I think 1995/early 1996 WWF can finally shake the reputation of being the dark ages for wrestling. When I’d rather see a recap of 1995 Raw, it’s safe to say the current product now takes the title of the worst era on wrestling.

Survivor Series '96 is severely underrated so you're in for a treat. Sid's best match by a country mile and NYC was so into his gimmick. Whole crowd was cheering the company's biggest heel and boo'ing the babyface champion out of the building.
I think Survivor Series 1996 was Sid's career crowning achievement. All the stars aligned and he was the most over wrestler of the night, he won the title and had arguably his best match ever.

    • @aaronneville1164
      @aaronneville1164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sid was not the company's biggest heel. Remember, Sid had returned in July of 1996 as a babyface and HBK mystery partner. HBK controlled the emotion of the entire crowd and they ate it up with a spoon. If guys boo him and girls love him, he's accomplished his goal. That's the 90's HBK gimmick.
HBK handpicked Sid for this spot. Make Sid look good at Survivor Series so the rematch can be even bigger at Royal Royal when HBK gets the title back in the Alamodome. Plan worked like a charm.

I attended that Baltimore house show that they keep advertising. A friend of mine got three tickets about six or seven rows back in the first elevated section closest to the entryway. He was able to get these the day before the show, so the other poster who said they had low sales due to some Ticketmaster problem might be onto something, but I can't confirm that. There's only a few things I firmly remember from the show. 1) Hall and Nash didn't come out to the NWO theme, but instead, they entered to LL Cool J's "Doin' It." Nash sauntered down the aisle eating an apple just as LL did in the video for that song. 16-year old me popped. 2) Sullivan and Benoit fought up the steps right next to where we were sitting. Benoit took a slam on the flat part of the concrete steps. 3) The crowd was verbally disappointed in some of the match outcomes, especially the no contest for Sullivan/Benoit and the DQ finish for The Giant/Sting main event.

I don’t know why the Baltimore house show is getting so much coverage, and it’s kind of bizarre because the Great American Bash earlier in the year featured Benoit/Sullivan in a falls count anywhere match that went all the way to the public bathroom.
But guess what? I went into CageMatch and their fight at this house show was another falls count anywhere match! And then I found a clip from a show in 97 from Milwaukee where they do the bathroom spot again!
I know I was at one of these Baltimore shows but now I have no idea if I went to the GAB or this house show anymore.

That all being said, the Baltimore Civic Center is one of the classic halls of JCP/WCW's territory (along with such places as the Greensboro Coliseum, and something that I think AEW harkened to trying to capture with Full Gear 2019) so I'm not surprised by promotion of the event on TV, but this level of promotion and storyline weaving is astounding.

I was at Raw in November of 1996 in Fort Wayne, I was 7. I remember the Mankind vs Freddie Joe Floyd match, also saw Crush vs Aldo Montoya. I know it was taped, but still find it funny how the matches were scattered across 4 shows.

When bloopers happen, like the pin attempt in the Jericho match, it actually makes it a little more realistic. If it was a real, not every fancy pin attempt is going to flow perfectly.

I saw a house show of WWF about a week before this in 1996 and I was into it, I was honestly more into WWF at the time, but I would try to at least tape-record WCW on VHS tapes so I had extra wrestling to watch. The competition was good between WCW and WWF back then.

The funniest thing about the Sid/Shawn plot, as well as ones like it, is it relies on the idea that wrestlers never watch their own shows. In this case, if Sid had actually watched the footage he'd know that the superkick was an accident and that Shawn didn't use the chair.

You got to remember as well back then, during Mankind's debut he was built as somebody who can take punishment and still keep coming, i think it's why he gets beaten up so much, to show off his HP recovery rate.

4 weeks of the same promo?
Hell, Hogan gave the same promo for the entire run of the NWO in WCW.
What made it different was that it was live and had that “what’s gonna happen” feel. But looking back you realize, good grief man, can’t we have a different thought at some point?

One thing I got to give WcW hands down over WWF, at least during this period, is that WcW had better more interesting matches and way more of them. WcW had so much freakin talent, Norton V Luger to me is a good match. Raw talent roster was just so much smaller, and the matches are much more, constrained
