    Jan Van Sickel book is where I primarily studied most of my material. I used the NCEES books and several older practice tests I gathered from other surveyors. The FS exam I would say is 20-30% math. I've taken it since they changed the format from when you did. I take the PS exam in 2 days. Good video, I wish there was more content out there like this.

      I take my FS exam in about 3 weeks. I've read through the NCEES Manual and taken the practice exams. Which I still need to run through a few more times and advice to better prepare myself for the exam?

    Great advice! I'd say I learned more in the first few years _after_ I got licensed than in all the years that came before.

    I am licensed in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Arizona. I taught surveying for 7 years at community college. I have mentored plenty of aspirants through the exam process. Your book recommendations are good. The best way to learn PLSS states is to take the 9 cfeds courses. The most important word in a land description is “to”. 1001 Survey Questions is good. When I taught exam review classes I used the Land Surveyor’s Reference Manual with Solutions Book in the class. Ted Madsen “ The Mathematics of Land Surveying “ is a good choice to learn coordinates, intersection solutions and curves.

    Fantastic. I've been in surveying for 3 years, and I'm looking to take my FS soon. I took a look at the Van Sickle book and immediately felt like a phony lmao.
    But one piece at a time. It's coming together slowly. Cant wait to take and hopefully pass. Thank you for the advice

    Thank you for your time on this subject. I have been working for a surveyor for almost 4 years and I just recently finished my degree and extra courses. The state of Texas required all documents submitted to be reviewed before I can test so I am currently waiting for the results. I have been prepping, but stress will always be there. I ordered the book you mentioned already, should be here in a couple days and a few more books from PPI in order to focus on the FS exam.

    Great vid, man. You picked a great state to survey, I've surveyed in CO a little myself. Currently taking classes and hope to take the FS in the next few months. Your book recommendations and exam tips are priceless. Much appreciated!

    Elementary Surveying was a hugely helpful book for the FS. I couldn't have passed it on my first try without reading it cover to cover and working through all of the example problems.

    appreciate the post, as you mentioned, not a lot of free resources out there to aid in prep for the PS exam. I had many of the texts you referenced but very grateful for the recommendation on the Jan Van Sickle survey problems text. Gonna look it up right now. Jan does a great lecture if you ever get him to come to your annual conferences. I'm sitting in a little over a month for the PS, and struggling to feel adequately prepared, even after 16yrs in the profession. Every bit helps, thanks again!

      Brian, How'd the PS exam go and feel for you?

    • @Ag8te11
      @Ag8te11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daytrippingnorthcarolina2579 its only been a few months since i sat for both state and PS and getting fuzzy on the visceral reaction to both. Van sickles solved problems get you in the test taking response timeframe and the2009 manual was my 2nd heaviest resource. I wish id spent more time with browns bndy- that would be the go to if it had to go again. Ended up having way more time than i thought and had like 45mins to go through and second guess myself. Hard to say if that helped or if i shoulda just walked early. Browns boundary law man, thats the stuff.

    So what I understood from it is that some of these questions are like my physics class...they give you some unnecessary data sometimes. Thank you you're video is real informative I am studying for this test to advance in my career meanwhile I graduate as a civil engineer. Yes, I agree with you it is wonderful to learn something new everyday.

    great post. The hoop this test is has become a joke. Trying to trick us for the deception of a question is intellectually dishonest. I wouldn't send a crew into the field and try to trick them with my instructions.
    Either way awesome primer for the FS, I'll be taking it soon. Thank you for the candor.

    • @CoryGehring

      It was not as math heavy as I had expected. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of math, just not as much as I expected. I'd also suggest you take the break provided and go get something to eat. I just took a head call and went right back to the test. I should have used the break. I had to sign a nondisclosure agreement so can't give you much in the way of details. I'd suggest you get the FS practice exam from NCEES. It mirrors most of the test.

      Following up to say that I read somewhere recently that they have throttled back on the number of math questions and that it's consistently in the neighborhood of 10-12 questions. Which sucks for me personally because math was my strong suit lol. But I feel good about the upcoming exam!

    What are some good books to learn about surveying from the beginning. I’m just finding out about surveying and finding it super interesting and I’m still young enough I could career change into the field. Clearly there’s a ton to learn in addition to getting experience. Any recommendations would be great, thanks!

      Surveying Principles and Practices, I think thats what its called, is a good start.
      Brown Boundary Control and Legal Principles is dense but a good read to understand surveying.

      The NCEES page has the 2 calculators allowed. I actually had to buy a new one and relearn using it for the test. I bought the Casio fx-991EX Classwiz.

    • @coolspiritministries

      Go with either the HP 33 or HP 35. There are coordinate programs available. Both calculators are approved by NCEES.

      I’ve used the Casio for the FS, I was very familiar with it. Easy to insert degrees , minutes and seconds without changing to decimal.

    Does passing the FS exam grant a Surveyor-in-Training certificate? Or is this something different?

    • @surveyusa5574
      @surveyusa5574  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is the exam you need to pass to obtain the SIT (surveyor in training), LSIT (land surveyor in training), LSI (land surveying intern), etc certificate. Different states use different acronyms but it is all the same exam.
