ED PINK, and his awesome shop. The machinery, the pictures, and the paneling. Everything is in place and this is where it should stay. Shame on the city for destroying this for bus stops 😢.

My uncle raced in Indy Billy Vukovich the 2nd and also that gurney eagle head motor they’re rare. my grandpa had a blown one stuffed in his 32 and won the 81 Oakland roadster show with it. It’s pretty wicked to start up

I can remember *SEEING* many of the cars that were running Ed Pink engines, when a good buddy of mine and myself would drive from Camarillo, California to Lion's Dragstrip in Long Beach, California and also the Pomona Winter Nationals! What a *LEGACY* Ed Pink has built! And *WHAT* a memory at 91/92 years old! Thanks to Mayor Garcetti for *DESTROYING* this wonderful monument to the racing world!

I absolutely love your in-depth interviews/videos of what i consider hallowed ground of racing; Petty Enterprises and now, Ed Pink's facility. Simply outstanding! As a kid, I was buying Popular Hot Rodding, Car Craft, Hot Rod and followed drag racing from afar. Took to liking the Don Schumacher Stardust 1970 Cuda FC; just a beautifully built and detailed funny car, powered by Ed's hemi's. The top drag racers either ran Keith Black power or Ed Pink power. For me, Ed is a big part of our greatest generation of drag racing heroes and this interview shows he's still completely on top of his game. What an engineering talent, from building the power that won the NHRA US Nationals to providing the engines for the fastest cars on the road today, in 2022. Long may Ed run!

What an amazing icon. He hasn't been part of the shop for yrs, yet can crack off the names of the current (and past) employees like he was there yesterday. I have trouble remembering what I had for lunch yesterday and I'm 30 yrs younger.

What a story and it will be a damn shame once the shop is gone, so much history will be gone forever! Ed is in amazing shape for his age!!!!!
My brothers nickname was Ed in high school from 73 to 77 and after do to him building everyone's race cars including his own . He was 5 years older than I was and from the 5th grade I was pulling motors and building them in my moms garage with my older brothers . Eventually I was given the name of Ed Jr. after Ed Pink by all the older guys that nicknamed my brother Ed . Looking back at Ed Pinks contribution to car racing and engine building as well as his influence in racing I really consider it a privilege to have had that nickname as a young man .
I grew up a mile or so from this place. As kids we would ride our bicycles and mini bikes by the railroad tracks behind this building. I knew what they did there as my family was into racing. Every now and then If we were lucky we could hear an engine on the dyno. Also not far from there was a company called Sandmsster. They built off road race cars and would test them alongside the tracks. As kids we really got a kick watching them go by. Sandmsster turned into Mckenzies off road, still in business today.That was a fantastic video show casing a legend while bringing back some childhood memories. Thank you.
I've always been a car guy. Growing up in the 70s, if you were lucky enough to get a motor built by Ed back then nobody would race you because they already knew that they were going to lose. Absolutely a v8 building GOD!!! One of the best engine builders ever!!!

this is old history that guy was a legend in hi performance motors, I used to work in Van Nye's and saw his shop many times, you got a real treat going on tour there. The valley is full of history on tracks and hot rods. Enjoy
