Children of Paradise is from the 1940's and part of it was shot during the Nazi occupation of France. The story of how the movie was made is just as fascinating as the movie itself.
Perry reminds me of the Conspiracy A-Go-Go dude in Slacker. Having said that I’ve been really enjoying y’alls videos. Just discovered them a few days ago and have been playing catch up. Y’all are the epitome of film fanatics.
My criterion addiction about 10 years was even worse. I remember once spending the last of my paycheck, halfway through the work week, on a stack of CC Blu-ray’s. Luckily had a full tank of gas and could eat at work lol
The Human Condition is 100% An Absolute Must Buy. It is a World War II Epic and is a masterpiece Yes, it is a 10 hour long film, but it is broken into three separate parts. With each film essentially acting as Acts 1,2,3 for the overarching story that is The Human Condition. It is without a doubt one of the best films in the entirety of the Criterion Collection. Do not skip out on this epic. You would not regret blind buying it. But in case if you wanted to know, it's from the same director (Masaki Kobayashi) responsible for Harakiri, Kwaidan, and several other films in the collection in some form or another.
The three of you have tremendous chemistry and such an infectious love of film. I’m always inspired by your Criterion hauls and you help introduce me to so many great films. Keep up the positivity toward film, each other, and life. 🙂 I highly recommend the Melvin Van Pebbles set! My favorite set Criterion has released in a while.
Hey, at least it went into the Maybe's 😂 Allright, The Human Condition is a Trilogy of Three Films so you can watch it one by one instead of 9 hours as a whole. Each film has an average Letterboxd score of 4.4 ! The next haul is coming… Oh, and if you want to get into some of director Kobayashi’s other work, I strongly recommend Hara-Kiri. It also has the same lead actor in Tatsuja Nakadai. It has a Letterboxd score of 4.6 ( Top 20 Highest Rated ).
Last night I picked up 1. Eyes with out a face 2. Blue velvet 3. Shallow grave 4. Come and see 5. Pans labyrinth 6. Life is sweet 7. Portrait of a lady on fire 8.Amous Perros 9. I want to hold your hand 10. The fisher king
@@TheMisfitPond awww yeah. The new girl I’m talking to pans labyrinth is her favorite movie, and I’ve never seen it so I said fuck it I’ll pick it up. So we’re gonna watch it and see how it goes!!! Keep up the great work Carlos!!! Can’t wait to see the next haul!!! I’m definitely getting breaking the waves
This is absolutely lovely. What a great video, and what charming people. No airs, no graces, no pretentions... just an infectious enthusiasm for quality films which have sometimes not bubbled up to the surface of the mainstream. Keep on keeping on.
Glad you got the Three Colors Trilogy! I already loved Kieslowski's Double Life of Veronique before going in, but Three Colors cemented him for me as one of the greatest filmmakers in Cinema. Out of the trilogy, Blue is gut-wrenching and starkly gorgeous, but the vibrant capstone Red remains my favorite of the saga.
Three Colors is a FANTASTIC trilogy and an incredible Criterion set. I love the loose connections that tie them together and the statements they all make about the power of human connection. Just picked up Keislowski's Dekalog this sale myself! (Also if you don't buy Blue Velvet in the next haul I think I'll actually lose my mind)
You guys should check out Woman Under the Influence by John Cassavetes. Especially Perry, I think he would love it. Especially the performance of Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk. I also recommend Hiroshima Mon Amour by Alan Resnais.
You have to watch all 3 of the Three Colours Trilogy, especially "Red" because of the ending. I don't want to give it away but in the end of the film ALL 3 stories connect.
The Human Condition Trilogy is easily one of the best trilogies out there that nobody ever talks about!!! Seriously it is a must watch. Also nice haul as usual. I've recently picked up Code Unknown and Love & Basketball on Amazon. I seriously wish Criterion would put more animated films in the collection like Angel's Egg, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, The Wolf House, and Isle of Dogs. Granted I already own all these films in my collection but a Criterion update would be neat.
Fassbinder was incredibly prolific. He directed a ton of movies and TV shows even though he died in his 30s. Ali Fear Eats the Soul is probably my favorite of his. Bitter Tears of Petra Kant is close though. The BRD trilogy is good as is Fox. He made a 15 or so hour TV series called Berlin Alexanderplatz that is also great.
Once upon a time in China martial arts film starring jet li is coming on criterion it said to be released by November 16 before it ends worth buying it if you’re into martial art films and plus it’s a classic made jet li a huge star
We actually had a movie night for it last night in the discord chat. It was really late at night after I got off work so I fell asleep halfway through but so far from what I’ve seen I thought it was pretty good
"Children of Paradise" ("Les Enfants du Paradis") was actually released in 1945, and was filmed in France during the Nazi occupation. One of the actors who plays an informer was ACTUALLY a Nazi informer and had to be re-cast. It was also rumored that star Arletty had an affair with a high-ranking Nazi.
Yea I misspoke on its date of release but did not know about the historical background on it regarding the nazi occupation. That is absolutely insane. Thanks for providing that insight
Did I hear that you guys live close to Boston? I’m on the Cape, looking forward to the July sale at the Hyannis B&N. Have you seen all the films you’ve collected yet? Is your goal to collect them all?
I have seen almost all of the films in my collection. I still need to see 24 Frames, Throne of Blood, Police Story 2, 10 more Bergman films in the boxset, 10 more Fellini films in his boxset, and 2 more Wong Kar Wai films in his boxset. We don't live anywhere near Boston. I don't plan on collecting all of the criterions, because there are some films in the collection that I'm not crazy about like The Night Porter, Eating Raoul, and Salo.
At this rate you at least gotta get Easy Rider or something to ease Dennis’s soul. Man’s gonna rise from the dead to come after you for this level of disrespect 😂
New sub here, these haul videos are a real pleasure to watch. Ya'll have great taste. Living way up here in Canada with some serious Barnes & Noble envy... 2 things: Have either of you seen Embrace Of The Serpent? Also, Hey Perry, did you see those Online Ceramics - The Lighthouse t-shirts?
Awesome! Glad to have you a new kinolord in our community! I have not seen embrace the serpent but I’ve heard great things about it for over a year now
@@thomasegelhoff3115 yea for real. It was a soft maybe to begin with so it didn’t really stand a chance. Lol such an amazing film though. If I didn’t own a blu ray copy of it already it would’ve been a must
Do y'all buy Criterions any other month's via Amazon? Perry acts surprised titles are available. Also he is getting excited to spend $20 as if the price tag reads "10 for $1!"

I'd love to see a video of Perry's blu-ray collection.
We’re planning a full collection video next month 😎

Seconding! Both (well all four) films are masterpieces.
Thanks for the recommendation! Have seen Hara-Kiri and it is a masterpiece; very refreshing to see a critique of the samurai code.
"The Human Condition" is actually in six parts, and was released two parts at a time as double-features in Japan.
