      It was only a moderate success when it was on ABC. Much like *Star Trek,* it was the syndicated reruns that built its legacy. TV syndication isn’t what it used to be because streaming shows are often too raunchy to meet FCC standards and barely any network shows now get the ratings that even a flop got back then. The likelihood that any modern-day network sitcom will have that kind of impact on popular culture again is unlikely. Look at how many shows won more Emmys and got higher ratings but are barely remembered today.

      They're teasers to get ratings and people watching. Most of those clips in the beginning of different cast members implying something more scandalous, were actually very innocent events

      @wylier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      remember this was about the lives of the cast, not just 'what happened on the set'. Since Robert was 'in the closet', and Maureen later was an addict, those types of stories can make for lurid lead-ins.

    • @Perririri
      @Perririri 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Time for Susan to show her Brady cVnt!! 😘

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They barely talked about Maureen’s drug addiction. That’s what makes it all the more ironic she didn’t want to come back to do *The Bradys* because she disliked the script. They made Marcia an alcoholic, so that would have forced her to relive those days, but in character. She stuck with the show through the variety show, the two reunion movies, and the NBC sitcom, but this is where she drew the line.
      It’s ironic. The variety show reimagined her as Dorothy at a car wash in Oz. Judy Garland never managed to beat addiction, but she did.

    • @Gus-Was-Here
      @Gus-Was-Here 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have several favorites. I guess the Hawaii vacation 3-parter was probably my favorite, especially the story around the curse of the Tiki doll. I also loved anything that involved Bobby (huge crush on him, lol). I loved the one where Bobby was Safety Monitor at school and became power hungry (which, ironically, was the same one in which Barry Williams appeared stoned). I liked the 'Pork Chops and Applesauce' episode where Peter is trying to have a better personality. I really liked the one where Marcia gave her plain-Jane friend, Molly, a makeover and Molly then got a big head about it all. So many great episodes. Reminds me of an innocent time in my life.

    I loved the Brandy Bunch growing up in the 70's. Someone said, it was made just for kids. I don't think it just influenced kids, because I have some family members that had houses and kids that lived very similar to the Brady Bunch. All my dad's brother and sister's lived like that. My mom's parents and her brother and sister's lived that way. My parent's were the only ones who didn't live that way. Of course!! 🙄 We were the poor ones and black sheep of the family. I'm still poor. I never got the chance to live in a beautiful house. Unfortunately, I married someone who didn't want the same things in life as I did. I thought if I worked hard and helped pay bills and bought groceries for our family...my husband would save money to buy us a house and we'd have a swimming pool in the backyard. Nope!! That didn't happen, because he's spent money on what he wanted. Things like tools or whatever he wanted. I did without. 34 years later it's worse than when we first got married. Oh well. 😏
    When I found out the dad on the Brady Bunch was gay...that busted my bubble. They all had thier problems, but that TV show brought a lot of happiness to a lot of people, ( not just kids ).

    • @Attmay

      He was in *Barefoot in the Park* on Broadway, so it’s not as if he never did comedy before. I think his initial contract that he signed when he took the role he played on Mannix was before Lucille Ball sold Desilu to Paramount. Was he on that show from the beginning?
      Paramount also made the movie of that play, but replaced him with Robert Redford. After *The Brady Bunch* premiered, they made a TV series based on it with black actors. Best case scenario, when Desilu bought Paramount, he was probably hoping to get that.

      Who said it was “ok”? They all expressed compassion for how he had to keep his personal life very private. But of course they understood. You have to remember it was a VERY different time. If he went public with being gay or was outed it would have ruined his career.

      The Stonewall riots happened the same year at this show premiered. Oh, and I’m mostly sure it’s a coincidence, but it was also the same year Dick Sargent replaced Dick York on .*Bewitched.* They both died around the same time as Reed, but at least Sargent could come out of the closet before that point.

    I was a 70's child and I will admit that I grew up watching the Brady Bunch..However,Barry Williams in my opinion over dramatizes his pot smoking, Brady mom dating stories to make himself sound more important..I was watching another interview, and he was going on about filming high and Christopher Knight was pretty much rolling his eyes..Lol! Oh well I still love the Brady Bunch and I am thankful that I experienced in real time and not just in re-runs..

    • @EastSide-qc5oy
      @EastSide-qc5oy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think he’s trying to make himself seem “more important.” I think he’s just playing up what happened to be entertaining. These people are/were all in show business and they know the value of entertaining and giving the audience a good story. In this context it’s pretty harmless. Also from the viewer’s perspective everything is exaggerated and enhanced by the cheesy editing, music, and narration style by ET.

    Being gay is not dark. They really did a number on all of them. So gratuitous. Smoking pot hasn't killed anyone. Sex is not a big deal. Life is life deal with it. Robert Reed could have been more kinder in some aspects.

  • @blizzytiger
    @blizzytiger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    E.T. is so sleazy. The scandalous music in the open/tease. Leave it to
    them to make every detail sound horrible. And sending Steines to that
    gay bar. Anything for ratings. And why would Susan Olsen even say that at all about Bob cutting himself (33:43)???

    • @judyholiday1794
      @judyholiday1794 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the exact same thing Blizzytiger, especially having Steines filming at the same gay bar that Robert Reed liked to frequent..

    • @blizzytiger
      @blizzytiger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it was in the 2000s when gay was not a taboo subject anymore. As some who was actually on staff at ET, I can assure you that this intentional sleazefest was orchestrated under the then-Executive Producer’s command. She came from “Hard Copy” originally and loved making everything a shocking scandal.

    • @Tre404
      @Tre404 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing about "Bob" cutting himself... I think Susan's comment was taken out of context from some other subject. When you look at the tone of this "documentary," it's quite likely. It was just that one, short sentence; I think it was taken from one context and put into the HIV/Bob context. I mean, he didn't even HAVE the disease back when "The Brady Bunch" was in production!

I mean at the time I'm sure Susan and Michael didn't really understand about Robert Reed's life style. It's just my opinion.
