  • The Castle ruins are all that remain of a fortified tower house called a Pele Tower, which was completed in 1410 by Sir Ralph Eure’s workers. He was a wealthy landowner who had married into the local de Aton family.
    In the 13th and 14th centuries, the north of England was regularly attacked by Scottish clans or English Border Reiver families. After the Battle of Bannockburn, triumphant Scots reached as far south as Yorkshire and almost certainly attacked the 13th century house on the Ayton Castle site.
    At the turn of the 15th century, Sir Ralph Eure, a notable figure from Northumberland, married Katherine de Aton and set about building an improved building which would be more effective against any future Scottish raids.
    He based his design on a Pele (pronounced peel) Tower which was a common defensive dwelling of the day along the Scottish Borders and in his native Northumberland, but rarely built this far south.
    This video is a light-hearted visit to the former peel type tower, and we wanted to make this type of video at the time.

    A really interesting explore what i did notice on the corner that you pointed out the stone block work is like a stone veneer or cladding. I do see it a lot on some of the old buildings i visit where the corners have had this cladding added to give the illusion of huge stone blocks. I have had a look on google earth as well as looking at you drone footage and i would bet there is a lot more to this place just below the surface.

      @ALWResearchTeam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, there was a lot of hard ground areas where it felt like there was buried structures or remains just under the surface. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    My dads last name is Ayton we have been told that our roots come from Scotland and that our family used to have a big pink castle we thought it wasn’t true because he’s Jamaican but our DNA test says we are Scottish and I now see it wasn’t a tall tale
