Hey Brother Man, I think the used market is going to improve to the point where people won’t be motivated to buy new - until they lower prices a bit. But who knows, I could be all wrong as usual Thanks for watching! 🙏🎸😎
I've been calling a guitar crash for the better part of 2 decades. It's inevitable. Fewer new players, aging players needing to liquidate, and a daily overproduction by manufacturers competing against their own used inventory already in the market. I'm just surprised it's taken this long to play out.
I think the Covid production gap delayed it by a few years. Demand went way up, and factories were closed for at least 2 years. But yes, this was inevitable.
Gibson prices are ridiculous. I agree with you. Big name guitar maker prices have gotten out of hand. Especially considering the cost of the materials to make it. $3000 for a guitar? Never. Stop paying for the name and the price will come down.
I bought my 70's D-35 brand new for $470, which was a lot of money back then. If you check the inflation that took place from then to now, the inflated price for that instrument would be right around $3200. Give or take a few hundred, that's what a brand new one is selling for today. $3,000 is not a lot of money to pay for a well-made, quality guitar.
So here's the thing... During Covid the market got flooded with new guitar purchases by new aspiringplayers, deciding "This is a good time to learn the guitar" ... 99% of them bought the $1400 and cheaper import and entry level USA stuff... Throw into the mix, inflation hit, and the supply /demand curve was taxed by the increase in demand... so those "cheap" guitars were highly inflated.. What wasn't inflated that much? The $8000, $10000 and $20000 guitars made in extremely limited numbers and bought by people who are immune to inflation and price increases .. If you want to sell a guitar fast, list a hard to find Gibson '59 Reissue with a 5A Quilted top ... but if you're selling yet another $2999 Les Paul Standard ... or worse yet, Epiphone, you're going to have to slash prices to compete with the tons of brand new inventory and used inventory.
For the last 20 years I have focused on off brands. I rarely buy used but I have bought damaged because I know how to repair. My favorite guitar is a Washburn WP-50 law suit guitar. I bought it in 1989 and it is a keeper.
I am afraid that another channel was explaining that the USED guitar market has crashed because of the over saturation during lock down and the fact that all the people who tried to play and gave up - are now all trying to sell their guitars!!!! lol....
Most of the inflation is artificial, guitar market and everywhere else. In other words, it is not inflation at all. It is gouging. Gibson and Fender are raising prices $100 every year at this point. A made in Mexico Strat will cost as much as a Volkswagen in a couple of years at this rate.
I haven’t purchased a new bass for 10+ years..always off the used market..tremendous value there and so many of the instruments I have purchased are in close to new condition while saving significant money. The market is flooded and slow but I have recently sold off some speaker cabinets and heads at my asking price… I guess it depends on what you’re selling. The Fender Custom Shop can only come down in price since that stuff is so overpriced to begin with. Another problem that might be contributing to this is the live music scene and the lack of venues to perform in.. people learn how to play a few songs and are stuck in a basement with their friends ( which is awesome ) it gets old when you can’t go out and do live performances..
Great points, my friend. I think of new guitars the same way I do new cars. Almost no reason whatsoever so buy one. Great deals await us, with a little patience and perseverance. Thanks for watching 🎸😎

Hi Paul, totally agree with your analysis. Not mentionning high quality competition from overseas brands (Sire ...) or manufacturing process mastering (Epiphone Masterbilt or Inspired by Gibson, Squier classic vibes etc..). Lots of good brand new guitars with terrific sound at low prices on the market . What is happening with digital improvment on the combo amplifier market is also worth looking at. Great channel, all the best.

Recently SG' are way too high $549.99 for a Standard & used is no better. I never buy Gibson or Fender or anything that's 1K or more. It's a piece of wood & with some time you can get cheaper guitars to play fine. I know of high priced guitars that don't play right. Too many people hear with their eyes & in the end they all do the same thing. People can dictate the market if they just have the will power to say no I'm not paying for that. Even used HB are selling for more then the new ones on Reverb. The used market is terrible! We seen in 2020 how we can change the price at the pump. Doesn't apply to food but in other areas we can change it. We seen it in the car market where dealers were paying you more then what you paid for your car. Solution is simply stop buying. I'm sure you all have more then enough guitars.
Good video! New guitars have been too expensive for me for a long time. The used market has some beautiful instruments and as you pointed out, you can often save up to 40% or more if you find a used guitar that you like. The fringe benefit is, if you decide to sell at a future time, you can recoup most of your money and often sell for a profit.
@@rosewoodsteel6656 thanks very much!! I agree with you. I look at the current guitar market the same way I’ve always looked at the car market. Buy used, and let someone else take the depreciation hit!! Thanks for watching 🙏🎸😎
As of now Fender is discounting brand new guitars. On one of the major seller sites a brand new American Professional II Stratocaster now sells for $1,440.00 where the regular price was $1,799.99. Still expensive but that is a savings of $359.99 for a new Fender Strat.
i had an american tele body on reverb for less than 300, lots of watchers and low ball offers but no buyer in 2 months. so i took it down and will hold it for a while.
I started playing guitar in 1965 and drums in '69 (I notice you play drums also, cool). Been gigging since 69, still gigging now. I was a Gibson man for 25 years, but when Henry J. bought Gibson in the 80s, I soon lost interest and started checking out many other brands. He simply placed Gibson prices too exorbitant for the average working musician who has to consider his player features and risk out on the gig. I gravitated more to Fender, Carvin, G&L, Ibanez, Godin, Yamaha, Agile, Taylor, etc., altthough I still own three Gibsons. Used is almost always the way to go, unless there is a seriously good sale price. I find the Japanese and Korean made models to be as good or better than the USA models. The Godin Canadian/USA built models are excellent too. And I have plenty of China and Indonesia made gee-tars too. I don't rush, take my time, research my options, and play a lot of the same models before I pick one. In short, don't be in a hurry. I have four dozen electric, acoustic, classical, synthesizer, 12 strings guitars, including 4 and 5 string bass guitars, all for about the cost of 4-6 new Gibsons. Yep, where there is a will there is a way. The Good Lord blesses too if you are a man of faith in Christ Jesus. I bought a brand new Taylor 514CE with OHSC on sale, sold it, bought it back over several years and have a grand total invested in it of $682.50. I praise the Lord for that one and that He bought it back to me years ago. Don't be in hurry, be smart, take your time, look around and you will find your good stuff in due season. Tip: if you get into something for a good price, it's a lot easier to sell it later and not lose money. Sometimes you make a little more, sometimes a little less, but it balances out relatively speaking for me over many decades of buying and selling, even when my first and ex-wife had me in dismal financial conditions. Things have been real good now since 2015, PTL. I have to be esp. careful now, living in an area flooded with military bases/personnel, as the military folks can buy high, but sell low when they gotta go. So my area is flooded with fire sale gear. Good buying, but horrible selling later, unless you get in real low, ha. In short, patience is a virtue, don't go for instant gratification. Good things come to him who waits.
Thank you, and great message. Actually I’m a drummer who’s now a wannabe guitar player. But I love them. I will say that the new Gibson’s are pretty fantastic in some cases. Take care, and thanks for watching!
@@paulgeorgia8013 Y/w, thx! I hear you. I figured as much on the drums aspect. You sound good in your drum videos. Doing a rare gig tomorrow night on drums myself. I'm mainly a singer/guitarist (lead and rhythm, electric or acoustic), but I can do a credible job as a singing sideman on electric bass and drums, and I can adequately be a "hack" keyboardist to flavor up bands a bit (or accomplish that function via my synth guitar gear, got a Godin LGXT and a Roland GR-33), ha, but I need to learn and practice my keys a lot more, for sure. I do have three 2010 and 2013 Gibsons that are good guitars, for sure.
I've owned 18 guitars. 9 were new and 9 were used. However I've never paid more than $600.00 even for the Fender or Gibson models I've owned. When I bought them it was back in the early 1970's. Some were under $400.00 new. The others were most recent purchases were new and under $600.00. Most of the guitars were between $350.00 and $400.00. If you know where to look and are patient you can find deals if you are looking for specific models.
@@BrianBrazilHarmonica sounds like you’re a very savvy guitar shopper! When I was a kid, my brothers were always buying and selling good Gibson’s and Fenders for 4-500 hundred. Ah, those were the days! Thanks for watching. 🎸🙏😎
I played guitar for about 45 years, still do sometimes. Owned a couple D-28 Martins but my J-60 Gibson was a cannon. I never got personally attached to a guitar. It was just a tool. I don't own it, I was just it's caretaker for the time I had it. Passed it on to other people to enjoy and sold for no profit. All these guitars in collections should be set free. I needed and could only play one guitar at a time. That was enough for me.
Well, I agree, there’s something to be said about bonding with one special guitar. I hope, someday, to be able to think my herd down maybe one acoustic and one electric. I’ve never played a J-60 before. Might have to try one if I get the chance. Thanks for watching! 🙏🎸😎
It's rare I ever buy new mostly , if it's something I think would be hard to find used. Id prefer a used instrument cause I don't feel bad playing it hard.
love buying anything pre 2008 or even pre-dating 2000s, there are so many quality fender models made in the original mexico plant or even korea and japan that far surpass any Indonesian made 2023 squire
It’s all about how desperate you are to move your gear, too. I sold two Philip Kubicki EXF4 basses (one with frets, one without) and a limited edition (20 of 30 made) Rickenbacker 4003 bass for probably about 80% for what they were worth (the Rick went for the closest to what I paid for it), and this was before the consigner got their cut. I wasn’t playing any of them, and I drive the Corvette I bought with the proceeds from the sales a lot more regularly, so I don’t lose much sleep over it. But yeah, I definitely made less than what I expected to off those transactions.
From the UK here, I have listed three guitars One Gibson, One Fender and a Kramer. Three to four times all low priced for what they are. No buyers. 1 silly offer for the Gibson that's it. That was on Ebay.
I’ve been doing gigs all my life. I’ve know since ‘69 that used music/production gear is worth 10 cents on the dollar when you look to sell. This has been confirmed by my podners that own real big production companies. REMEMBER 10 cents on the dollar. The correction is gonna be that they ain’t even gonna worth that….
In 1989 I purchased a new Gibson Les Paul Custom and a new PRS CE 24 Custom and when I was purchasing my first house I tried to sell them to help with my down payment 🫤 I couldn’t get more than $500 each both being in excellent condition 🫤 losing money on guitars is nothing new !
Wonder what will happen to boutique builders? Their cost has risen significantly. I bought a used Bourgeois this year for $4700 and a new one cost 13k.
Good question. Wow, that’s a massive price increase! I haven’t been following the boutique market for quite a while. Well, I guess they may decide to build less guitars for more money. But I can’t imagine they’re good investments at those prices. Thanks for watching! 🙏🎸😎
I’m confused… a 2022 is just a used guitar. Gibson / Fender don’t care about resale value because they get none of that money. If the market is in trouble, it seems like sellers would be to blame for that in my very humble opinion not being an expert. If you buy a 2022 guitar and expect to sell it a year or two later for nearly or even more than the purchase price, you better have bought a very limited run that is highly sought after. A 79 silverburst or a 59 LP standard are probably holding their value just fine and even going up. Short sellers are the ones taking a bath.
As far as cars & guitars go.....I'm keeping what I have. I will not throw my money away on those overpriced, Objects. I have 14 guitars, & 4 Cars..... All, perfectly "Tuned" to keep using in all my venues. Fender, Gibson, Ford & Chevy, can kiss my azz.😂
It already has, no one is buying, it's definitely a buyers market, and as the economy continues to crash, you can bet that the guitar market will have a lot of investors losing there arse, nobody has disposable income like we did a few years ago, I don't feel bad having to hold on to a chit load of budget guitars, and although it would be nice to sale one so I can buy one, I will most likely just keep buying, maybe just high end guitars this time around.
Look at Harley Benton: they are able to crank out excellent guitars with stainless steel frets! And for a price of a Squier starter pack guitar.... From what I've gathered, a HB guitar can be easily upgraded for about a 100 dollars and beat any Fender/Gibson/Charvel. Meanwhile, a Gibson is like 4,000 USD!
I ordered the HB copy of Prince's Madcat Hohner. Never got it. Supply problems. They sent the bag though. Their stated delayed shipping policy doesn't apply to N.A.
Why do people always talk about resale value? Who buys guitars just to sell them? I just don’t understand. I have 31 guitars and I could get a crap about what their resale values are. Maybe some of you buys guitars just to sell but it just doesn’t make any sense at all to me. Just don’t buy the guitar.
We each have our reasons for buying and selling. One reason is that in today’s guitar- buying process, it’s nearly impossible to try a guitar you’re interested in at a store. Sometimes you have to buy it to try it. Maybe you like it, maybe you don’t. Another reason is for people like myself who may want a particular sound for a track, but don’t necessarily want to keep it beyond that point. To each his or her own. Thanks for watching!
It actually due to corporations price gouging the public. Starting with the rapidly fluctuating price of oil it becomes a never ending cycle of price increases.
Inflation is caused by devaluing the dollar. If printing presses are running day and night and the dollar is not pegged to a standard, such as silver, the dollar is worth less and will therefore buy less.
My next guitar will be used 😂! Great points on the guitar market. Over here we’re even considering used bread 😂. Loved the video, brother Paul 👍🏻

I bought my 70's D-35 brand new for $470, which was a lot of money back then.
I have not been imperssed with the Indonesian made guitars I have seen.
Yes, it’s a buyer’s market right now for sure. I’m holding my cards for a while.
From the UK here, I have listed three guitars One Gibson, One Fender and a Kramer. Three to four times all low priced for what they are. No buyers. 1 silly offer for the Gibson that's it. That was on Ebay.
I’ve been doing
gigs all my life.
I’ve know since ‘69
that used music/production gear
is worth 10 cents
on the dollar when
you look to sell.
This has been confirmed by my
podners that own
real big production
companies.
REMEMBER 10 cents
on the dollar. The correction is gonna be
that they ain’t even gonna worth that….
YT Algo brought me here, and I am grateful. And you, sir, I agree with your analysis. Unfortunately. 😢 Subbed.
@@paulgeorgia8013 I never buy guitars for investments. The type woods are a big part of the cost and those just keep going up.
I will not throw my money away on those overpriced,
Objects. I have 14 guitars, & 4 Cars..... All, perfectly
"Tuned" to keep using in all my venues. Fender, Gibson,
Ford & Chevy, can kiss my azz.😂
I got my Gibson J-200 1976 artist I took my pick guard off, and it looks better without it>
Nice! I think that has a different bridge than the mustache bridge, right?
@@paulgeorgia8013 yes, different
I’ve been meaning to try Harley Benton for a while now. I think a nice Tele would be a great place to start. Thanks for reminding me! 🙏🎸😎
Riiiight.
I ordered the HB copy of Prince's Madcat Hohner. Never got it. Supply problems. They sent the bag though.
Their stated delayed shipping policy doesn't apply to N.A.
...still waiting.....
So far, only the used market appears to be affected. That includes the vintage market- prices are dropping, although minimally
Yes, it is crashing hard.
The guitar is going the way of the mandolin.when all people born before 1996 die the remaining people don’t give a sheet about guitars
With the sun flares, ruzzia and China, it might not be the only thing that crashes this year LOL.
The ceos are eating up so much just get rid of them. Guitars will be more affordable
It's very simple don't be dumb and buy overpriced junk like Gibson. There has been a lot of inflation in music gear fender gear is going up too.
5 month later - guitar market didn't crash
Be patient
What! Joe said we got inflation back to normal and there is no inflation....😂
He also said his vice president is Trump. That should tell you something. :)
