You can take your square plates cut the corners off to make them look like stop signs and it becomes a signature of your welding the hexagonal plate level to the deck with a d-ring weld to do it kind of cool

My car hauler has D rings welded right to the frame. No extra metal under the ring. I have not had any issues with rings pulling loose, etc. I can see your logic if I was hauling large equipment via the metal ratcheting chain binders, I'd say yes, add the extra metal. I haul smaller tractors and use straps and my D rings work just fine.
Ultimately as far as that U that attaches the actual ring is the only part that will have any strength to hold the ring. So basically the plate is only useful if your welding to thinner steel on your trailer.
I think this is a good lesson because people just don't understand why having a good weld is important.
Thanks for sharing, I'm making a pintle hitch plate for my back end on my semitruck for a unit I've been asked to yank several hundred miles.

application makes a difference, the small ones welded around perimeter and the holes works fine.
Everything you said was spot on. I will say, with a lot of millers newer machines like the maxstar 200 for example can run somewhere around that 125 amps for stick, and even 150 for tig on 120v power and than 200 amps for both on 220 and 440v. But like you said, if you have a machine like that you will be doing it right anyway, not with a cheap harbor “fright” welder. I love dual voltage machines because it limits how much I need to run a generator when doing work for people

I welded these on my trailer with a 115v lincoln 140 and towed my Harleys like 4k miles....it was 11 Guage tubing tho. And not chains...straps. but dang I am glad nothing broke I did think it was an issue
In one of your earlier videos, you used circle plates instead of square. I remember something about more equal pressure instead of pulling/stress on the corners

i know he said dont use a 110volt mig, but what about for a motorcycle trailer? one motorcycle would be strapped down.
My enclosed car hauler has a plywood floor. It does have metal plates under the floor in strategic areas and that's where I bolted my tiedowns. As a car hauler, I doubt I'll ever have more than 3500-4000 pounds in it.

hey man ive always enjoyed your sort of vloggy tractor and weldy videos but it would also be great to see your learn to weld videos i cant remember the name exactly of the series cos they were very thorough i found and ive always been able to arc weld but was trying to get into mig and would be great to learn from a familiar face who knows his stuff

Good morning brothers and sisters in the truth seeking world.
I've had good luck running a chinese 110 stick welder combo-- (it does tig and also a plasma cutter). I can also run it 220 on the same machine, but for convenience, I mostly run it 110/ stick. It's not quite hot enough to run the 1/8 rod very well-- so I get the smaller 3/32 rod and it works beautifully. This way it gets more than hot enough and has great penetration.. But I would have to disagree about using 6011 on a cheaper trailer like this/ it still works fine. It's not like you're booming down a 40ton track loader or something; especially with the extra plate, it's more than enough.

What is the structural difference between single shield Flux core and dual shield Flux core?
PLEASE Correct me if/when I am wrong, MIG is the easiest to learn, TIG is the hardest to learn and probably the best looking finished product, Stick is the Strongest finished product, and Gas is more for delicate work - Jewelers etc.... Would this be a crude assessment? I have done some Gas and MIG years ago, but that was 25+ yrs ago. Thanks Chuck I enjoy your instruction style.
Er70 (tig filler), 7018 (stick rod), ER70s (mig wire) are all the same just different processes. They are all rated at 70k tensile strength. A tig weld is just as strong as a mig weld and that’s just as strong as a stick weld. Each type of welding has its own advantages and disadvantages. Stick welding is great in the drill because you don’t need shielding gas, mig is nice because it’s fast, tig is nice because it’s a “clean” finish state as in you don’t have to brush it or clean up bb’s. All three processes should be peeped the same way tho.
For a home shop a mig welder and a stick welder are the best choices out there for ease of use. If you have the time to learn to tig then go for it. It’s just a little slower process, not much but a little slower.

Jeff, kinda depends more on what your welding. Arc welding ,( stick) is more for structural steel. Thicker pecies. If your just going to use it around the farm. Stick is the way to go. Cheaper to get set up with to. Welding flat is fairly easy with stick. You'll get the hang of it in no time. Gets much harder when you get horizontal/vertical. Even harder if your trying to weld something upside down. ( Overhead). Mig is more for sheet metal. Although, you can certainly weld very thick stuff with a mig welder. Tig I don't know much about. I did some in welding school. It was very simple. Almost exactly like welding with a Oxy/acetylene torch. Just get the edges to start flowing together. Adding filler rod as you go. I made out here in the farm with just a Lincoln 225 A/C machine for many year. Got a Mig about 10 years ago. Just for sheet metal. Wonderful for that!

I put a D-ring on a tractor implement and while the weld didn't come apart, the ring itself straightened out because it was just bent into shape, and not welded 1 piece solid... half inch rod bent into a D, 25hp tractor straightened it right out pulling fence posts out of the ground... lol, some shitty luck there...

"Not a beginner project" Lol. I had never welded anything and had never even touched a welder. But I watched TH-cam so that made me a certified idiot. I was 21, I bought the expensive model of mig welder from good ol Harbor Freight. I think I maybe practiced welding two plates together, but not sure. First project I did was weld D rings on a utility trailer. They looked like absolute shit, but here we are 10 years later and they are still holding. Like most 21 year olds, I was an idiot. But I'm 100% self taught off youtube and have become a pretty descent welder over the years. Still use the cheap ass HF welder. I'm literally the epitome of a youtube moron but hey, I own it and fuck it.
A guy should cut slots in the plate & weld them in. More real estate to the parent material

I've put lights on a trailer and regretted it, but that's only because I didn't tie up the wires properly and they shorted out. I like to think I'm less of an idiot now, but don't ask my wife.

What about bolting and Welding?
Don't... Honestly regular bolt on d rings are pretty strong, enough for many applications. If you need more than that, have a weld on d ring welded properly
My welding skills aren't the best. I'm building a 37 pickup with Mustang II front suspension. I enlisted my cousin, a professional welder, to weld that in. I am going to have him wild in some bracing that I"ve tacked in.
Just my experience.
If you are using the original 37 frame.
Preheat before welding and let it cool slow.

Those D rings are an absolutely terrible Idea! You should've used X rings instead.
Oh but you forget about the Y rings. 😆
Defiantly don't trust a d ring a trailer builder, company welds. They are all about speed.
