  • Our in-house downhill bike needed a fresh set of rubber, so we took the oppurtunity to install a new CushCore and a Maxxis Assegai Double Down tire! This is an un-edited look at how we install fresh tires and CushCore in our shop.

    Pure wizardry confirmed. First, I broke a couple new levers without these techniques and spent over 4 hours reaching intense frustration levels, muscle failure in arms and hands, and no tire mounted... Watched this then successfully installed CushCore with a Schwalbe MM Super Downhill in under 10 min with ONE plastic lever. $35 for the a 32gal trashcan is the best investment I've made for my garage bike shop.

      It's even easier with the Cush Core tire levers. I'm surprised Jesse isn't using those here. The trick is to put the curved part tip upwards when pushing the bead in. I've ruined rim tapes and then have to take everything apart again 😠

    Pro tip - after the initial pump up with the valve core removed and those ever so satisfying 'pops' of the beads seating, DO NOT remove your pump when it is at the 6 O'clock position. Excuse me while I shower off a spray of sealant off of my entire body. 😄👍😎

      I mean if you bead in tubeless tires with the sealent already in you are already a maniac, you bead it in, make sure you have at least somewhat of a seal and THEN the sealent follows.

    • @jt8251
      @jt8251 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also get away with the initial air-up with the valve core installed. The CushCore helps push the bead into place a little easier than with a traditional tubliss set-up, where having the valve stem removed helps ensure a quick blast of air to pop the bead on.

    It was relatively easy to install a new cushcore. But trying the same process and "hacks" when changing a tyre with a two-year-old cushcore was a nightmare. When the insert doesn't sit as tightly on the rim anymore, it's so easy to push it off the wheel when pushing the tyre bead inside. I had to start the whole process from scratch three times.
    There needs to be a separate tutorial for changing a tyre on a wheel.

    Took me 2 plus hours with most of the time was spent on the rear as it was an asymmetrical rim and I started on the wrong side (note to self...read FAQ). Also had to go to the bike shop as getting the final bit of the rear bead was a two man job using the big metal Pedros pro tire tool. Front was surprisingly easy when I did it the right way. Was able to also kill my Pedro milk jug lever which I've had for years and years...I had always thought it indestructible.

    • @cushcore690
      @cushcore690 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the info Eric. This is where the bead dropper can help, but it's definitely not mandatory. On the second side you may have to use a bit more force to drop the bead and essentially push the other bead out of the channel. The other key is to take a couple bites with the tire lever where the final part of the tire is and make sure it's tight across. This helps lock that piece in place as you continue to drop the bead. On a more difficult tire you may need to take 1 or 2 bites with your tire lever, go back to dropping the bead, and repeat 2-3 times if necessary.

    After the install i followed the steps about putting in the tire sealant and i wasn't able to squeeze all of the sealant in. It's like it got clogged with the mucoff that I used. Now I have a hard time getting air into the Schrader valve. WTF???

    • @cushcore690

      Owen - Thanks for the information. It's usually pretty difficult to clog the CushCore valves since there are holes on both sides and the top. Were you using a compressor to inflate the tire?

    Great video.
    I dropped my bead to get the tyre on but when I went to pump it up the beads don't sit in and the tyre won't inflate at all as too much airbus escaping.
    Anyone got any tips ??

      I think I have the same issue, need to figure out how to undrop the bead so it goes back to the edge of the rim where it will seal. Did you find a solution?

    • @walkcoolboy

      yes same problem here, I guess you have to use a charger pump or compressor. I will go to local bike shop see if they have the high pressure pump.

    is is necessary to line up the valve with the Maxxis logo on the tire?

    • @cushcore690

      Tom - It's definitely not necessary but we like the way it looks and it's a pretty common practice to line up the logo with your valve for a tire install with our without CushCore.

    I spent several hours building a front wheel to perfection then bent the rim with the tire lever getting an Assegai on it.... That tire is misery to install/remove. Guess I didn't "drop the bead" enough. RIP FR560

    • @cushcore690

      Sorry to hear about the tough install experience. We only use plastic tire levers during the install and it sounds like may have went with a metal DH lever? As you can see from the video, if you make sure the bead is dropped all the way in the rim channel you won't need to use anything other than a plastic tire lever. Dropping the bead is by far the most important step in the installation process.

      Eric Krämer yes sir it did. You definitely get more of a balloon affect for the tire since it’s a bit narrow but I haven’t ran into any issues. Make sure you run cushcore, I think it keeps the tire on better and prevents folding over on hard turns. Hope this helps?

    • @cushcore690

      @@FoVision So typically we like to use the Stans 2 oz bottles. The nose fits perfectly in the valve and you just want to gently squeeze the bottle then let go over and over again until all the sealant is in the wheel. Putting the sealant in while taking air out. If you are using a syringe with a tight seal around the valve stem, the air you are displacing with the sealant has no where to go, so it will blow back at you. Try using a 2oz bottle like we did and let us know if that works for you.
