AVCS Low Voltage Issue. Need some ideas.

  • I'm posting this to hopefully get some ideas of what electrically could be causing my avcs issues before I take the dash back out and go over the whole harness.
    If anyone has ran into something similar I'm hoping to get some ideas of what to test.

    no suggestions here, but i can't wait to see this wagon rip. hope you get it sorted out soon.

    And if you had a Tactrix I could ask you for a log and dive in deeper. I have an 06 sti merged with an 85 rx turbo harness. No issues. But I took every plug apart and cleaned it and used the electric stuff to keep oxidation down. Also I do merges myself. I don’t send it off.

      Yeah I'm sure it's installation error is some way, something must not be getting good ground in the harness, I just can't find it. I also repaired a few things in the harness, replaced connectors cleaned and rewrapped everything.
      All the ecu plugs were new from iwire. I trust them to make a good harness. I think I'm just going to have to pull the dash and go over it again.

    Well being a tuner your not gonna like this but. Your going to need to take every pin and plug apart and check that every pin is still in the plugs and making contact. And don’t forget the ecm plugs. They get oxidized and do this. It’s 100% electrical. And it could possibly be the ecm going to failsafe mode and not using the avcs actively. But I can almost gauruntee it’s a bad ground, or bad connection in the plugs. Check it when the motor is warmed up.

      Yeah I agree, I'm hoping I missed a ground or something behind the dash, the ecu plugs are new and I've taken the solenoid connectors apart, I don't think it's a connection issue but maybe a grounding issue. It's just crazy I can't find anyone who has had something similar happen even on a swap.

      @@HackSquadGarage IV had plugs when I plugged them in unpin themselves. Just fixed this on another car but the maf sensor plug wires were broken in the casing it was extremely hard to find and it wasn’t untill I got frustrated and ripped every wire out to replace them when I found the problem.

    Or you have a bad avcs solonoid on the head but without the Tactrix ap you can’t see those values live while logging to see what’s going on. Again check the plugs on every avcs portion and check for oxidation.

    • @HackSquadGarage
      @HackSquadGarage  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I checked for oxidation and I actually even made a seperate sub harness for the solenoids and wired them in, no change.
      The solenoids are brand new oem. 2nd set. It's definitely electrical since it does advance if I apply power.

      @@HackSquadGarage do you have intake spacers? Phenolic by chance? If you do move the intake grounds to the block. The avcs ground goes to the intake but if isolated by the phenolic spacer that could be an issue.

    man this is wierd, id blame the ecu, maybe take it to a tuner and see if the avcs is disabled, you traced the wires back and they were fine, only thing I can think of Is checking for shorts but you probably already tried that

    • @HackSquadGarage
      @HackSquadGarage  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I did try that, I just can't find any shorts or anything. I have a tune with avcs disabled but I really want to get working. This is also the 2nd ecu I've tried and no change.

      @@HackSquadGarage I really don't know at this point then. It has to be something in the wiring but you already tested it so idk, did you probe the ECU for avcs signal?

    You've probably already done it, but making sure that 12 volt battery is tight tight so everything can read right? Just saying hope you're having a good night man

      Yeah I have for sure. It's also a brand new battery with brand new oem cables. Also installed an extra grounding kit. Thanks man I appreciate it!

    This is why I also don’t do Cobb. Anythjng. Get yourself a Tactrix accessport 2.0 and then you can actually see what’s going on. Cobb is shooting yourself in the foot.

    • @HackSquadGarage
      @HackSquadGarage  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I appreciate that, I'll look into it but I've seen the logs and in the logs it does the same thing, is sporadically advancing, sometimes too much most of the time not at all. My tuner thought it was a mechanical issue but we proved it's not.

      @HeidiFegles ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@HackSquadGarage especially now that Cobb got nailed by the epa don’t know what they are going to offer now.

    What does your avcs table look like? I’m getting this feeling your Cobb tune doesn’t have the avcs active and could be a tune for a fixed cam system. But without a real log there is no way. That’s why I say Tactrix and tune yourself.

    • @HackSquadGarage
      @HackSquadGarage  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      My tuner has been helping me with this and we've tried a few variations, but currently it just has a mild 15 degree solid table essentially. Stays at 15 for most of the rpm band.

      @HeidiFegles ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@HackSquadGarage mine goes to 25* advance. But look at the table and cross reference with rpm and load g/rev and and make sure your actually hitting those columns. You want. I’ll keep throwing ideas to get you thinking. As I’m shooting in the dark from my house lol.

    I know this is a stupid suggestion, but, you mention you "spliced" looms from a Forester and Legacy right? And from my experience working on my 1992 Liberty wagon here in Aus.Engine earthing and fuse box earthing are fiddly. And if youve used different ECU'S with the same codes everytime, Id suggest there's one lonely earth wire thats not connected somewhere between those two looms, thats not allowing the AVCS circuit to complete. But Im not as advanced as you dude. Is there any way to buy non AVCS cam gears and delete AVCS all together?

    • @edwardiganz2478
      @edwardiganz2478 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I say this because Ive had a sitch, where the wiring loom from the cabin into the engine bay got cut slightly when I moved the loom around while installing engine. Then the main ignition wire got cut and shorted the fuse in the fuse box. I ended up calling an auto electrician mobile guy and he helped trace the wiring diagram to find the point w0here it got nicked by the firewall. Those thick rubber gasket at the firewall that cover the wires hide lots of secrets.

    • @edwardiganz2478
      @edwardiganz2478 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Also, on my 04 Forester XT, the wiring loom under the intake, I've pinched wiring while installing manifold once or twice. And that's part of the AVCS CONTROL loom I think. So find another one of those looms maybe and swap it out in case theres some broken/burnt wiring thats not visible to naked eye.

    • @edwardiganz2478
      @edwardiganz2478 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Lastly physically scrape or grind to bare metal ALL earth point you can access on the entire loom to do with the engine and gearbox. Those points like to rust, especially in the States with salted roads. Dont know where you live though. Good luck with the hunt. Wiring shit is the worst!! But another set of trained eyes always helps. Even though I never like to admit defeat and call someone for a 2nd opinion.

      Yeah I paid iwire to make this harness and they use sti forester harnesses for 1sr gen legacy swaps because the bulk head of the harness is on the correct side. So it was professionally made.
      I've searched and searched and just can't find anything, there probably is something disconnected.
      I've cleaned and redone all the ground like you said.
      I've traced almost the entire engine harness to the ecu and found no shorts or high resistance, I figured if I just traced enough wires I'd find some evidence. Checked all the fuses, tested the relays I can access. It definitely seems like a grounding issue I just can't find where.
      I think it's time to pull the dash and go over everything, maybe there's a loose ground back there I missed.
      Definitely didn't want to make a video about this but I always show my mistakes so here we are.
      Thanks for the advice!
