Secret Creatures: Africa's earth pig, the Aardvark.

- It is several hours after sunset. Countless stars dot the wide black African sky, and in the darkness, a strange sound emanates from beneath the earth.
The scrabbling sound from underground gets louder as the loose soil is pushed aside from the entrance of the tunnel. This is the home of an aardvark or antbear. It emerges extremely cautiously, sniffing the air extensively while its long tubular ears swivel about, trying to detect any sounds of danger nearby.
Satisfied at last that it is alone, the aardvark sets off on the night's forage. It meanders about, its long pig-like snout continuously snuffling loudly along the ground. Before long, its acute sense of smell locates an ant nest. With its powerful forelimbs and strong claws, the aardvark quickly digs into the soil and sticks its snout into the resulting hole, sniffing hungrily. It licks up the ants deep in the nest with its long sticky tongue, which it can extend 30cm from its mouth.
Later in the night, the aardvark is excavating yet another tunnel. Apart from digging for food, the aardvark also excavated burrows as a temporary refuge. Heaps of soil appears from the opening as the bushveld's underground architect is hard at work. When the Aardvark is finished with these burrows, it abandons them and they become homes for most of the Secret Seven and others who are unable to dig a safe hidey-hole for themselves.
Tunnelling is also a vital defence for the aardvark itself. The burrow provides a safe refuge for it during the day, as it closes up the entrance with soil, leaving only a very small gap for ventilation.
The aardvark can also take refuge underground in a hurry if it needs to ... as we soon discover when a hopeful lion tries to sneak up on it. But the aardvark's extremely sensitive hearing warns it in plenty of time and it begins to dig so quickly that it is impossible for even a desperately hungry predator to dig it out. In moments, the aardvark has disappeared into the bowels of the earth, safely out of reach.

The name of this animal in my language is "isambane" growing up I was told that if you have an eye contact with it you, something bad will soon happen to you. So we avoided going to the forest late in the day or at night to look for the cattle if its missing. the elders were helping in preserving it.
People say aardvarks are ugly, but I strongly disagree with them.
I think they are adorable.😊
They are cute
Yeah, who thinks Arthur is ugly?
@@lucidstarx3456 have you seen the early books?

Internet at 3AM: Wanna watch a show about a weird alien pig?
The way its nose moves is just TOO CUTE!!
We must protect and save this creature
It's not endangered.
The Aardvark (Orycteropus Afer) is the only surviving species of the order Tubulidentata, despite its both myrmecophagous and mellivorous behavior, it is unrelated to other placental mammals with such similar lifestyle such as armadillos, anteaters, and pangolins, which belong to the orders Cingulata, Pilosa, and Pholidota respectively, in fact aardvarks are more closely related to hyraxes, elephants, and sirenians than to any of these animals.
thanks you, that's what was need in the video, background info like that about it, with the extra sprinkle on top of why it may have evolve like it did.
@@death369reaper Be careful of his other comments. He's been known for making false classifications.
That doesn’t look like Arthur..
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! I absolutely love aardvarks. It's smart not to destroy the complete insect nests. The colonies recover quickly. So the aardvark has food nearly forever.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all involved life forms (humans, animals and plants).
This thing looking like a whole rat, bunny, kangaroo, pig typa thing...
Well it has a pig nose, bunny ears, and a kangaroo tail.
His pretty cute
박상진 nice one
Also to mention
Aardvarks are Called earth pigs, have rabbit ears and kangaroo tail and long claws, but actualy it's closest relative is actualy a elephant, look at the nose it looks like a trunk even if nose looks like pig nose
The eco system is it's own marvel universe. I love the way every species on earth has it's own abilities and gifts based on their genetic and evolutionary disposition
Mmmmm yea! I believe the big bang theory. God said BANG!!!!!!!...and there it all was!
I like the marvel universe. My favorite hero is iron man. I wonder if an aardvark would eat ant man? Also why is there no aardvark man. jamal leblanc please anser
This was very informative, thanks

Well that's a strange one considering I'm pretty sure that there's only one adult male lion as well as 1 male cub in a whole Pride
@@williampulfer-melville8536 no, you need to look that up. a pride does have a couple male members.
The lion 🦁 like a big cat 🐱 and the aardvark is like a big mouse 🐭
The difference being is that a lion is an actual cat whereas an aardvark isn't really a mouse
Hey, it's Arthur from the tv show
Arthur the Aardvark
omg its a giant armadillo with no shell!
I’m just here cause I just found out that Arthur was an aardvark..
Brandon Costin At first I thought he was a guinea pig
I thought he was a mouse
Brandon Costin
Me too! XD
But I’m also here to learn
So, aardvarks need to go under holes to defend themselves from predators?
Rare Pokemon
We learn from animals many things
@@Thworped Lmao
Aardvarks sometimes eat aardvark cucumber, but aardvarks mostly feed on ants and termites, etc.
I caught one on my farm in Somaliland today.
I want him
How is the camera guy this close without scaring the aardvark away?
The camera guy was john cena.
It’s the camera man he has powers
where’s his glasses and yellow shirt
Surely I’m not the only one here who wouldn’t have heard of Aardvarks as a child in the 90s if it wasn’t for Otis on CBBC.
Hey I found Arthur lol.
Natasha!!
Plenty of them found on the farm close to Prince Albert, Western Cape.
It wont help the lion to try and dig the aardvark out, most of the time they've got allot of tunnels linked up and different exits. They love to stay in family groups underground.
But aren't they easy prey otherwise? Soft defenseless bodies
the dictionary brought me here\
So cute and odd at the same time 😂❤️
Such unusual animals
how does a cam get this close
wtf is an earth pig? Are there sky pigs I'm unaware of?
just to point out the absurdity of translation, an aardvark in french is called "tamanoir"
did I hear this correctly?? This creature can run faster than a man? I don't believe it until I see it! :D
That’s what he said bro
Aardvark pays off.
Sir this is wendys?
Hiii adminn, saya meminta izin untuk mendownload video yang di tayangkan oleh admin 🙏
What is it
Aww how cute 😍
Arthur is cool and all being a 90s baby, but to all my Afrakan kemetic family out there this is an apparent element of the deity set, the one whom all religions got the idea for the said devil or Satan from. the worst thing we're taught in school ans history is that these are gods, when these are all but principles that reside within us all.
Hotep to all
I'm here for Arthur. Anyone else here for Arthur?
Ermmmm.. Africa? Where exactly? It's a big fat continent you know!!
They live in sub-Saharan Africa.
filmed at Thornybrook Game Reserve, see credits and all over Africa, wherever termites live.
Literally the whole continent except the western part. So about 75-80% of the continent
@@DavidVasquez-lb9xv there are aardvarks in west africa
BEk 7 interesting! Had no idea! Ty
Aardvarks sleep during the day and feed during the night.
03:37 what is that black and white animal?
that tongue tho
I just wanna touch its nose
Orycteropus afer is it's scientific name of the aardvark.
they are closer to Elephants than to Pigs.. I'm going to go on a tangent here just to show how interesting the animal trees can get, You've heard about elephant relatives and how different in appearance they can be.. ie hyrax, elephant shrew, dugong
the closest relative of the pig ARE ???? I would just say other artiodactyla like deer, cows, sheep, goats, giraffe (giraffes closest is the Okapi) [ Not the aardvark! ] this is kinda new: Scientists thought hippos were closest to pigs but it turns out hippos are closer to whales! artiodacyla in general are closest to whales ! there was an ancient animal in artiodactyla that swam and had an organ that only whales have - auditory bulla (can hear underwater sounds) named Indohyus, believe it or not! The animal kingdom tree can get pretty fascinating
Some predators have sharp claws
Some have eagle sight
Some have poison and venom
And then him....he sniff snoofs
There are three aardvarks in Estarcion.
1:20 is cute
Isn't that what arthur is
They have teeth because they are coevolved with a cucumber that fruits underground
It reminds a story of "Pretty Woman" 1990
Set the God of Disorder and Storms.
Aardvark ears like rabbit and claws like sloth.
Asyraf Naqiuddin with a pig snout

Hi

Aardvark means earth pig.
Rabbit-Pig
Aardvarks! Right? That's why your here,
I however am here to find out how they taste.
Earthy/Bacony
Well, I can't say I'm surprised that someone on the internet is talking trash about aardvarks. People always feel so bold and empowered to say whatever the hell they want online, even if it's hurtful or disrespectful. But let me tell you something: aardvarks are cool as hell, and if you can't see that, then you're just a lame, narrow-minded individual who probably wouldn't know a good time if it hit you in the face. Aardvarks are fascinating creatures with unique physical features, interesting behavior patterns, and a crucial role in their ecosystem. So if you're gonna hate on aardvarks, you might as well hate on all the other amazing creatures in the world too. And honestly, who needs that kind of negativity in their life? It's time to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom, and leave the petty insults behind.
Seth actualy look cute lmao
Seth newman? at covenant college?
Before i searched on you tube what Aardvark is..i tought it was a villain on avengers movie. Lol
You watch too much movies.
