Right at the end of the interview ….”Once I slowed down-That’s when it happened.” I’m a shut in due to illness, in a small town with few musicians and even fewer opportunities to play with folks and my greatest insights wasn’t a scale, a chord formula or speed….it was time, economy and listening, not to what I wanted to hear but to where sound lead me. I slowed down and would hear the harmonic content of the note and that would lead me to new places. I began to hear what sound had to teach me. It’s a bit like learning the geography of music, the map of what you are capable of, giving insight for exploring past that. I really loved this in the moment revelation.
Man he's on point with his history of guitar legends, all those artist he's speaking on have paved the way for him and so many others in the industry and most importantly Jubu himself!!
Thats a bass players curse. They just couldnt stop playing while someones talking. Doesnt matter where! on stage, rehersals, bathroom, library.. until you tell them “bruh” we need to hear each other
Big fan of his soulful playing ever since when he was around the Sacramento scene in the 90s when I was working with Robert Brookins and Wayman Tisdale.
Jubu I love ur style of playing uncle bobby was called the thumper he did play for the legendary pilgrim Jubilees which was my dad clay uncle Cleve , Major,n Ben. U r something special my brother keep doing ur thang
Excellent stuff 💥💥 What knowledge these gifted people have to share. Thank you so much 🥰 Jubu the BOMB 💥 Thanks for the great insight. You are a master. 🙏🙏🇺🇸
JuBu has established himself clearly as a voice to aspiring young guitar players most definitely! Howard Carroll did not need a Band but could carry the program, the group and the song on his back with no effort at all. I play too but have never seen a guy who was everything just on the guitar. Carroll was the man!!!!!
You have no idea how this Blessed me. As a guitar player I always want to stay teachable. So I can learn right. God bless you Mr. Smith. Thank you Jesus.
Did a gospel project for The Triumph Family, back in the 90s with Jubu. He was playing a Chet Atkinson Nylon string guitar. He sounded just as good, back then.
Some guys have so much vibe you only have to listen to them strum a chord or play a few notes on their instruments before you recognize their extraordinary musicianship. This guy, is one of those guys.
Well said. As a drummer I've learned it's more important to know music besides just the drum parts. Understand chord structure and simple song structure like what is the chorus? what is the bridge? where's the turnaround after the bridge? Understanding those simple elementary things will help you in communication with your band tremendously and they will appreciate it. Plus some of my major influences on the drums are not drummers such as Jaco Pastorius... James Brown... Jimi... Like you said step outside of your Box and sponge.
I told this young guy the other day that wanted to learn how to play guitar to learn quartet and he looked at me crazy. I didn't even explain why. I just let him have it. Quartet music will get you right on the guitar especially because they had to fill a lot of time with just a bass and a guitar. They had to carry the rhythm and lead.
Please people when you have a great musician speaking... trust me they heard many people playing before you, and they will give you a chance to play. However listen to them every word don't play.
If not mistaken that's his brother on bass and he is a genius himself... I understand what you saying but at same time he is on same level and can teach a thing or two too.
Still waiting for the knowledge to drop out of his hand… xD Liked the suggestions on inversions and finding influences beyond your instrument of choice to develop ‘your best you’. Ty
That guy playing the bass over his explanation is every garage band rehearsal I've been to.
ha, drives me crazy!
hahaha I was thinking the same thing, there's always that guy...
"He's a noodler."--if Seinfeld played an instrument in a band
Haha exactly what i thought. It’s that guy.
@@troborobo-1 I feel you bro. Same here.

Beautifully stated and profoundly true not just about music but living life.

Spot on.
Where you at? Maybe we can jam
Jubu has a great speaking voice. You can hear his authenticity and humility for the craft. Love you man ...

I love how dude in the back stopped whatever he was doing on his phone when Jubu started gettin in on that guitar.
Music is so powerful. Shame so many people are glued to a phone screen today...

"Once you develop that you can go anywhere" - That's the key.. every legend has their own voice.
This guy is a genius. Never heard guitar like that before and it’s amazing.
This is my musical Brother!! Proud to stand on stage with him every night with Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. Plus he's one truly comical Kat!!!😂
You are one heck of a bass player man.

Jubu is a Legend!
Indeed one of the greatest to do it. A pioneer for us modern-day guitarists.
Such a beautiful way to resolve that progression. Mindblowing melodic sense...
Eddie Hazel, Ernie,Isley,Shuggie Otis,Albert Collins, Ronny Drayton
Steve Cropper, Catfish Collins, SRV, T Bone Walker, Johnny Marr,
Albert King
Great list.
The talent lies in your hands and your ears! There’s a whole shit ton of music out there - too much so to be closed minded.
Great words Jubu!
Jubu played that Howard Carol lick on Tweet's "Cigarettes". So killer.
I'm also happy they let the man speak.
I caught that too...piano player here..lol
💯
@@LarryOnKeys What's funny is most guitarists that play this style listen to pianist.
He created that “Tony Tone Toni” sound.

I listen to saxophone and harmonica players to learn blues guitar. Wind instruments have an amazing way of playing the blues in a personal way
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
That's why this man is a Legend. Yet he is still underrated as all real musicians are.
I don't know him but I could listen to him all day. Sweet guitar, wonder what that bridge p/u is...
