    I read that the meat probes are bimetalic probes. These types of probes don't do well for ambient air readings. They are too sensitive and with convection sensing it's not constant enough to be accurate. The rtd reaction time is a slower reaction sensor for the purpose of sensing air temps. Bimetalic probes being used in a solid, conduction sensing are more accurate. The solid acts as a buffer for micro temperature swells. To get a temp to the sensor on a bimetalic probe it gets absorbed through the platinum then there's a temperature reaction of 2 dissimilar metals that bend different. That twist usually rotates a device that sends a signal to the board. As heat expels off of the metal probe it is also lowering the probes temp because it's to fast with convection heat transfer. If that's confusing. Think of opening your oven door when it's set at 400°. You will feel that heat hit your face but it won't burn you. Now microwave a bowl of water to boiling which would be 212° and imagine that dumping on your face. It would burn like hell. That's the difference between convection heat and conduction heat transfer.
    In all, the reason your device was correct was because it was made for ambient temps and the reason the meat one was off was because it's designed for meat.
    The ice test is best for the probe A and B. You can also do boiling water test but that can change depending on your altitude. You can google your city's altitude then put it in a altitude boiling water calculator and see what water boils at in the altitude you're cooking in.

      agree. the slopes and the repeatability, as well as the scan time of readings have a large part of sensing. other wise too sensitive the temp starts to cycle. I'd say the PID is assuming an error rate and adjusting for it (its a square root function)

    Thanks for the video - I'm actually looking at this grill for purchase. One suggestion on your biscuit test, It took you 1 min 22 sec to place all biscuits on the grill and then the biscuits you took off first were the ones that went on last. So there was at least 1:45 to 2 minutes difference between time on the grill. Might not have changed much, but that is a really good test to run. Would just suggest you create a more equal time on the grill. Once again - thanks for the review.

    The pit probe appears to be on the far left of the cook chamber in a vertical mount. Your test probe is in the middle of the grill which is pretty close to right over the burn pot, that could easily give different readings from the “actual “ temp and probe A.

    It would be interesting to swap the probes into the other's port...i.e., take the RT probe and plug it into the maveric and vise/versa. This would help isolate if the probe disparity was specific to the probe or the controller. Not sure if the RT probe was calibrated before as well as that could be the cause for the swing in reading.

    Just because your thermometer is dead-on at what you would reasonably believe is freezing, doesn't mean it'll be dead on everywhere else.
    Try it in boiling water as well. At sea level, water boils at 212. It will not go any higher unless you pressurize or change altitude (changes pressure).

  • @jon944
    @jon944 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From a HVAC/R tech, when you calibrate with ice water you should set you temps around 33-35 degrees. The more ice and less water the closer to 33 degrees you’ll be. You’ll never attain a true 32 degrees with ice water no matter what serv-safe tried to tell you. I use crushed ice packed in a glass with just enough water to saturate the ice and I calibrate to 33 degrees. For what its worth.

I do notice mine cooks a little hotter too towards the exhaust side too as well as at the edges, totally normal since that's where the most heat comes from. Your probe test isn't quite an accurate test. The Rec Tec probe is reading on the left outside edge of the cook box which will have the first reading of a heat increase because it's not blocked by the drip pan. Your External temp device is reading above the center of the grill with the drip pan deflecting the heat. To be an accurate test you need to locate the temp probes in the same exact spot.
    The Rec Tec Meat probes need to be calibrated before using. Rec Tec has provided youtube video on how to calibrate them on the RT-700
    If you put the biscuits outside of the edge of the drip pan on the grates at the back and front they will cook hotter.

    • @luvysfatlife
      @luvysfatlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wayne Springer I appreciate your comments on this video. I mentioned several times the “set” probe was “6-8” higher and would be different than the middle. The two middle probes (Rec Tec) and Maverick are within an inch of each other dead center. Those two should be very close in Temp and were not. I mentioned in the video this was a straight out of box test.....so others would not check temp first and just start cooking. I thought personally the biggest test was pretty accurate and the side with the draft would be hotter. Thank you for the feedback.

      Ok, If the probes from Rec-Tec are that far off out of the box Rec-Tec should be the one replacing them not the customer?

      Brad Helfrich to be honest I don’t use them. I use my own that I’ve cooked with for many years. I do plan on creating another video calibration them and then comparing once again after calibration. Thank you for watching. I wanted to create this video for new users so they didn’t waste money and check accuracy first.

    Calibrate the probes. They have a video on how to calibrate the probes.

      Thank you for the comment.
      I plan on calibrating them. This was a straight out of the box test to show others you may need to calibrate and what they may show. Odd how the internal probe doesn’t require calibrating but the meat probes do.
      Maybe the internal probe requires as well? I haven’t used mine long enough to see if that becomes an issue.
      Thank you again for the comments.

      Luvy's FAT Life are you going to make brisket? Curious to see how you think a brisket would be. I made two already. Second came out really good

      Hello Larry, definitely doing briskets. Those are one of my favorite meats to smoke. I just smoked a couple prior to purchasing the Rec Tec......still have some vacuum sealed in the freezer. I have a feeling the Bull is going to kill it with brisket and burnt ends.
