The girl you bought from and walked you off plane likely got huge commission. They wouldn't tell you anything that would deter you from buying. If the item was more than 10k it would be flagged by credit card company to border services.
If the expensive purchase is anything like (for ex buying a Birkin in France) to save $ what you have to do is while making the purchase you have to ask the designer store to fill out specific paperwork with you. Then yes you will pay taxes going through customs. BUT once back in the USA you send in the forms and then recurve a check in the mail for even more $ in return. So you saved the $ by buying out of the country & then you get the “refund” check by filling out the VAT forms. This is my best guess!
Duty free does not mean you do not have to pay tax when you arrive at your destination. You have an allowance and over that tax is due. It however should still be cheaper than buying in your home country. I bought a diamond bracelet and just wore it when I went through customs, which worked ok but the ship is at fault I think, they through you under a bus and if I was you I would write to Richard Branson after the treatment you received.

What a horrendous experience, I really feel for you and your husband! The problem was obviously US authorities, not foreign authorities. I'm European, I have lived abroad, travelled the continents and bought expensive stuff, crossed borders with it and I have never experienced anything as scary as what you recount. When I was 15 years old and had to enter and exit the Soviet Union for a language trip with school, I had to declare basic jewellery, a can of Coca Cola, nylon stockings and even something as silly as a boring novel. They Soviet Union Customs and border control were very particular but it was not even remotely as bad as what the US Customs put you through - after a cruise ship trip beginning and ending in Miami(?!)! Eastern Germany Customs was not a hoot back in the days either but still - they were way more respectful than the US authorities you (as an American, not a foreigner!) had to deal with. Thank you for sharing this horror story and making people aware of the risks, I will pass it on to friends who loves going to Miami and Fort Lauderdale a couple of times a.year to cruise with Celebrity Cruises. I don't know anyone who went with Virgin Cruises but you can be sure I will advice strongly against it and send them this clip if I ever hear anyone mention it. People get PTSD for life for less so take care of yourselves and each other❤

Heather, you forgot a key part to the story about the woman who put the listening devices in her ex’s jacket & then killed his girlfriend & then herself-she didn’t call him & tell him to come over (he had a weird feeling that she was going to go over to his gf’s house again, which she had been doing, & went to check on her), she called her mom right before she killed the gf & herself and told her she was being attacked and then screamed his name, before hanging up. She was legit trying to get that man convicted of killing at least her as her final act of retaliation because he fell in love with his boss. The interviews he did (dateline, maybe? 20/20?) are really sad. It was clear that he never intended to have an affair, like he wasn’t someone looking for an affair, he had an intense connection w/ his new boss, they were both unhappy in both of their marriages at that point & it happened, as it does, unfortunately. It’s terrible when people cheat, I’m just saying that this guy didn’t plan to fall in love with this woman, didn’t want to hurt his wife but also was no longer happy, made a decision, and he’s clearly traumatized by the fact that this decision got two people that he loved killed. He wasn’t some guy just going around having affairs & thinking nothing of his wife, that’s not fair to anyone in this story. when everything was finally out in the open (after she’d bugged their home, his car, and his clothes), she went to their work and told their bosses about the affair, they both had to move to new cities and get new jobs, he tried repeatedly to get a divorce and she started stalking the gf, in an effort to get her to stop the harassment, he tried repeatedly to meet up with her & talk w/her but every time he did she would act like they were still together & everything was fine & it freaked him out, so he finally had to sit her down and very bluntly say that it was over & she needed to move on (I think he was still/and was planning on continuing to financially support her until she landed on her feet), and then she set up this whole plan to kill the gf & try to frame him for her murder. It’s a wild, sad story. As a society, we need to be more realistic about relationships and the fact that people change and people fall out of love and it’s not necessarily anyone’s fault, but we need to acknowledge that and understand when it’s time to move on. So many people stay in unhealthy, unhappy relationships because they think they have to, that they’re failures if it doesn’t work out (you’re not!), etc., and it can push people to do drastic things. And too many people have their whole identity wrapped in their relationships, and when it ends, they don’t know what to do. We need to have healthier discussions about the reality of these situations.
Thank you for your story! I will absolutely never go on a cruise. My husband and I love all inclusives in Mexico and that’s what we will stick to. And I will only continue to buy cheap little souvenir trinkets. What a horrible experience you had. And that you helped the ship get more customers. Awful!!!!

I got detained by customs with clearance clothing from H&M and a statue of the winged victory I bought in the Louvre gift shop and was questioned why it didn't have a head as they must have assumed that I stuffed it full of drugs . I was over the exemption amount by $50 . Now I claim everything and go through customs with a clear zip lock bag of receipts in my hand .

Heather, you forgot a key part to the story about the woman who put the listening devices in her ex’s jacket & then killed his girlfriend & then herself-she didn’t call him & tell him to come over (he had a weird feeling that she was going to go over to his gf’s house again, which she had been doing, & went to check on her), she called her mom right before she killed the gf & herself and told her she was being attacked and then screamed his name, before hanging up. She was legit trying to get that man convicted of killing at least her as her final act of retaliation because he fell in love with his boss. The interviews he did (dateline, maybe? 20/20?) are really sad. It was clear that he never intended to have an affair, like he wasn’t someone looking for an affair, he had an intense connection w/ his new boss, they were both unhappy in both of their marriages at that point & it happened, as it does, unfortunately. It’s terrible when people cheat, I’m just saying that this guy didn’t plan to fall in love with this woman, didn’t want to hurt his wife but also was no longer happy, made a decision, and he’s clearly traumatized by the fact that this decision got two people that he loved killed. He wasn’t some guy just going around having affairs & thinking nothing of his wife, that’s not fair to anyone in this story.
when everything was finally out in the open (after she’d bugged their home, his car, and his clothes), she went to their work and told their bosses about the affair, they both had to move to new cities and get new jobs, he tried repeatedly to get a divorce and she started stalking the gf, in an effort to get her to stop the harassment, he tried repeatedly to meet up with her & talk w/her but every time he did she would act like they were still together & everything was fine & it freaked him out, so he finally had to sit her down and very bluntly say that it was over & she needed to move on (I think he was still/and was planning on continuing to financially support her until she landed on her feet), and then she set up this whole plan to kill the gf & try to frame him for her murder. It’s a wild, sad story.
As a society, we need to be more realistic about relationships and the fact that people change and people fall out of love and it’s not necessarily anyone’s fault, but we need to acknowledge that and understand when it’s time to move on. So many people stay in unhealthy, unhappy relationships because they think they have to, that they’re failures if it doesn’t work out (you’re not!), etc., and it can push people to do drastic things. And too many people have their whole identity wrapped in their relationships, and when it ends, they don’t know what to do. We need to have healthier discussions about the reality of these situations.

Thank you for your story! I will absolutely never go on a cruise. My husband and I love all inclusives in Mexico and that’s what we will stick to. And I will only continue to buy cheap little souvenir trinkets. What a horrible experience you had. And that you helped the ship get more customers. Awful!!!!

I got detained by customs with clearance clothing from H&M and a statue of the winged victory I bought in the Louvre gift shop and was questioned why it didn't have a head as they must have assumed that I stuffed it full of drugs . I was over the exemption amount by $50 . Now I claim everything and go through customs with a clear zip lock bag of receipts in my hand .
