Hi everybody. A while back, I sent a radio to my buddy, David Tipton "Australia's own radio restore genius," Check out Part 1 and 2, and 3 of David's video on this 1942 RCA Model: 26BP. . @@Buzz1151 I began watching David Tipton about 6 months after he started posting videos. He has come a long way in the hobby since then, to the point where now, he does a first-class restoration job, tackling virtually any problem that comes along. He has definitely found his niche!
@@richardshort4587 hi richard...it's still in the box unopened, till I make a video on it...I have 1 more project scheduled after my current one. so, probably in 3 or 4 months, we shall see what David sent....great question, thanks 🍺🍺
I actually like the tale of this ghost! Well, your creativity! Poor Dickel, I was hoping that maybe he found himself a new friend 😆 Can always offer some "Limeade" to the ghost if she comes back! Restoring & repairing radios sure is an interesting world, but I'm afraid that if I ever attempted to fiddle around with all of those wires & electricity, I'd be seeing some ghosts!
Great intro Buzz, a Buzz in the box! 😄 a lot of editing work there. The golden capacitors look amazing and finding that broken wire, fantastic. I wonder how many times it went back to the repair shop for that? Did you hear the one about Captain Kirk setting course to the sun, Spock is alarmed and says "we will burn up Captain" Kirk relies, "nah, we'll go at night"! Thanks for the pinned comment Buzz 👍🍻🍻
@@DavidTipton101 Good joke David! Your demeanor seems so even-keel, the venting of your own brand of humor always catches me off-guard. I do very much appreciate it though, this world needs to laugh more to help de-stress. Fortunately, my wife has an almost identical sense of humor, which I have greatly enjoyed over the years.
Sorry I am late to the party again. Was laid up with the gout in my left foot. I had hurt my foot giving a midget a swift kick in his posterior for jaywalking in front of the liquor store and he blocked my way in getting into said store for some free sniffs of the libations. But I digress. That was brilliant of Dickel sucking the spirit into the movie camera. Now you just have to drop that camera deep in the Pacific Ocean never to be seen again. Seeing that lime juice made be thirsty for a Margarita so now I have to make another trip to the package store after I finish watching! That 100 dollar bull didn't crinkle right. It sounded a little too crinkly . Loook at those buggerheads at the factory putting that broken wire antenna coil in there. It took your genius to fix that 94 year problemo. Now it truly playes better than new. What an accomplishment. You are the best in the west and probably also east of the Rockies also. I do love the music selections Buzz. Say hi to Dickel for me. He's quite a Gnome. PS I love those music selections, it truly brings back memories.

Great job, Old Buzz. Finding that loose wire inside the can was great! BTW, old caps had a liquid inside the can. Speaking of liquids, surely you deserve a good beer! Enjoy it!
I love how they just screwed all the components to the back panel. probably maximized the use of the space they had at the time. later when capacitors got smaller they could put them all under the chassis. That Twilight Zone episode scared me way back in 1961 when that kid turned the man into a jack-in-the-box...it was fun to try to re-create that short scene with me ! haha🍺🍺
Brilliant Buzz.. Those copper cans still full of electrolyte.. Unbelievable.. You then did an inspired job of preserving them along with all the other cap cans. Can't wait for episode three..
wow, I haven't seen a Zero bar in 50 years!!! You continue to educate with these videos. Not that it's going to make me a radio technician, but I'm kinda understanding those electrical diagrams, with your help. It's a bit scary, since I've always avoided anything to do with electrical up to now. I never knew hundred dollar bills were so commonly used as insulation in radios! 😉😆
Hi Buzz. Great job on the cabinet and the radio chassis . Has always its a treat to watch you and Dickel ,my friend. I liked and shared. All my very best to you and yours. Hope you had a great 4th of July.
Another great video Buzz. Interesting find on that blown wire. Yes watched Dave's Video earlier it will be nice to see how he refurbishes the case to that radio. Its great how all you radio restores work together on you tube. Wish we had this Knowledge shearing back in 1974 when I started out as a Signal & Telegraph engineer.
@@Buzz1151 Living in the US, I don't know if I could ever get used to the frequency scale of the dial having only call signs. What looks at first like a 5 band radio, is actually just a standard MW AM broadcast receiver. On the plus side, nearly every Aussie radio has a power transformer, which I really like. Growing up in Florida in the 1960's, and since concrete floors were used in homes, I was always getting brutal shocks from those hot chassis on the AC/DC sets.
The bezel on that radio reminds me of the bottle openers on the old soda vending machines with the bottles inside. Maybe you can open a beer with it. Cheers!
A few weeks ago,i restored a german nordmende Carmen 57,i have restuffed the electrolytic capacitor too, because the aluminium can Was labeled nordmende too,it has 3x 50uF 350 volts inside, i replaced them with 3x 47uF 400 volt capacitors, and proper insulation of the wiring. Works perfect.

Those copper caps are really beautiful. I've never seen them before. I hope you clear lacquered them after doing such a good job polishing them up to keep them from tarnishing. Also, better stop feeding junk food to Dickel. He obviously had too much and turned into a gnome.
Thanks Buzz for another interesting video. I have seen copper canned electrolytics once. A 1932 Philco grandfather clock I restored in 1973 had these, although they were mounted above the chassis, like electrolytics in the mid 1930's. I left them in place, disconnected them, shined them up, and coated them with varnish. What a surprise, your caps were still filled with electrolyte! The cabinet strip and refinish came out really well without any major problems to tackle! Strange how the nail heads are visible. I guess that omission was part of the cost cutting. Those two RF amp stages are strange, not to mention the missing electrical connection and how did it pass Test? The plate circuit shows a 50 pF capacitor connected to the RF transformer primary. For a tunable circuit, that part should not be there, it will cause a narrow, fixed frequency bandpass. I didn't see any sign of the 50 pF capacitor when you had the RF transformer out. The RF transformers were super cheap, not wound properly for RF, that is part of your poor sensitivity problem.
@@Buzz1151 Thanks Buzz for your response. I remember seeing in your video, the order of disassembly to get to the desired transformer but, didn't see the 50 pF cap in the video, perhaps I missed it? I am wondering if this particular radio is an example of the "fly by night" radio manufacturers that popped up and subsequently died a few years later, fueled by the insatiable demand for radios at that point in time? With demand being so high, proper radio performance probably became secondary due to competition of price and availability. If the radio could pick up a few stations on the band, it may have been been considered "working acceptably", even with the glaring dead spots in sensitivity.
Buzz, love the video! What's the title of the musical theme in the opening skit? I know I've heard it and it's a classic but I can't remember what it is. Thanks!
