I absolutely agree with you on this. So far it’s looking like the Russian invasion of Ukraine is the biggest event of 2022 by far. Unless of course it turns for the worst which hopefully it won’t.
2009 - Michael Jackson's death threw the whole world into a frenzy for months, facebook google bing Microsoft youtube and countless other major platforms crashed due to the amount of traffic, the number of tributes he had gotten and the countless articles and stories even going on for the other half of the year was insane
Yeah honestly I’m sure it was a tough decision to choose for 2008 and 2009. The recession really changed things and Michael Jackson’s death was the only thing talked about for the rest of 2009. I know obama getting elected was very significant but when I was a kid, all everyone talked about in 2009 was Michael Jackson.
I’ll never forget the stock market crash of 2008. My dad lost his job of 21 years (1988-2009) & we lived off his unemployment & under-the-table construction work. It was the most depressing time of my childhood. I was born in 1993 & I was about to get my license. It was supposed to be a happy time of my life, but I was so so sad for my dad but we eventually got back on our feet. It took a couple years, but dad got back on his feet. But I’ll never ever forget that time in my life. We almost lost our home, but didn’t because dad was being paid under-the-table by his construction boss, who offered him that job out of pure pity. My dad was not one to break laws & work/get paid illegally (off the books) but desperate times called for desperate measures. It is still to this day the only time I can think of my dad breaking his moral code as an honest hardworking man.
I'm from Chile and the thing most people here still remember from 2010 is the earthquake that hit us in February 27th, because unlike the miners rescue, it was something that affected to all of us and not just something we saw on television

@@Tully_23_32 to be fair it's news that affected the majority of the world. Around 2010 Chile only had a population of 17 million (less than 1 percent of the global population and around 1/4th of 1 percent I think) so their suffering is just a blur in the timeline.
I'm a Connecticut resident. Working nights in 2012 and waking up to news about the sandy hook shooting was absolutely shocking and really hit me. Little kids losing their lives at the hand of a psycho brought me to tears
I am also a Connecticut resident (born and raised here) and I lived in Newtown as a young kid 1994 -1996. My mother had just gotten divorced from my dad and was dating a man who had a daughter my same age. I only have one biological brother, so it was cool having a sister for that period of time. We lived together for a year and half, but we lost touch after our parents broke up. When the Sandy Hook tragedy happened (I went to the other elementary called Middlegate) I went on Facebook and found my "sister". We chatted for a while, and then decided that we should reunite and bring some good vibes/karma to Newtown. It was a wonderful reunion, and we both paid our respects and prayed for the children.
And then it hits you this was something our great grandparents and kids went through on a weekly back between 1929 and 1950s, even till the 60s/70s depending on nationality and race
Congrats on yet another American list - once again you prove an immense amount of closedness to the world outside North America. Watching documentaries about 9/11 during High School and the plane crashing into the South Tower struck me in the core like a tank. R.I.P to all of the innocent people, including Policemen and Firefighters who died during 9/11. May they rest in peace. 😔
I was in the 8th grade when the Twin Towers fell but I didn't see the footage until I got home that day. CNN show the image of the plane hitting multiple times to the point I had to shut the TV off
I had just arrived in Hawaii for my undergraduate degree. It was a Tuesday morning, I didn't have any classes on Tuesday. My neighbor came in and said the US was under attack. When the airports were closed, the thought hit me that I'm stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. I had to find someone who had a phone (cell phones weren't common then) to call my parents to find out what was going on on the mainland. I was in the commons with the rest of the campus watching in horror for the next 10 hours. Unreal. Unreal.
I’ll never forget September 11th. I was in 3rd grade my mom picked me up at 3 pm from school. I had no clue what had happen until I got home and we had the news on all night.
I remember every single one of these. One of personal note was 2008. I had JUST started working as a secretary for a financial advisor that June; a few months later I thought that I would have to look for another job, as we were a very small company (just my boss and me); but I watched in awe as my boss kept his cool and consoled our clients. While, yes, they lost some money, due to my boss' quick thinking they didn't lose as much as they could have. I still work for him, and I'll always remember that. Once, recently, it came up in conversation, and he confessed to me that he was scared spitless at the time!
I was 15 when the crash happend. I had just got and started my first job in a boating business. My dad was lucky he did not lose his job but he went from full time to part time. He got a new job one year later.
2009, Michael Jackson died. It was one of the biggest celebrity deaths in the world people were devastated especially since he was two weeks away from performing THIS IS IT. His funeral was viewed by many and it’s still upsetting remembering his death to this day. No matter what anyone says, he will always be the king of pop.
I agree. His death completely shook the freaking earth to its core. It was the most shocking and cruel celebrity death of them all! I will always love Michael Jackson forever!
As a dude born in 1995, it always made me sad that we JUST missed remembering a pre 9/11 world when I talk to older family members about what society was like before it…
Barack Obama 2009 presidential inauguration, still fills my eyes with tears and my heart with love. I was proud to witness the biggest event in my life time so far!
In my community we lost a local high school graduate on the Virginia Tech campus that day. She was a wonderful girl and in memory of her life, our schools sent each child home with a small tree to plant. It was a very sad time for our community.
I was 7 years old when 9/11 happened. Saw that footage on our tv while eating a piece because that was my birthday. I include the victims of 9/11 tragedy to my prayers every year i celebrate my birthday.
@@CollectorsCorner777 it still bothers me that people still blame the federal government for so many things that could have been avoided by the local mayor alone . Just the arrogance to not allow bus's to be used to evacuate alone was a travesty.
9/11 will always be the biggest for me. I was only 6 and I still remember everything that day. The way the teachers were reacting and how school just stopped.
I think it's fair to say that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is the biggest news story of 2022. On BBC News in the UK, for a month after the attack, the news didn't show anything else
i think this is a very white american perspective… these tragedies have surely affected the world on unimaginable scales. but just a generation ago many black people still dealt with excruciating segregation, and in other areas like the middle east for example it’s a consensus that millennials and gen Z had it the easiest because any generation before us grew up in constant civil and international wars.
As a Brit, I'd say this list is a bit too focused on American news. The 7/7 bombings in London in 2005 should really be up there, they're only not because this list is valuing American news more than anywhere else
I was 3 years old when the Space Shuttle thing happened. I remember watching that unfold on TV from the barstools in my kitchen. My sister fell off of a barstool and had to get stitches.
I still remember hearing about 911 here in the uk, it must have happened around 1:45pm uk time. I was at school in my last lesson of the day in music, I didn't hear about it until my mum said when she picked me up, I couldn't believe it. When we got home it was on every news channel from all the American news channels to bbc, sky, itv, seeing those towers fall on live tv was awful
Braxton Pass yeah billions in damages and numerous deaths shit was crazy to see, ngl the first day of the riots I was tripping snd seeing all the news coverage was not good for me during that time 🤣
I live in Southern California, and we've been dealing with wildfires for a while. The sad thing is is that they always come around in the late Summer/Fall, and it's fueled by all this greenery that finally comes around in the Spring/early Summer. Once we finally start to get rid of all the dead shrubbery, it comes back because of wildfires and what they do.
Seeing just how difficult this decades have been almost makes my cry. And the video doesnt talk about a lot that happened, Georgia in 2008, the Islamic State, Yemen, the drug war victims in mexico, the peace talks in colombia, worldwide protests in late 2019... A lot of shit happened
@@benjaminmetzger6858 absolutely nothing on the terrorist attacks in europe and the refugee crisis of 2015-16 surprised me, those 2 years on the list were indeed very usa centered
Chile’s 2010 earthquake was also huge, no one expected a big earthquake only 6 years after 2004’s Indonesia earthquake, but it’s true that the incident in the Gulf of Mexico incident was also huge. Good video
September 11, 2001 is honestly one of the saddest stories in existence. Edit: Stop trying to correct me by saying stuff like "well the Holocaust was sadder" and "Have you forgot about the..." I'm not ranking anything here, I'm simply saying that September 11 is sad. Get over yourselves.
i wouldn't go that far unless you are solely counting just in the U.S. If not I'm guessing you forgot about the Holocaust, pretty sure that one takes the cake or WW2 as a whole.
damn this brings back memories, I turn 25 this year and this just bring back all those moments that were so big as child but are often forgotten as time goes by.
Pluto's demotion in 2006 doesn't seem nearly as big as North Korea's nuclear testing. They fired missiles over the Sea of Japan, and detonated a nuclear device in their mountains! I remember everyone in the world being on edge.
The most memorable news event since 2000 for me was COVID-19 pandemic. Seriously it was a major outbreak from China that spread everywhere in the world that led millions of people died.🤒☠️
That is a very good point. A lot of stereotyping has occurred from wars and bad days in the world. Even right now, Ukraine and Russian citizens (not government/political people) are getting stereotyped and ridiculed by a lot of people. The governments/political people are the ones that should be stereotyped because they are encouraging violence/attacks

Well I was born in 2001, I was only a couple months old when 9/11 happened. I wasn’t in Manhattan but I was in a close borough with my mom. My mom remembers my grandma frantically calling her from Mexico and asking if we were okay. Thankfully we were fine but you can see how much 9/11 still impacts New York and it’s people. Years later one of my moms bosses had a son who was a fire fighter working on 9/11 who had died because of the toxic dust. Today as a college student, I walk past the 9/11 memorial every time I go to school and there’s not a day where there’s not at least one person there. To this day we have a moment of silence every September 11th. I was only a baby when it happened but hearing all the stories from people around me really makes me feel what they went through. I also recently went to watch the Broadway show “Come From Away” which is based around 9/11 and it is beautiful, I definitely sobbed while watching it.
Me too I was in Middle School as well but I didn't see the planes actually hit the building I only saw the aftermath in 7th period. I remember crying about how many casualties there might have been which was undetermined at the time of course
We’ve only been in the 2000’s for 22 years and there’s already so much that has gone on. It’s crazy how our grandchildren and future generations are going to read about this in the history books
I’d change the topic for 2012 to Hurricane “Superstorm” Sandy. Y’all also need to add an honorable mention of the New Horizon flyby of Pluto in 2015. As for 2021, a mention of the Afghanistan withdrawal would also be important.
It really didnt mean anything tbh. They got in and realized they cant do anything and just goofed around like the idiots they are. It wasnt a “danger to democracy”.
This clip brings back memories. I was born in 1998 so I was just 4 when 9/11 happened. I remember my dad telling me that planes flew into buildings and getting mad at me when I said that was cool. I also remember the columbia space crash. That was the first time I learned about air friction with solid bodies .
@@tay2944 You do realize that scientifically 3 years of age is when on average people start building cognitive ability, correct? This has been proven by the American Physiological Association and Child Development Organization. Also, your memory must be pathetic. I know many people who could remember stuff when they were three, such as a 1959 Boomer remembering the JFK assassination. I'm born in 1992 and I can tell you that I have a 1998 sister who does remember 911.
My top ones were September 11th, 2001 when Al-Qaeda attacked the United States, and May 1, 2011 when Seal Team Six killed Osama Bin Laden. Everything came full circle.
Not to forget that the US millitary didn’t want to show any DNA test of the body nor any photos… there’s a chance that He paid his way out, so he could hide somewhere on the planet for the rest of his life
September 11th will undoubtedly be the worst in my lifetime. I remember it all to well and I watch a lot of footage now in my adult years. It still is fresh in my mind. I hope that no generations to come will ever have to experience anything like that.
I really appreciate the fact you chose the earthquake in Japan over the death of an evil monster. May he be lost in history as the insignificance that he is.
@@debashismishra6765 it’s not about the death toll. My comment is more on the fact that the tragedy and lose of the people in Japan is highlighted over the mere mention of a monster, as it should.
So in 06, we get a train bombing in Mumbai that kills over 200, a stampede during a festival in Mecca that kills well over 300, and the biggest breaking news is……Pluto being demoted? Pretty sure they just waited for the regular broadcast to announce that. (Also I grew up learning that there were nine planets in OUR solar system, but an unknown number of other planets outside of it.)
I was watching this out loud in my kitchen and my dad walked into the room as the va tech shooting came up. He froze and stared before I quickly spoke up that it’s an old report. Good lord, this day and age he was probably like “ not another”
Protests with a face mask in 2020 will always be stained in my mind. 2 situations simultaneously happening in the same year. Unreal. 2020 one of the worst years of all time. So much uncertainty
Im not kidding when I say this. About a year into Trump’s Presidency I had a dream/ premonition that Pence would be the downfall of Trump entirely because of Trump’s actions. I’m honestly to this day am still surprised that this dream somewhat came true.
Pence refused to overturn the election results when they were certifying Biden’s win, Trump claimed that Pence had the power to do that as Vice President (which he technically can’t do) Trump was & still is to this day furious with him . It also didn’t help that the mob was planning on capturing on hanging Mike Pence for his so called “traitorous” actions that Trump encouraged and surely enjoyed watching this unfold at the White House.
If the attacks of 9/11 wasn’t featured on this list for 2001, idk what would’ve made the list. The deaths of so many innocent people in Twin Towers and the buildings collapsing from airplane collision was literally devastating! RIP to them all 🙏🙏
Bin Laden thought that was what eye for an eye is having lost a pupil to the CIA who was not Al Qaeda but a student wishing to learn more about the religion
Miles to go? Meaning what? You're saying we're just as racist as we were decades ago... Despite the fact Obama won twice, including in, normally, Red States... And African-Americans, as well as anyone of any race, have more rights and privileges than ever...? Your logic and explanation should be fun... Most of the stories that listed “while this was happening” before sharing the story chosen for each year, were much larger stories than the ones ultimately chosen 😂

I was in 9th grade when it happened. We watched it in every class at school that day and did nothing else.
Unreal. Unreal.

I feel old, I was 21 when 9/11 occurred.
I was 3 when it happened. I remember I was in pre k at the time getting picked up by my parents.

Im not kidding when I say this. About a year into Trump’s Presidency I had a dream/ premonition that Pence would be the downfall of Trump entirely because of Trump’s actions.
I’m honestly to this day am still surprised that this dream somewhat came true.
I don't see how Mike Pence was in any way the downfall of trump.
Pence refused to overturn the election results when they were certifying Biden’s win, Trump claimed that Pence had the power to do that as Vice President (which he technically can’t do)
Trump was & still is to this day furious with him . It also didn’t help that the mob was planning on capturing on hanging Mike Pence for his so called “traitorous” actions that Trump encouraged and surely enjoyed watching this unfold at the White House.
