  • I read somewhere that a bad amplifier can't be made with a 300B tube (valve).
    This is my attempt with the standard scheme but with toroidal transformers (Toroidy) and with a slight modification of the scheme. I added the PS anti-noise part (see Aikido SE output stage).

    I am curious to the benefits of using a toroidal transformer over the laminated plate type. Seems like you should eliminate much hum or line noise from using this kind of transformer but makes me wonder why more people don't use it. Some of the most high end output transformers still use laminated plate type. I am considering trying toroidal but exercise some caution due to the expense. I always felt Toroidal transformers are the best and most efficient. I may build this amp.

    Svaka čast, pravi ste znalac i u teorijskom i praktičnom smislu.

    This is absolutely beautiful. I've been wanting to build an amplifier and stumbled across yours. Love the look and the attention to detail in the build. I would like to try to recreate this but with a different finish on the wood, black powder coating on the aluminum sheet, and black knobs. Could you help me with the specs on the power transformer? If I was to have this made, would I only need to specify my line voltage and the secondary voltages, or is there more to it than that? Would you mind sharing whatever specs I would need to have one built for myself with a 120V primary? Any help is very much appreciated.

  • @MisterBigwolf
    @MisterBigwolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    May you list nominal voltages and currents for each secondary winding in power toroid, diameter of wire (or something except 10H 250mA) for choke toroid, and most important - parameters for output toroids please? Exactly what you ordered from factory. I need to order toroids, but I don't know parameters. You may list them on google drive too.

    Absolutely beautiful build Robert. I love the CNC work on the cabinet and of course the layout of the electronic components. I built a kit into a Pink Floyd lunchbox and it came out great! It was not nearly as complex as your build, and it uses a pcb board but works and sounds great with my old JBL speakers. I rebuilt an old iPod which contains my entire music collection and the setup sounds great to my ears. I'm sure some hifi purists would critique my system to death but it sounds wonderful to me and that is all that matters lol. Like you, electronics are a hobby I use to amuse myself. I don't need to keep customers (or critics) happy lol. I got the kit from Tube Depot in the U.S. If anyone is interested. I believe I paid around $400 for all of the components.

    • @ReferenceFidelityComponents
      @ReferenceFidelityComponents ปีที่แล้ว

      Just one point of note as a loudspeaker engineer and manufacturer…SE amps, especially low powered SET amps have not got enough damping factor for any conventional 8 ohm or less speaker. Too high an output impedance. For bass control you should look to a Class AB PP design employing a lot of GNF for low output impedance. SET amps are fine for higher impedance speakers such as compression driver horn speakers but not suited to conventional speakers. People confuse power and bandwidth for control but all that matters is an amplifiers output impedance (NOT the speaker taps at 4 or 8 ohms but the actual impedance of the output transformer’s windings which typically for such an SE amp might be 2 to 3 ohms…very low damping factor as a result). I apoteciate though that this is an OTL so output impedance will be less= better control.

    On a 300B PSE, 14-15 Watts is plenty! As far as sensitive speakers, do have any recommendations that are budget priced?

    • @RobertZovko
      @RobertZovko  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for the specific speaker recommendation, I would leave it to someone else, it is important that the speakers have a sensitivity of over 90 db (/ W / m).
      The higher the sensitivity, the less power the system needs for a given acoustical output. For example if your system uses 90dB speakers and 20 Watts per channel and fills a room to satisfying levels, then with 93dB speakers one would need only 10 Watts, etc.

    So clean and tidy ... I only wonder about the current and speakers - I'm in love for thirty years now with my custom JM Lab ( Focal later) kit speakers that are very recently driven by a first edition Audio Innovations series 500 ... By the way what would be the price for it and have you maybe got any plans for a mono ? ( Why most makers when using such beautiful material for the plinth or box - never go a small step further - just getting rid of knife sharp edges and instead spend some extra wood in inspiring curves ? Ya know music after all is about liquid forms - not sharp edges ... No one ever asked for such form ? Just like LP 12 - what a sound - what a persistently sober and negatively inspiring any audiophile who has also a minimum design requirements from a hi end product sitting on the Olympic throne of sound for decades .. I can also think of so many rosewoods with colors and grain that would make myself and many more empty our pockets on the spot ... Serious about their sound equipment - doesn't necessarily mean looking Puritans dressed the part ..! Just looking out my window to the rosewoods i bought and taking back to Europe ( hopefully) to give the long promised second face lift to the long ago aesthetically upgraded Series 500. Will it be the Tigerwood - Purplheart - the hardest Lignum Vitae - or the impossibly rich Grenàdillo with the amazing variations and the super contrasting sapwood in spotty White with surreal Black grain for an impression of two color contrasting woods ? We spend thousands in search for the "right" sound - but then we HAVE to do with mediocre designs ? Think Black Palm with it's so rough grain matched to some Baboon Ebony trims maybe selector and power buttons cased in aN Ebony outer skin .. Each item could - should ( it's not restricting ) be one of - customization and personalization wise ... Simple things that would make a difference ... Sorry - I'm affected from the virus since a kid - and it's getting worse with advancing in the third age .. Yes it's about taking you there the quest in audiophilia - but why have just one sense satisfied ??? Be greedy - demand more ! Why not ? Ain't that hard and costs not that much - more ...

In this my remark should be taken not as negative criticism but rather a positive counter suggestion ! I also indeed would be interested to listen if marketed .. You want a bit of self sarcasm ? Since '97 been losing my hearing - losing ... lost better ... So apart from weirdly somehow finding joy in endertaining wife and friends with some great music - and leaving to me imagination and electronics replace the loss- while try to satisfy all remaining senses the best I can .... I had a SET 300B amplifier and I feel in my opinion that it has better sound quality than any other tube amp. But it only put out maybe 8 watts. So I sold it because it lacked enough power to fill the room like my 20 watt 6L6GC push pull. I want to build a 300B SET amplifier but with more power so I will use 2 of the 300B’s in Parallel as you mentioned to me. I am not familiar with the PSE 300B, so I will explore the internet and look for that schematic. You mentioned better speakers. Do you have recommendations for good speakers?

    • @RobertZovko
      @RobertZovko  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PSE = Parallel SE
      I wouldn’t recommend a specific scheme to you because I haven’t tested it myself, but you can find it along with the scheme and comments from others who have tested it.
      I note that with two 300Bs again you won’t get 20W maybe 14-15W.
      I didn’t say better speakers than more sensitive ones. It means higher utilization of invested power.

    Hello Robert. I recently came across your youtube channel after looking for DIY videos of 300b tube amplifiers. Seeing your video and meticulous work has inspired me to want to build my own amplifier. Its been over 20 years since I last studied physics / electronics so while most of the terms are familiar, its like seeing them through a foggy veil!
    I was wondering if you could share the schematics of this build as a LTspice model so that I can actually study voltage / current across the circuit to better understand the same?
    Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge on the build. I do hope I can do justice to your amazing design.

    Torroidal transformers hate standing DC current. It makes absolutely no sense to use them in an SE amplifier
    They are great in PP amps however. This is just physics I'm afraid. That's why they buzz horrendously if there is the slightest DC on the mains.

    Maybe it is the architect in both of us ... but I truly appreciate the beauty of your layout and your build quality ... Is the lighted power switch from Blue Sea Systems ??? I've been searching for it online and the only ones I have found are only rated for 12 V. .

      the switch has two voltage designations, one is for the supply voltage of the LED and the other is the voltage designation of the switch.

    You have placed all components parallel to the chassis edge. I do this myself but many builders run them at angles.

    • @RobertZovko
      @RobertZovko  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is important that the DC and AC wires be at right angles or as far apart as possible. The same goes for components of different channels ... I personally like that all components are aligned in the same direction, this is for visual appearance only, but I follow the rules above.

    Hi Robert, very nice build. Love the toroidal transformers!
    I built a very similar one a while ago, but I cheated and used a PCB to mount all the components (from Douk Audio) and "normal" Hammond transformers - 378X and two 1630SEA
    I also used a different heater regulator that Rod Coleman designed which was a great improvement over the LM1084 regulator the original design was using.
    I especially like the vented chassis plates you used to mount the tube bases - where did you get those from?

      I wish to APOLOGIZE my comment which is actually unfair. The subjet is rather technical so you may consider that even your "not enviable english" could be rather suffisant to explain your very beautifull 300B amp if you explain why. You may also use subtitles , even asking someone on the web to translate your idea. This for me the point : you expose an IDEA and it would be great to listen ou read the MAN.

Quesion: are you totall satisfied with toroial transformers or would you have gone back to the client c ones?)

    • @RobertZovko
