I dont plant windmill palms that low below the soil line. I make sure that the top of the root ball is just above the soil line so that in winter it will drain water properly and wont freeze the root system.
About planting depth for palms. Planting a water loving palm in a depression is "fine", but it is much better to plant it a little high then make a mound around it. That way you can control how much water pools up around it. The roots will be exposed to more air as well planting high and thats good for the palm. If someone has done the "mistake" of planting their palms in a depression I recommend you widen the depression. If nescerry create a small trench that will make the water run away it it collects too much water. 😊
I bought some largish palm plants off eBay uk a few years back. I transferred them to larger pots about 15 litre pots a while back. I’m now going to have them transferred to the ground. They look healthy in more shaded area. They fade if left in strong sun light. I’m going to have them planted along a shaded wall.
Just planted mine right at the back of my garden in the right hand corner, my soil is pure soil (virgin soil) all my plants grow nicely in my garden so hopefully it will be ok not having composte. Watered it well so hope it will be fine.
This guy was lazy. Why not 1. Free up the Palm roots 2. Add fertilizer and root stimulator 3. Extensively soak the tree before you add dirt. 4. Add some top soil. Also since these Palms like direct sunlight the back of the palm facing the wall will always have brown/dead leaves since it will not get sun.
I purchased two Majesty Palma from Home Depot and I wanted to ask anyone know how many feet do I have to dig to plant it? Also do I have to spread the roots by knocking down the soil after I take out the palm from the pot?? Please help thank you in advance everyone
I have had two palms in 15 litre pots for 10 years or so. In my experience they do not like full sun. They turn yellowish. They keep a nice dark green colour in a shaded area on a stand along a wall leaving room for the leaves to spread and not much water. I’m about to transfer them to the ground. Tropical rain forests are shady.
@@cj7girl280 It will most likely start to grow away from the wall to make room for the fronds or the fronds on the backside will be compressed into the wall until the palm is taller than the wall. Either scenerio is not a problem. Trachies do not get huge crowns or trunks.
Hi fe ga, SMS CUSTOM is asking for an indoor palm, so if a plant has been indoors for a while and not in direct sunlight then taking it outdoors into full sun can shock and scorch the leaves.
@@autotecni also thought they did until I planted some. They stay a nice dark green if left in a shaded area. The leaves fade if left in full sun. Mine are in pots at the moment. I’m about to transfer them to the ground along a shaded wall.
It's not a problem neither the wall or foundation of it will be damaged. One or two things will happen it either starts to bend slightly outwards to get away from the wall or it will just grow straight up with some fronds compressed on one side untill it clears the wall. Neither is a problem.
I would add that windmills must be planted in well drained soil. I've lost many that grew robustly for up to 12 yrs, and then succumbed to root rot. I have several with 6' of trunk that need to be dug up and transplanted in a well drained area of my yard. Since I don't have 5 strapping men to help me, I'll have to watch them slowly die over the next year or two. I'm growing seedling palmettos to replace them. They love wet feet and are bullet proof down on the flood plain.
@@Lutoslava Thanks for your concern.. Actually, I no longer think poor drainage is what's killing some of my windmill palms. I recently remembered about 12 yrs ago, I planted one in a swampy, muddy area located near the entrance to a stream.. It's still growing and appears very healthy. It gets only a little dappled sun, so it's not growing very fast, but it's healthy as can be! Other palms, growing on well drained soil have just 'up and died' for no apparent reason. I'm baffled! It's kind of you to take interest in my palm mystery.. I have 7 Windmill palms that seem very happy and are rapidly growing. Go figure! Thanks again for your input!! You seem like a nice person!!
are you in the demolition industry? how to ruin drainage ? how to knock a house down with a palm tree. ? knock that house down courtesy of the palm centre.
Thank you for keeping it short and sweet! 😊
2 things i'd have done before planting that Palm Tree:
1. Moved the wall back about 7ft
2. Freed up the roots before planting
No shit! hahaha right ON that wall, wtf.
@@StinkyTeal 😂
LOL
The rootball on a palm tree is small. I plant them at all my rental property in South Florida
I guess the proximity to the wall helps the palm as it will provide shelter and the brick will act like a storage heater in the summer.
How big is the palm tree now?
Незнаю кто вы но спасибо огромние... прекрасние видио...
Great video, short and sweet

Great tutorial. I saw many of these palms while visiting the UK.
Great vid. Our island is very rocky so when I dig holes to plant palms I have to use a pick and pry bar. You are lucky
How often should you water palm after it’s planted?
2 times per week

Bit close to that wall mate.
I was thinking the same... could be a problem in the future
Its not is wall
Looks to be about a meter... should be fine, but it will not look as aesthetically pleasing if it survives more than 10 years in the future.
It won't grow much more wider
@@slifer0081 they actually meant their roots are not able to grow bigger because of the wall blocking their way
When’s the best time to relocate a palm? I’m in the NE of England. Thanks
At the peak of summer when the soil is as warm as possible. So end of June.
Late spring is also good.
Can it damage the wall near by ...? Or how far is safe
Palms roots are different than that of other trees in that they don't damage house foundations or underground pipes.
Great! With best regards from Ukraine!
hello.. may i plz knw which category of Palm is this... I've it in my house & don't knw it's name.. kindly help... ☺☺☺
Hello, Samidha! The name of this palm is Chamaerops humilis, variously called European fan palm, or the Mediterranean dwarf palm.
@@samidhashukla9799 it's a Trachycarpus Fortunei.
You should move the wall to the back so the palmtree has more room to grow big leaves.
No stones I can hear them on the spade
hey mate...where do you purchase ur cold hardy palms that can handle the UK winter?

Ordinary garden soil will be just fine. Sounds good to me.
Can I plant in clay soil?
no... Unless you redig a very large hole and add a bag or two of sand to the surrounding soil. They need well drained soil.

how is it doing now? i just did the same thing.
I’m about to plant one too but in my filthy whore soil 😔

Do they need to be a ways away from concrete slab?
How much is a palm tree?
How’s the palm doing now? Can we get an update? Please

Majesty Palms ✨Suck✨
Too close to the brick wall.
Yeah the roots need space
Perfect information
Hmm ok. Nice. And today how it looks?
my favourite tree is a palm tree
HUMMM, is this full sun or east side of house or north, west or south?? How many hours of sun, how frequently water.

To close.. plus a tab buried too deep!! But thanks for the video. I love planting
Thanks for the post. How often do you need to water the newly planted palm tree?
Hi Jann Lechelle, at least twice a week in the warmer months.
This palm is called?
Windmill
Nice
May I grow it indoor my house?please
You're too close to the wall.
And, you should break up the rootball so the roots don't choke itself to death.
Trachycarpus has small rootballs and they do not damage walls or foundations.
Too close to the building. Needs some room when gets tall and wide. 🤪

What kind a palm is that?

It's a windmill palm - Won't be too big. Still too close for comfort.

Hi SMS CUSTOMS! yes but not in full sun and avoid very cold nights, it depends on the species, what is it?
Why not in full sun. do they not do well in full sun?

big NO, dont plan any tree next to your house, moisture, roots, termite and so on... don't suprise if you see any cracks on the wall.

Windmill palm tree

Everybody saying too close to wall but no one saying why you shouldn't plant it so close ?
It’s common sense that if you plant it too close to a wall the leaves can’t spread if the walls in the way.
i agree but beaufull plam
YO TENGO SMALL PALMS ON MINNESOTAAAA
2020 anyone
He said they don't like sandy soil that's wrong they prefer sandy soil

Perhaps there are some volunteer gardeners in your area who would lend a hand? It's a pity to let the trees die.
